Yeah that was a pretty emotional line, "You're no hero! THIS is MY hero!" It's ironic because two years after the video game crash of 1983, a hero DID rise from the ashes and saved the video game market, but instead of it being R.O.B. like Nintendo had originally intended, it turned out to be Mario. That's what the nerd was getting at when he was reaching for Mario while saying "Nintendo made video games awesome again for the most part, but I don't think their success had anything to do with you!" It's sort of like when Walt Disney had originally intended for Oswald The Lucky Rabbit to become the face of his animation company. He did eventually get a face, but instead of Oswald, it turned out to be Mickey Mouse. Mario is to Nintendo what Mickey Mouse is to Walt Disney Pictures in almost every way.

That's why you loaded cartidges like you load tapes in a VCR, and why the console sometimes came bundled with the robot: to resemble a toy more than a console.

On another AVGN binge, and this is always a favorite. The irony is that R.O.B. did actually play a big part in the NES being successful at least in the west, but not because it was actually any good. I actually still have my R.O.B. It's scary to think that without that janky robot toy, video games might not have taken off or been as successful in the 80's as they were.

I feel R.O.B redeemed himself by being a playable character in Smash Bros

Kind of amazing to look back on all the add-ons from the NES era -- ROB, the power glove, the power pad, all of the goofy controllers. Subsequent generations of consoles didn't have nearly as much of that. Granted, most of those add-ons were terrible, and rapidly abandoned, but at least Nintendo and others were trying to be *really* innovative back in those days...

Honestly there are so many 80s projects that were made recently that James would’ve been perfect for. But ya know he’s a independent filmmaker with only one movie based on his character released in theaters to his name.

The ending is beautiful enough to make a grown man cry. Absolute masterpiece, as always in the timeless AVGN saga, truly an outstanding episode, definitely up there with some of the best ones, if not maybe even the best one, no wonder why it's James's favourite! Lul

The Le9end. He's been around a long time and he definitely was the original KZreadr. He was such a success that he was featured on G4, Spike TV and Screw Attack. He was an innovator when it came to acting and scripting game reviews on KZread. He influenced many and caused many to start spin offs of this series. Basically it's genius how he wrote this series. A nerd that spent his youth and childhood playing games that he never could beat. As an adult he is bitter and has become an alcoholic that still tries to beat those same games. He did all of this before game reviews and gameplay videos were cool on KZread.

DANGIT! I bought this game at a retro shop recently. I swear I recall my friend playing this by himself without ROB when it was new. I bought it but haven't plugged it in yet. How frustrating. That music is rad, I want it as a ring tone. I could listen to it all day. Skpping down the hallways at work with that tune playing outloud, patting people on the shoulder as I pass them. Asking them if they want a raddish...

As good as this episode is, not gonna lie, seeing two NES controllers get butchered made me die a little inside.

The best thing about R.O.B. is him being in Mario Kart DS and Super Smash Bros.

I think the plot for this episode would have been great for the AVGN movie. I mean, Nintendo would never lend the rights for ROB to be used for something like this, but imagine making this into a fully realized movie. The plot is perfect, the premise is fun, it has a historic basis and you get a final showdown in a giant monster movie style, exactly what James loves. Think about it.

5:28 is still one of my favorite Nerd moments.

I literally lost it when the nerd did an imitation of R.O.B

If the R.O.B. had even been half as powerful as it was in this episode, I would've most likely forgiven it for trying to kill me. The real thing was so useless that we ended up strapping fireworks to it and murdering it in a firepit.
