r/Entitledparents Karen Called the Cops Because I Saved her Daughter's Life!

r/Entitledparents In today's episode, OP works at an ice cream parlor where scoops ice cream. One little girl asks for bubblegum flavor ice cream. OP warns her Karen mother that their bubblegum ice cream has real chunks of bubblegum in them, so its a choking hazard for young children. The Karen ignores OP's advice, which of course leads to the little girl almost choking to death. OP saves her with the Heimlich, and Karen calls the cops on him! WTF lady?

I had to call 911 when my dad was choking. He'd gone off to eat in another room in a huff about something dumb, and the rest of us were at our table talking. I suddenly heard odd gurgle noises for a moment and directed people to it, and someone got up to check, only to find him choking. I ran to the phone immediately as others panicked at first. Thankfully my brother successfully administered the Heimlich maneuver, but it was a terrifying few minutes. Takeaway? Yeah, anyone can choke. Also, don't go sit in a room alone to eat. I have lasting trauma and get super anxious when I know someone is eating with no one else around.

I can understand her not wanting the dog there. I refuse to pet-sit my sister's dog because he is badly trained, very vocal, sheds, has no concept of human food not being his, and is VERY needy and clingy. Having said that, my sister only asks me to pet-sit if she's going on holiday or to an overnight event, or something similar. That's something social she's choosing to do, so I consider it not my problem - therefore he can stay in a kennel at my sister's expense. If it were an emergency situation, like OP's, of COURSE I'd take him in.

As a pet owner with a dog breed that sheds heavily, I can honestly tell you dog hair ends up everywhere. I can literally be dusting a mirror above my head and think, "how did dog hair end up here"? The OP's proclamation that he/she cleans up after the dog is exaggerated at best. Sure you can sweep and mop the floors, but unless you are going to do a full house spring cleaning you are not going to clean the house of dog hair. There is going to be dog hair in every crevasse of the furniture, in the blinds, on your clothes, and even in your heating vents so it gets spread throughout the house. Now with that said, could the Mother let the OP stay and put the dog in a isolated room in the house? Probably. But unless the OP was staying in that room too, the dog will go into distress and whine and scratch at the door. Hell, my current dog once destroyed three interior doors just to get in rooms. You can say the solution would have been for the OP and the dog to stay at a pet friendly hotel. Well, the OP didn't have the money and it sounds like the OP's mom didn't have it either. I'm not saying what the Mom did is right, but at the same time I suspect Mom also didn't want the OP getting a dog knowing fully well that at some point she would be asked to take care of it. Having pets is a big responsibility and people who live alone don't understand that it becomes a huge problem caring for them when things go south. And then people do like the OP did and guilt trip the hell out of friends and family to deal with their problem. The OP talks about being out of work, but also mentions living in a home without central heating. And yet you bring a dog into this environment knowing fully well winters can become harsh. That is entitlement.

I personally think that she should have someone with her while spending time with the kids. Even with the Dad just outside didn't stop her from putting them at risk. Glad the bubblegum was removed. As an FYI from an EMT-CC, you shouldn't do blind finger sweeps to remove an object as you can push the obstruction further down into the trachea (windpipe). Rescue personnel have devices that both enable them to visualize the obstruction and forceps to remove it if possible. If it is wedged in there then they would have to perform a trachaeotomy (cutting into the trachea and inserting a tube for the patient to breathe).

I remember the advice about blind finger swipes bring bad, I'm guessing that wasn't what happened (emphasis on guessing) since the story was in OP's point of view and she probably didn't include The guy looking in the girl's throat because it didn't seem important. That said, yes definitely don't do it blind since you could lodge the food even further down and make the situation worse.

Yes this is true...if EMS is only moments away, as in less than 2 minutes. But if you live somewhere that you know it's going to take time and you've tried everything else you could. Then doing a sweep is all you have left. (I recall being taught in a CPR class to look before trying to do attempting though) Because at that rate and point in time you either try something or she will for sure die. I think the manager weighed the options here.

That first story reminded me about a truth about pizza delivery drivers. I delivered for a couple years when I was younger for a major chain. Let's call it Daddy Jack's. Many times we had 2-3 deliveries going to roughly the same area, so we took doubles and triples if the drive time wouldn't be too far in between. If a customer is a chronic stiffer (non-tipper) or poor tipper, their pizza always got delivered last, even if they were technically first on the route. Not gonna value my time and resources to make your meal more convenient? Enjoy your not-so-hot-anymore pizza.

As a customer and pizza lover, I totally approve of this!! Want preferred treatment? PAY FOR IT! It’s not rocket science Karen! My parents taught me from a very young age that the kinder you are to people, the kinder they’ll be to you and that’s how people who respect one another. Side note, I find it seriously obnoxious how the posters always feel the need to humble brag about how good a tipper they are. It makes me think their true motive for posting is to virtue signal how wonderful of a person they are. Like seriously… retail/service employees aren’t constantly handing out free rewards just because you behaved with common decency…. That’s like literally the baseline expected from a member of society. I’m sure it happens occasionally in much more serious situations, but wouldn’t a genuinely good person refuse the offer of something free on the basis that their generosity or gratitude was heartfelt and not something they think they earned a reward for? It’s likely the employee is going to have to PAY for the FREE item so they aren’t fired. Want to virtue signal? Great… but don’t accept a free something because they are likely going to have to balance their till at the end of their shift. Ooops sorry bout the rant.. lol I worked in retail long ago, still scarred 😂. Back to topic… thanks for making/delivering yummy for my tummy pizza! I wouldn’t have lived through college without it. Back then you guys were the only food delivery available.

Dogs actually love confined spaces at night. It is an ingrained security instinct. It is also why they circle around, before laying down. For instance, if I can’t sleep, or get sick, I will bed down on the couch. I have put down a used comforter by me for my GSD. He will be snoring next to me. Then I might start to drift off, then there is this huge (he is extra large) GSD in my face. If I put him in his kennel he will relax and go back to snoring. If he has a genuine need, he will drag his paw on the cage to let me know he has to go do his business outside. He loves to run and play outside in his very large yard. If he ever gets out of water or food, he will let me know by dragging the dish or knocking it over. He isn’t subtle about it.

Story 2 - TL;DR: Forcing my husband to repeatedly practice resuscitation skills on our infant daughter later saved her life when she was 3. MY PSA: Without O², the human brain begins to suffer irreversible damage>death after approx 5 min. Unlike the (Adult/Older Child) Heimlich maneuver, current (2022) EFA for a choking infant/toddler involves rapid, precise, gravity-assisted chest-compressions, back-blows and finger/mouth sweeps, all while holding the child and repeatedly flipping them over/upsidedown to clear the airway. Without hands-on practice (to increase confidence, comfort, and develop muscle memory) this can be very difficult to perform effectively, especially in a life & death situation. Stay Safe!

When I was about 3 years old I choked on a safety lollipop... they're supposedly designed so that the candy part won't come off of the looped stick but it sure as heck did. My poor mother about had a heart attack doing the Heimlich Maneuver on me - she didn't want to do it too hard because she was worried about cracking or breaking my ribs, but every time she managed to dislodge it enough that I could breathe, I would instinctually take a big gasp of air & it would get lodged right back in place. Eventually her brain decided "screw it, broken ribs heal, dead kids don't" & went whole hog, managed to get it out. I also covered a fair portion of our kitchen floor in vomit after it came out & my mother promptly had a panic attack in the aftermath. So yeah, can confirm, 3 year olds can get surprise got by large candies.

The ice cream story... not just is it a developmental thing in general, but when you throw in there different textures/types of foods mixed together, thats potentially a completely different skill a child may need to learn to navigate. In this particular story, we are talking a young child who Im assuming is generally used to being given foods that she can just chew and swallow normally, candy and things of that sort that can be sucked on, and maybe gum, all at separate times. Now she is being introduced to something that can be eaten normally mixed with something that typically cant be chewed/swallowed notmally. It sounds like the ice cream may have had relatively large pieces of gum in it, so obviously in general something that isnt just kinda easily maybe gagged down or coughed up if you get a piece caught in your throat or something.

I'm CPR certified. It was cool that the manager dislodged that bubblegum with her finger, but she should never ever do that again. When you try to dislodge food like that, you risk pushing it further in.

This is the only ending I can live with for the ice cream story: This is a pattern, since the dad said “you always do this.” This is his breaking point, because he said “you’ve gone too far.” He divorces her and gets full custody. Courts are hesitant to give full custody to a man, because sexism. Dad and attorney hold up the video of the mom insisting her daughter eats a choking hazard. Warnings do nothing. She tries to stop the person saving her kid’s life. Police report (and maybe 911 call?) show her calling the cops to arrest the life-saver while her kid chokes to death. All three kids live Happily Ever After with their dad while the mom pays lots of child support.

Just for the record, the part of swallowing where you push food back is pretty much voluntary, the part where you "gulp it down" is NOT, at least, not entirely. When something gets to the back of your throat, and it stimulates the nerves, you _will_ swallow it. I imagine that's what happened with the little girl in the second story, she was eating the ice cream, and a piece of bubble gum got pushed back into her throat with some of the ice cream she was swallowing, and got stuck when she swallowed it automatically. I have no proper words for the mother in that story, and it sounds like this isn't the first (but apparently the WORST) time she did something horrifically negligent to the kids, according to the Dad. Considering he cares about the kids a lot more, and was understandably enraged at his wife for this, I imagine he and the EM got together, for love, infatuation, or whatever reason, and this kind of behavior starting being noticeable only _after_ she and he had kids. Seems like the woman is so self-centered she lacks any maternal instinct, or is just an outright sociopath or narcissist, or she's so stupid she _can't_ grasp how serious this all was until way after it had happened (her "My daughter knows how to eat" comment even while she's visibly blue makes me consider the last one. People choke on things, even adults, it's a hazard of eating and breathing out of the same opening and with tubes right next to each other). My advice to the father would be to divorce her, keep the kids, and deny all rights to her, this is the kind of line that should _NOT_ be crossed, and if it is, to _NEVER_ give a chance after the fact.

That second story really sucks. What if nobody had noticed and the child ended up dying? That ‘mother’ blatantly endangered her child by neglecting to listen to the very real warning OP gave. Hope a divorce occurs and dad gets full custody

And I myself had an instance when I was 3 where I had swallowed a penny. It got stuck at an angle so everytime I took a breath it would turn and cut off air. Fun times yo

I was going to say you posted the gum thing before, but then you acknowledged it lol. As someone whose done a first aid course, the stories actually more believable to me. One of the first things you do in a situation is check the patients conscious/reassure them, then call for someone to call an ambulance. (Literally, before you even do CPR/heimlich, we were told to yell at someone to call the ambulance, your expertise will not surpass that of a professional, your job is to help keep the patient alive until the professionals get there) What OP didn't know but thankfully her manager did (If I remember correctly, she used to be a nurse???), what you want to do with choking/drowning, is get whats in their mouth, out. With drowning this usually means putting them in the safety position (On their side with one leg bent), tilting their head and opening their mouth to help water drain. With choking, it does 100% mean sticking your fingers in there *if* necessary, though of course not like, randomly. The risk of pushing it deeper is real and very dangerous.

I can 100% confirm something like the ice cream story is possible, my nephew was probably 10 months old at the time and his mom (my sister) gave him a tiny baby oat meal cookie for babies and he started choaking. My sister went crying, screaming and just useless at the scene so I just jamed my fingers on my nephews throat and grabbed the cookie which was all mushy and disolving at this point.

R/slash, I've got an almost 3 year old and I KNOW not to give my daughter bubblegum, nuts, or basically anything that's remotely a checking hazard. You're right. They do choke easily at this age range and this mother was 100% neglectful. I'm glad at the end she realized how badly she royally screwed up. I hope her daughter made it through with no permanent brain damage due to extended lack of oxygen.

No, that wasnt OPs job. It was her job to warn the mother so she can make a responsible decision, and thats what OP did. I dont think it would be appropiate for her to say "No, no, no, I know better than the mother what this girl can and cant eat". That EM is just a terrible parent and its totally her fault.

When I was around 4-5 years old I had a round piece of candy called "tutti frutti kulor" get stuck in my throat. And I only remeber going out of my room and through the house to get to my mom, because I couldn't breathe. She had to use the heimlich manouver and I am still, now 20 years later, a little scared of it happening again. So for that mom to not even caring makes feel so sorry for those poor kids for having someone as her for their mother

  • @Ayaforshort
    @Ayaforshort2 жыл бұрын

Story 2. That "mom" is completely narcissistic. She is so busy bragging about her precious kids trying to give them all the best crap, but she doesn't actually care if they live or die except that it makes her look bad. She only cares about the optics and the husband she is trying to keep the attention of. (Probably for his money or status.) She didn't even embrace her child when she was breathing again... She showed more passion about getting free waffle cones and playing the assault victim. Imagine if her kid had died, she acted like a freaking sociopath, just standing there annoyed.
