Lyrics:
Hey now, little speedyhead,
the read on the speedmeter says
you have to go to task in the city
where people drown and people serve.
Don't be shy. Your just deserve
is only just light years to go.
Me, my thoughts are flower strewn
ocean storm, bayberry moon.
I have got to leave to find my way.
Watch the road and memorize
this life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
The ocean is the river's goal,
a need to leave the water knows
We're closer now than light years to go.
I have got to find the river,
bergamot and vetiver
run through my head and fall away.
Leave the road and memorize
this life that pass before my eyes.
Nothing is going my way.
There's no one left to take the lead,
but I tell you and you can see
we're closer now than light years to go.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
Fall into the ocean.
The river to the ocean goes,
a fortune for the undertow.
None of this is going my way.
There is nothing left to throw
of Ginger, lemon, indigo,
coriander stem and rose of hay.
Strength and courage overrides
the privileged and weary eyes
of river poet search naivete.
Pick up here and chase the ride.
The river empties to the tide.
All of this is coming your way.

He summed up our lives in a 4 minute song. No matter what path we choose, we all end up in the same place. He and the band make us sing along and make it seem palatable. Pure genius. One of my favorite songs.

Just prepared to start producing a cover for this now and will record first guitar track in a few short minutes. (After having listened to this on the toilet 4 inspiration) Thanks 4 the video and please Wish me feeling! 🙏🤩

You hear the love for the song at the start. A song about mortality and the river we all will find when our time comes. When I do leave this mortal coil if I have the cognisance to choose I will leave listening to this because I genuinely believe this is a song about death. We’ve all been born and we all will die..this is a beautiful song about that passing. We all have a river and we will all eventually find it xxxx

There are so many gorgeous, profound lyrics given to us to enjoy on a temporary basis by poets and song writers. The lyrics here are lovely and meaningful, but I sure wouldn’t discount so many others .... how about these from the Floyd? “Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning” I’ve never seen dappled sunlight coming in a window and not thought of these lyrics. That said, REM certainly did leave us beautiful artwork, and I’m so grateful to them. I’m glad art is not like sports with cut and dried winners and rankings. The more you find, the more there is, and on and on and on ... “ . . . Ooh, it makes me wonder . . . . “ 🎶

The nineties are the phase with the most creative albums and songs from R.E.M.. Automatic for the people and New Adventures in Hi-Fi are masterpieces. Up (very electronic) and Monsters (very guitar based) are very special but with good songs. Out of time are very commercially.
