R.I.P. Hollywood Western Stars Who DIED Too Soon! THE UNLUCKY 13! All True! More Western Stars! AWOW
Ойын-сауық
Award winning documentary THE UNLUCKY 13. This episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS, has received 2023 Spur Finalist Honors for Best Documentary Script by the Western Writers of America (WWA) and the Will Rogers Silver Medallion Award for Western Film Documentary. It is very humbling and gratifying to know that our bringing recognition to these performers has been embraced by such highly respected organizations as the WWA and the Will Rogers Medallion Awards. It is, indeed, an honor.
HOLLYWOOD WESTERN STARS WHO DIED TOO SOON was a special hour-long A WORD ON WESTERNS episode honoring 12 artists and filmmakers who made westerns and whose careers were cut short. The response from our regular viewers and film fans around the world has been phenomenal, so I decided to put together a sequel and ended up with an even longer special episode honoring 13 more of those performers who have given us so much entertainment in westerns and other genres, too. Here then is THE UNLUCKY 13 WESTERN STARS WHO DIED TOO SOON.
You may be surprised at some of the people who died at such a young age. I know I was. With their on-screen work, this diverse group of actors has left an indelible impression on me and their audiences. When we are young, we see them on screen, and they stay with us forever. If we are lucky, they continue to entertain us as we grow older, and they transition from youthful performers to character roles. No matter how long their careers last, it’s always sad when they pass.
When they die too young, it’s a tragedy. A loss for their family, friends and for us, co-workers, viewers, and fans.
I’ve been thinking about those who contributed to the western genre who died and couldn’t continue, those who died early in their life, cutting their careers short. Once again, I picked 50 years old as the cut-off age. Most in our tribute died younger. I wish they had all lived longer to give us years more of their work to enjoy. May they all Rest in Peace.
I still enjoy seeing them on film and in repeats. I hope you do, too.

I liked Richard Long. When he was a child, he suffered pneumonia that weakened his heart, his drinking and smoking did not help either. I liked him in "The Big Valley" and other Tv shows Like the Twilight Zone episode "Number 12 looks just like you" and movies that he did. Plus, Tyrone Power I liked too. He died of the same thing Stephen Boyd died of a heart strombolisms-where the heart doesn't get enough oxygen. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you for mentioning Eric Fleming. He was THE trail boss of Rawhide! What an actor! So convincing in that portrayal. I will miss him always.

Me too. It brings home on how unfair life is.
Jeff Chandler was an actor who brought great dignity to every role he played, and even in those movies where the budget might not have been great, his presence alone brought something special that might otherwise not have been there.
My favourite Actors John Wayne Audie Murphy and Eric Fleming were the best I've been still watching. Gone but never forgotten. Dementia won't stop me from remembering my favourites.
I remember Lawman. Audie Murphy. And a lot of Western's from 1957. I still love Western's. And I've kept up with a lot of actors.

Jeff Chandler was someone who just exploded in my memories watching this. I always admired his stoic characters even as an Indian. He gave respect to every character he portrayed. It's a shame he died at the hands of doctors. He would've become a huge Star in the 1960s. He had the perfect leading actor looks and that voice! May they all Rest In Peace!
Clint Walker was my favorite wester actor! Just read he died in 2018, sad
Sad Sunday, but Glad Reminiscing of the greatest entertainers ever, from the Era of Good Guys & Gals Win. 👍👍& 5⭐ Joan Hackett was the number one heart-throb of mine for ever. The day she passed was very sad indeed.

Thanks, I learned about a few actors I wasn't aware of before. The Big Valley was my favorite western when I was a kid in the 60's. It still remains one of my favorites.
Very well done.Thanks.
I went to movies often & remember all of those actors & how talented they were, Joan Hackett's personality was so strong it jumped off the screen, they all had outstanding charisma. Jeff Chandler, Alan Ladd & Jeffery Hunter were extremely handsome!!!!!
Gail Russell was THE most beautiful (and talented) actress I have ever seen-her fragility and shyness always came through in her characters…. It is such a pity that the link between addiction & depression wasn’t understood at the time, and treatment wasn’t available - they were simply regarded as “weak people,” and looked down upon (which of course, only worsened their shame, addiction and isolation)….Heartbreaking.
Rob, thank you for your dedication to preserve the memories of Hollywood Westerns Stars. The future generation should be grateful. This superb narration is very well done. 💯

In 1965 Brandon De Wilde appeared in Otto Preminger's WWII drama "In Harms Way", playing the executive officer of a PT boat who is also the estranged son of the main character, Admiral Rock Torrey (played by John Wayne). It's a very dark film that removes any glamor from war, but there is a personal side story to it that I'd like to share. Decades after the movie was released I was visiting my best friend and he started talking about his younger brother who had been killed in a crop duster crash years before. He mentioned his brother had been in the military at the time the movie was being filmed and present in the crowd of onlookers that were watching as they shot the scene where the Duke is hailed aboard his son's PT. Either the Duke or the director was unhappy with the way the scene was being played because the actor hired to welcome Wayne aboard was unable to render a proper snappy salute. They noticed my friend's brother was an enlisted man and asked him if he could play the scene. He agreed and as a result he appeared in the final cut of the movie. After hearing this story, I found a copy of that very scene on KZread and emailed it to my friend so he could always remember his brother as being eternally young and free-spirited.

Tremendous presentation. No one should miss this.
This was an excellent compilation of some of the best actors and actresses of the western era. The story of Gail Russell is so so sad. Her performances with John Wayne were great and they had a sweet on camera performance. To think that their in camera performance was carried over to an off screen romance is not hard to believe. You can see it . I believe it to be true. She died too young and it is sad that.she could not overcome her Alcoholism. John Wayne kept trying to help her with that. but he couldn’t. Such a sad story .

Another tragic star you could add to the list is Jeffrey Hunter, age 42 at the time of his death. I enjoyed his performance in "The Searchers". It's sad to think so many of these fine actors succumbed to alcohol. Corn whiskey, corn whiskey I like you pretty well, You've killed all my kin folk and sent them to Hell, You've sent all my kin folk on rotgut and rye, And I guess you'll send me when I'm ready to die. (The Limeliters, 1962)
