I'm black too. This song is about the Mona Lisa, a "simple prop" whom Da Vinci cherished and toted with him wherever he went. The Mona Lisa is actually the image of the beast from the sea discussed in the Bible's Revelations. Da Vinci himself was one head of the beast in fact. He's a vampire who can age backwards, and he's also been known as Otto von Bismarck and Adolf Hitler. These 2 statesmen were stylistically different but their underlying bone structure was identical. And the German King at the time voluntarily conferred all of his power and authority to Prince Otto for some strange reason. This unprecedented event parallels the Biblical description of the beast's ascent to power. Here's the catch: America was originally ordained by God as a free land for whites. For the Gentiles specifically, which is virtually inclusive of all whites. Therefore I have a neutral attitude towards the fact that my great-great-great grandpa Otto is the Devil. This song fills my heart with sentimental nostalgia although I know exactly what it's about.

Altogether this song is reminiscent of old European nobility whose nearest neighbors were miles away. Transportation took forever in the horse-and-carriage days, so these people would usually only gather for special occasions like balls, weddings and affairs of state. Their social skills were very formal by our standards because meeting people wasn't an everyday thing. And they learned to love their valuables, their "simple props" more than other people. These sentiments are enjoying a resurgence in our 1% era and Stipe was ahead of the game with this song.

Back in the early 80’s my sister’s boyfriend saw R.E.M. play when he was in college. They split up, and she never forgot him. She died from Covid and I got word from him. Although my sister and he had both lived different lives, he said she had been the love of his life. Perhaps the band wrote this song about people being used, perhaps drugs. To me it will always be a man crying it out to a lost love, the “prop” being the actual words, or poetry, of the song. ❤️

It's about the Mona Lisa. She was a simple prop whom Da Vinci loved. He brought her with him everywhere he went, like she was a helpless child he had to look after. This portrait was allegedly Da Vinci in drag. The cross dresser in this video has similar hair to the Mona Lisa and her facial features resemble Da Vinci's. The Mona Lisa is actually the image of the diabolical Beast from the Sea described in the Bible. That's how I know the drag queen resembles Da Vinci. He's still alive and I've watched the videos he's made under another of his pseudonyms. The scenes where the drag queen has one foot in a pedicure soaking bowl represents the Beast's amphibious nature. It has 2 habitations of both land and sea.

2024 mais alguém curtindo deixa um like 😊
It's always amazing to see how many people think this is a love song. It isn't. It's a song about someone that keeps using other people for their own selfishness. The band has said repeatedly that it was a dark song. It quickly started to be their number one hit so they just let people think of it as they want. Listen to the lyrics, not the music. The lyrics are all the same, they just repeat. The only difference is the last verse. It changes "a simple prop to occupy my time" to: This one goes out to the one I love This one goes out to the one I've left behind Another prop has occupied my time This one goes out to the one I love
I'd argue that the "simple prop" lyric is ambiguous if we look at the words in isolation. Is the simple prop "This one" or "the one I love". Stipe has offered conflicting explanations of the lyric in interviews over time, as any good artist should. If you hear a love song I think you're just as correct as if you hear a hate song.
Still a haunting sound after all these years... I love this song ❤️

Here’s one song that was never supposed to be a love song. The band actually almost didn’t record the song because they felt it was “too brutal, … really violent and awful,” according to lead singer Michael Stipe. The title may be misleading, sure, but the lyrics sure aren’t. Calling your lover “a simple prop to occupy my time” sure doesn’t sound like a romantic overture.
i love R.E.M R.E.M is one of the greatest rock bands in history. Personally I think this band was ahead of it's time, amazing stuff
This reminds me of junior high. I used to see the video on MTV after school. I was so mesmerized by music back then. I'm not sure what happened to talented artists. Sigh, what a weird and confusing world we live in today.

+samsquanch1996 haha true but we had no cell phones or Internet. It was very different back then. I almost got kidnapped walking home and I had no way of calling anyone. We had to actually use Walkmans with tapes. I still think it was a better time but I'm sure every older person says that lol.

I'm 14- my teacher played this in the class and now I'm obsessed 😍
I've been playing Automatic for the people in the car for a few days now. My Fiancé who hadn't heard anything other than Losing my religion, has just told me how much she is loving R.E.M. and she's surprised how underrated they are. Apparently paving the way for the alternative Rock scene and selling almost 100 Million albums is being underrated 🤣🤣🤣
R.I.P. Bill Rieflin, thanks for the music!! See you on the other side. Rock On!! :(
One of the Greatest Love Songs. There is always that one. But.😁
If someone did a Celtic Folk cover of this song, I'd die from the sheer epicness!
So great to finally have these beautiful pieces of art remastered! This one looks so sharp now it's almost uncanny. It seems as if most great music has been remastered, but for whatever reason most groups continue to ignore their classic music videos, sometimes even still having the official uploads in 360 or even ghastly 240p, not even passable 480. Bravo to R.E.M. for restoring these classic clips!

Hi I recommend an indie song called 'Don't Lie To Me' By Robert Nix
The Band that has interpreted music in its most artistic form in the sense of ART. Their music videos and Long Play covers are timeless works of art.
It can mean anything you want it to..thats whats great about music and your imagination.
R.E.M. was one of the greatest bands of my childhood ❤️❤️❤️🎸🤘
I love how people think this is a romantic song when it’s anything but there’s literally lyrics that say a simple prop to occupy my time

I used to hear this song in the gym working out and didn't really listen to the lyrics, which are truly creepy. If you can imagine, people were using this song at weddings. A song that talks of a person as being a prop to occupy his time. That said, it's a terrific piece of music.

Because of the wording, you can interpret the simple prop line to mean something other than the person. I would have probably thought it referred to the song being a simple prop to occupy the singers time (maybe when they are apart) It doesn't really make sense to me that a person you love is "a simple prop to occupy my time" it's like saying "this is for the person I love, but I don't really love you I'm just using you." One part cancels out the other...

@@donnamack6797 I was 14 when I heard it I never really understood the lyrics, my cousins and I used to watch it when it was on MTV when MTV actually had music videos on it, we always imitated the part where he says fire and the guy has his mouth completely wide open trying to say fire and we always laughed at that, yes like you said a little creepy side but a great song.

This song makes me think of all the girls that I loved in high school, but let slip through my fingers because I didn’t tell them how I really felt about them.

im with you. i was always so stoned in high school and would get so nervous like heart beating out of my chest. weed is not very conducive to conversing with chicks. Like, .. lets go to a party.... but take bong rips before we go. Great idea. Once i got comfortable with myself 19-20 i kinda went rogue... im guessing i was trying to make up for all the missed opportunities. So many beautiful women in the world and i was crazy for them all... still am
After my husband died, this song played relentlessly and I felt that he was sending me a message from beyond... "Fire"
I'm surprised a song that is only 3 lines said 3 times is so good
