In this video you will see my journey to shri neelkanth mahadev temple situated in Kalinjar Fort Uttar Pradesh , Neelakanth Temple is a famous millennia old Lord Shiva temple housing ‘ekmukhi Shivalinga’ and various other ancient rock carvings in its campus.
Neelkantha Temple main attraction is a large bluestone Shivalingam with silver eyes, which has been a primary object of worship for over a millennium. As per the mythology Lord Shiva came to Kalinjar to quench his thirst after consuming poison after the Samudra Manthan. Even today throat of the shiva lingam is always moist with water source inside the temple.
This ancient temple of Lord Shiva built over 1000 years ago and is one the ancient temples in India. You need to climb down around steep 165 steps from the fort walls to reach the temple area. On the way to temple stairways, many small caves and rocks carvings can be seen.
A Multi-pillared Mandapa is situated on the entrance of this Shiva Temple. Mandapa pavilion is a unique work of Chandela architecture who ruled this fort around 9th -12th CE.
On top of the temple, there is a natural rock cut reservoir of water called Swargarohan Kund, numerous other rock carvings are visible all around the temple premises.
A colossal Mahasadashiva rock cut carving is situated on the left side of the temple. This 24 feet tall impressive figure depicts lord shiva with 18 arms and a skull in his hand. Statue of Kali is also present within the same carving.
