r/Entitledparents Idiot Karen Thinks She's Smarter Than A Doctor

r/Entitledparents Have you ever heard that you shouldn't eat anything before surgery? That's because the anesthesia can cause you to throw up while you're unconscious, and you could choke to death on your own vomit. Yet for some reason, this entitled parent thinks that she knows more than an actual doctor and tries to trick the hospital by sneaking her kid some food before surgery. When the hospital finds out, they can cancel the surgery and of course the entitled mother flips out. Lady, they're trying to save your kid's life!

I always hate hearing stories about parents feeding their kids before surgery. Choking on your own vomit is absolutely horrible. My grandpa, who suffered from cancer and as a result had severe weakness, died from asphyxiation due to vomit after his nurses strapped him down to the hospital bed.

First story reminds me of the time my mom and I stopped at Taco Bell for lunch. We had just parked the car, when a woman drove up next to us and asked my mom could she watch her baby while she went inside and ordered. My elderly mother proceeded to fuss her out saying she didn’t even know us, we could be crazy people or murderers and to never leave your baby unattended with strangers. By the time my mom finished scolding her, she was red in the face and apologizing. I hope she learned something that day.

I had something similar happen to me a local grocery store. A mom asked me to watch her kid while I was sitting in my family car but I had the windows up, couldn't hear her, opened the door and the car alarm went off. Had to run inside get the keys from my mom, run back and shut off the alarm. By then the kid had changed his mind to stay in the car. The mom just laughed at me for having to run and get the keys and leave the car "unlocked near a stranger". I told her she's stupid and a jackf, locked the car and went inside. Probably not a smart thing to say but I was out of breath and pissed. I saw her inside and she was just glaring at me. Her kid seemed nice so there's that. Your mom is a legend. And pretty smart to tell a stranger to not be stupid and leave a child with a stranger.

Crocodile tears and screaming "My baby!" all while walking towards the car calmly like it was a Sunday stroll with her kart in hand. Another was a story of a man who took his kid with him to shop during black friday and he left the kid in the car. Then after filling his stuff, he called for a friend to pick him up and his buddy took him home all while the kid was still in the car on the parking spot.

The “wondering kids” story reminds me of the kids in a neighborhood I lived in before. All ages 5-12. Their parents never watched them so they always came into my yard. They pulled yard supplies out from under my porch ALL THE TIME. I’d wake up to it strung out across my yard or come home to it. Caught them in the act quite a few times. Imagine my shock when there’s 6 little kids in my yard swinging axes at each other and pushing my push mower around the yard. Shovels, rakes, all kinds of other things EVERYWHERE, but the axes? Dear Jesus that was insane. I’m glad none of them got hurt bc then the parents would’ve blamed ME. Not to mention they kept stealing my skate boards and bikes AND LEFT THEM BEHIND MY CAR, which led to them being ran over bc I couldn’t see a small skate board under the wheel while backing out. Also kept stealing my pool equipment to use as their own. Even caught them in my pool all the damn time, if they would’ve drowned, again the parents would’ve blamed me. At least I got to see the FBI raid their house one day, where all 4 adults living there were taken to jail. Apparently was big into drugs and god knows what else. Craziest story of my life tbh.

She is probably the reason in some form or fashion that ended up in prison. She probably contributed in some way to him committing a crime or more. We don't know why he doesn't want her at his place but it is probably because he wants to better himself and his life. And I am betting she wants whatever felony or felonies he had done in the past to be done again. Sometimes it is the parents that teaches the kid, and when the kid tries to get out of it then the parents start guilt tripping. But then again she is probably crazy and just expects to have her way done. I know plenty of entitled people who thinks the sun comes out because they are out.

First story, I have a question. It was mentioned that the dad didn't seem to understand what was happening. Did anyone stop to think that he just needed some serious educating about being a father and how leaving a child in a hot car could possibly kill it? It is entirely possible that he had no idea about that, whether because he's an idiot or he had no experience with that fact and it never occurred to him. I'm all for him not having custody of his child for this mistake, the negligence is still a fact, but if it was just a mistake and he didn't realize it, I would find it extremely harsh if he never got another chance after learning from it. If he had full knowledge about how leaving his kid in the car in the heat could kill the child, then never let the kid anywhere near him again, even if it was a mistake, with the knowledge is a lot more serious than if he legitimately had no idea.

The story about the surgery reminds me of my time as an alternative worker (until 2010 every man in Germany had to choose between army duty and alternative service, e.g. helping in a hospital, elderly home etc.) I was working in the endoscopy ward of a hospital. If you have a gastroscopy you are also not allow to eat, in order to have your stomach being clean and so the doctor can see what is wrong. It is also said in all explanation talks by the doctors. Some people however choose to ignore it. One man claimed that he only ate thin soup, which in real life, according to the doctor was a full stew. Anyway: One patient came in and according to the files she was off to the gastroscopy, until she said (with a strong saxonian accent, of which I am not sure, if there is an US equivalent): "So I just had spaghetti and how you are going to stick a tube down my throat (refering to the endoscop)?" I said, that she was not allowed to eat (I am not a studied medical worker but I worked for some time at that moment in the ward, so I know how the procedures are) and let nurse know who confirmed that the procedure has to be rescheduled. To which the patient said: "But it was spaghetti! Beautiful spaghetti!"

So, your kid (or you) is hungry for a few hours. Better hungry than running into pneumonia or dead! The "mOtHeR" of that guy in the halfway home is, unfortunately, all too common. When I was about ten, my brother, mom and I were at Walmart and found a drenched toddler in a minivan screaming as loud as he could. We had staff and police out within a few minutes. As soon as they got him out of the car he started throwing up everywhere. He couldn’t even keep water down. Eventually the grandma came strolling out with her groceries and couldn’t understand why she was in trouble. She could barely speak English but begged my mom to “please help me.” We just left and to this day I still can’t believe how easy it is to forget your own child. I always use little reminders just in case and when I first had my oldest son those reminders did in fact help me in a couple situations where I was ten feet from the car without my kid. It makes you feel stupid but better than forgetting the most important thing in your life.

I used to nurse, eons ago, but working a surgical ward. The patient refused to remove her manicure/nail colour, definitely at the moment it was the hill to die on. People get scared, really scared about facing any medical procedures. The residents were organising the cancellation and I was SO far down the ladder, they let me. I went into her room and she immediately said 'I suppose you want me to lose my nails as well!' I asked her if she knew WHY her surgery would be cancelled because of this. Essentially the anaesthesiatist HADN'T told her and possibly why the staff took her so negatively, that the anaesthesiatist had to deal with anything else the surgery wasn't happening. So she was never told WHY her lips and nailbeds were so important to check for oxygen uptake. (Yes, yonks ago!) Once I explained that she immediately started to get rid of her manicure. I went back to the nurse's station and said to the doctors and nurses there that she was removing her nail colour, so her op could still happen. I was asked what I said and repeated the story.... NO ONE had bothered to do do before.

Aside from everything else that is wrong with that father who left the baby in the car, it is important to note that getting heat stroke means that the person becomes more vulnerable to getting heat stroke again, and each time they become even more vulnerable. By giving his baby heat stroke by leaving her in the car, the father didn't just risk the girl's life at the time, he made the girl's life more at risk every time she experiences hot weather or other hot places (e.g. saunas). That father put his daughter's life at extra risk for nearly her entire life, made worse because it is unlikely anyone will let her know of this extra vulnerability so she won't know to take extra precautions.

... How do people not understand that you shouldn't eat before a surgery? EVEN ANIMALS CAN'T EAT BEFORE SURGERY. When I got my cat neutered, I felt heartless to not give her anything for a whole night (her surgery was at 9am if I'm not mistaken), but I kept telling myself "Eating before a surgery would make her more harm than good. She can choke in her own vomit and she could die, when she's home, I'll give her a good amount of food". And I did it. She went through surgery, she was fine (not important but she didn't even hurt the vets, she was scared but she didn't bite nor scratch, I was proud of her for that) and when she got home, I gave her some wet food and some treats, I took great care of her until she was feeling good again. IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO NOT FEED A CHILD BEFORE A SURGERY.

My father was a sheriff's deputy in the 90's and early 2000's. When my oldest sisters were twins he went to the mall with my mother and my twin sisters in the middle of winter. When they came out to go home he noticed an infant left in the car when it was 25 degrease outside. So naturally he called it in to dispatch and ended up having to break a window to get the kid. 10 mins later the mother came out screaming at my father saying the baby was fine and that he had no right to break her window and take her kid out. My father simply pointed to the mini van loaded up with 2 infants and said I do understand than he placed handcuffs on her. The baby turned out to be fine and was later given to a family member to take care of and the mother was found guilty of child neglect.

Stories like that first one have convinced me that there ought to be parenting licences that you need to get from a parenting course before you're allowed to have custody of any child for a long period of time. Some people can't even be trusted to keep their babies alive, let alone provide them with a decent upbringing.

Dang that second one- ma’am your “kid” is 32 wtf I think it’s super cool how that person runs that place though. it’s actually super important for people who are just out of prison to get help starting their lives back up again.

I work with ex-offenders in the community and I can say with great certainty that many of the men and women who go to prison have their parents (or close family members) to thank for the experience. Whether it's violence and beatings, emotional abuse or even sexual abuse - some kids don't stand a chance of escaping prison in later life. I get really pissed off with people who contemptuously declare rubbish like "don't do the crime, you won't serve the time" or "there's no smoke without fire". While these men and women fight for survival, often ending up on the streets, hooked on drugs or dependent on alcohol to cope with the pain they've been through, their abusers get off scot-free - our society is truly insane.

Seriously why do parents blatantly disregard our orders to not feed their kids before a surgery? Do they assume we’re just trying to be mean? Or that we just won’t know? Or do they assume it’s just not that big a deal and we only brought it up for a “fun little challenge”!?!?

I'd be calling the police if it was a dog, too. It's illegal to leave an animal in a car in several states.

The mom and son from the first story are heroes. I cannot, for the life of me, know how someone can pass a car even with the windows partially down pass by a child or animal in a car!!! I’m in the Southeast US where it can be close to 100*F, a 100% humidity, no breeze and the parent(s) can’t understand why you’re upset. (I was a cop for 20 years). I put up with it the first couple of times trying to ‘reason’ with them but soon I just called an ambulance as soon as I got there or saw it. I found out if they are that “ACLUESTIC”. (Without a clue, they needed a lesson from a judge!

A friend had some surgery scheduled and was due to stay in hospital for a week to recover. The nurses were extra vigilant to ensure that she didn't have anything to eat prior to the surgery, even chewing gum. Apparently, they'd had someone the week before who decided that chewing gum was fine. Their surgery was cancelled as a direct result. Why? The brain tells the stomach to prepare for food and the extra stomach juices can cause you to chock whilst under general anaesthetic. Simple rule: When you are told "nil by mouth" they mean it.
