I will never forget the first time I heard R L Burnside. I went to our local Fred Meyers store to drop off some shoes for repair. I heard this blues singer on the radio, and a young man of about twenty working there told me, "That's R L Burnside. I can't believe you've never heard of him. He's a famous blues singer." This was about ten years ago, and I never forgot him. That is pure, raw, beautiful talent!!!
The Black Keys turned me on to Junior Kimbrough, Kimbrough turned me on to Burnside, I now listen to a whole lot of Burnside.

If you know his story, we are lucky we heard that shout at all. He was a sharecropper in a house with a dirt floor and couldn't afford a guitar for a while. Recorded his first songs on a borrowed guitar when he was "discovered" by a musicologist in 1977.
Heaviest metal blues. so blue, it's psychedelic !
Northern Mississippi Hill Country Blues has a different vibe on it's own like the Delta. More of a hypnotic trance rhythm.
we all love Mr Burnside
I’ve heard this song before. I’ve never heard it played this good. Remarkable heavy blues musician with a signature sound.

It's quite the journey. Junior Kimbrough and Fat Possum. Spend some time digging through the Alan Lomax Archives. Somewhere along the way you'll bump into JJ Cale and then you'll be pleased to learn about artists like Paul Benjamin and Jontavious Willis who are just knocking it out of the park and you can go see live TODAY (2022)! I was lucky enough to see RL 'live' in a small club in Glasgow, Scotland in 1999, incredible talent with brilliant backing from Cedric and Kenny. No earthly reason why RL shouldn't be mentioned alongside John Lee Hooker, et al as one of the blues greats.
Oh man, this has a groove. RIP Mr. Burnside.
Junior Kimbrough was my introduction to the Hill Country Blues, but R.L. made me fall in love with it.
The drummer fucking rules!
Mr RL Burnside is being shown on u tube in takes at his home back yard. Pure genius and talent unbridled. A true music maker. A true sense of his poor upbringing I presume in the deep south of America. His love of blues and his talent is a joy to listen to. A real gentlemen.
RL should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Real Performer . That’s called a riff .Like shelling peas for the great man .
I love this redition of rollin and tumblin, and I love north hill country blues. I've noticed in all my favourite music, my most favourite is all very repetitive, more like rhythms than melodies. Maybe it's the cave man in me, but it's beautifully simple and simply beautiful.

The drummer is so cool - they don't need a bass player! R L's grandson I hear.
This is bad ass.
Speechless...
The blues is the best genre no fancy shredddy stuff, just simple rythmn and soul
It's kind of sad thinking about how much respect this guy had in Europe while he was generally unknown throughout his career in his home country, along with the other Hill Country Blues guys. It would have been awesome to see this...three legit Hill Country musicians. I think they're even neighbors!
