Rōnin talks over revisiting fundamentals (Combat Pistol)

Please join in on our Rōnin “Combat Pistol” Course hosted by Whistling Pines Gun Club in Colorado Springs, CO. In this video, I talk over the importance of revisiting fundamentals to enhance speed and accuracy. Understand how I gathered data from my time in combat and translated it to develop combat fundamentals during my training. Join me as I discuss the relationship between the size of target, distance, shooters ability and how this affected my processing of information on the battlefield. In this video, I talk over how to properly adapt fundamentals to combat pistol. See how I trained for conflicts and how I’ve prepared and train the mind to process through these complex situations.

I have been shooting since I was 10 (61 now), spent 6 years in NAVSPECWAR, shot competitively in USPSA/IPSC for over 20 years and have been a certified handgun instructor for over 3 decades...I say all of this only so that you understand the level of my appreciation for what and how Ronin presents with his instruction. He presents these concepts that are sound bio mechanically, and he incorporates the physics of the firearm AND realities based on ones individual physiology/psychology. Additionally he speaks to fine tuning skills based on real world feedback. In watching a number of Ronin’s instructional sessions, he doesn’t add “fluff” or some slant on a technique that ads to his self aggrandizement, instead he instructs without any unnecessary tangents that take away from the purpose of the discussion. There is an old statement out there that many of us have heard repeated hundreds of times in our lives...PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. I am here to tell you that is WRONG! Practicing something wrong doesn’t make you skilled at anything other than being mediocre. PERFECT practice makes perfect! The only way to perfect a technique is to be properly instructed on the hows and whys of the technique so that you truly understand the mechanics and the intended PURPOSE of the technique. This allows you to understand and decipher/trouble shoot the feedback (holes on cardboard, time on shot timer, etc) in order for you to refine your technique to a higher level that is suited to your individual combination of body type, strength, grip angle, recoil characteristics and other variables that YOU as an individual contend with. In order to best utilize any instruction, you need to practice it until it becomes a subconscious reaction in your mind/body rather than something you must think about with every press of the trigger. How do you do this as an individual at home alone? This is where self discipline and concentration come in. Take 10-20 minutes a day and practice, building on a single fundamental to perfection before moving on to the next concept. Then as you build, you spot check your previous fundamentals to insure that you’ve not slipped into an incorrect or sloppy technique. If you don’t have a skilled, committed partner there to watch you, then take that phone out and video yourself from different angles, focusing in on the areas of your body that incorporate the fundamental that you are working to perfect. Be your own coach and DO NOT ACCEPT ANYTHING LESS THAN PERFECTION. Start a new technique with slow (VERY SLOW) PERFECT movements and then proceed to quarter speed, 1/2 speed, 3/4 speed and full speed, BUT, the moment you go from one speed to the next and you compromise perfection, stop! Now, take a step back, slow down, until your next jump is ALWAYS perfect. Eventually you will get to a point where your mind and body perform to a level of perfection without thought. If a real world “hiccup” occurs during your movement (rain/blood, mud, cold, sweat, or whatever messes up your draw, grip or whatever) and this unforeseen variable tries to derail your perfection, you will want to practice correcting on the fly and getting back into the fight. In the real world, there are no ‘time outs’ or ‘do overs’. Anticipating for the unexpected or even unimaginable allows your mind to react without becoming flustered or your actions derailed. There are many ways to introduce hiccups. Putting a dummy round into your mag so that your gun goes click instead of bang when you aren’t expecting it is an excellent training tool (your shooting partner does this for you without you watching for example). This shows you several things for example. If your gun goes click instead of bang and your barrel moves when it does, it shows you that your gun is not stationary at the moment you are pulling the trigger and that will help you control your shot group size. When it goes click, it teaches you to instantly recognize a malfunction or empty magazine and, without thinking, go immediately into analysis and actions to get yourself back into the fight, without instant panic in your mind. Another idea is for putting a little dirt, mud or wet stuff on your grip while you have your gun holstered for example. When you go to draw, the grip will feel different so you adapt, and correct on the fly. Try smearing some toothpaste on your shooting glasses to simulate obstructed vision from blood in your eyes. There are lots of ways to introduce variables but it ALWAYS goes back to the perfect fundamental skill set that you perform at your peak level and THAT is what Ronin offers in one of the most detailed and intelligent ways that I’ve seen over my 50 years of shooting. 2021 will NOT magically turn into a stellar year for our country or the world. Bad things will still happen, the polarization in our society will still exist and honestly it will probably only continue to get worse. I am an advocate of preparation for any eventuality and part of that is preparing to defend my family, friends, innocents and myself from violence. Learning the fundamentals of the mechanics of shooting is something that I strongly encourage everyone to do and then I pray that none of us are ever faced with a situation where we have to employ these skills to save lives. Self defense is only one aspect of preparing for life’s potential challenges and I am not proposing that everyone be paranoid or worried about what we as a nation or as individuals may face. Instead, I am saying to look clearly and dispassionately at future possibilities and do your best to think through solutions that will work for you and your loved ones. Our motto many, many, many (lol) years ago in Boy Scouts, was BE PREPARED. If you’ve prepared yourself, do not fear. No matter how bad things may appear, NEVER give in, NEVER give up. The Lord works in ways that we often cannot comprehend at the time, but in retrospect, we see His hand in events. Trust in Him and prepare yourself and things will work out. I hope and pray that each of you have a happy, safe and blessed 2021. 😉🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 Well done Ronin.

learnt so much in such a relatively short time. Any man with 20 plus years experience that still to this day tapes his fingers as he's running drills that often is in my eyes probably as lethal and effective as a man can be. Clear concise and to the point, demands respect but makes you feel stronger. incredible content, subbed!

Haha, bro that smile on your face as your descending down from jumping off the plane! Says to me you love what you do, and as an old wise man once told me, "Son if you love what you do, you will never work a hard day in your life." Tu, you are living the dream brother, keep on keeping on.

Thank you for your strength of Character and Patriotism. This explanation or concept of grip is the epitome of how a true Master would teach his students. Maximum results with minimum effort is what my Grand Master says. This has been very helpful to explain the body mechanics. It is a concrete foundation for me to build from. I can tell when I get it right, just need to practice, thanks.

This dude would whip the Rocks ass in less than 30 seconds. Rock is cool but you can see clearly whose on the juice and whose not. Rock is all about entertainment while this man is a straight killer.
