I think the traffic symbolizes people's pain. They are all stuck in their pain, isolated in their cars, alone in their thoughts. They get out and together, are able to walk away from it. Leave it behind. The pain still exists, but they have found a way to get past it. They weren't really alone.

REM were one of my dad's favourite bands, he died when I was 12, and this song was played at his funeral. I'm 27 now and I still listen to this song regularly to remember him. Love all your reactions, keep up the good work. Staying home here in Kent, let's protect the NHS 👍

It is a very sad song, but it also offers hope. Hold on, take comfort in your friends, you're not alone. I can see it's getting to you at the moment so I just want to thank you for all the entertainment you've provided me, made me smile. Staying home is the right thing to do, good on you. We are under lockdown in Straya too. Stay safe and strong 😊

Hey guys, haven't been back for awhile. This song is a trigger for me. When I was caring for my precious mother who had terrible dementia, I would get so down and I'd play this song. It's weird but sometimes when you are down, hearing a sad song that so seems to be getting your emotion, can actually turn you around. My mom has been gone almost four months now and I have listened to this again many times. Sadly, for the lead singer Michael Stipe, this song took on a meaning he couldn't have known. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana really loved REM and he and Michael Stipe became great friends. Michael is the godfather to Kurt and Courtney's daughter. He had been laying plans with Kurt to do a project together to get Kurt away from his serious addiction and beyond sad, that we all lost Kurt before that could happen. I don't know why I brought that up, but there it is. It's good to see your channel again. I hope you are both well and your family as well.

I live with clinical depression (major depressive disorder) and my emotions were very much not things I would allow myself to feel for years, because they were so suffocating. But something happened that just gobsmacked me, and it hurt me so bad I was in physical pain. But it wasn't sadness or despair, like usual. This time it was joy, and it hurt me more than the low feels ever did. It was so devastating that I have been chasing it ever since-not attempting suicide and actually living.

Just an epic reaction. Mind you, they never brought up R.E.M. or their lead singer or the artistry of the band or their impact on music. They never mentioned how great Michael Stipe is They just concentrated on the core problem the song brought. And you know what? Who cares if R.E.M. were ignored. I am sure R.E.M themselves won't be sad, because there are more important issues than just promotion of a song. I think Zack and Sam properly paid tribute to the song and its lyrics the best way possible. As always, I am truly impressed by these two.

Hey guys, Don't know if you'll read this but here it goes. I'm 59 years old, disabled from a car accident many years ago. I've survived cancer twice, three (3) heart attacks (the last one affected my brain so I've lost a lot of my precious memories) and a lung infection that kills 80% of the people who contract it, although left with pretty severe lung damage. And a murder/suicide of my most amazing "Sister by Another Mister" who I was supposed to be with but I KNOW was stopped from being able to go with her (another story, another time) Prior to all that I have SURVIVED childhood sexual abuse that happened 3 times by 3 SEPERATE people (I was 2-3, yes I remember it, 8 years old and 13 years old. All within my family. I never told my parents. That's a different story. Fear instilled by the abusers, etc.), an abusive marriage and just a whole host of things that could make your toes curl. I have, for whatever reason, survived things that should have killed me including 3 different suicide attempts and 2 NDE's. But I'm still here, so I figure I'm supposed to do something I haven't finished yet. I don't know what "That Something" is but maybe I'm not supposed to. Maybe I'm supposed to tell my story to you. I don't know. But I CAN tell you this song actually saved me from trying anymore times. This song, (or reactions to it like yours) has come into my face, when the darkest times have come for me. This last heart attack was it., November 2020. When all you have are memories, they are so precious. And then you lose them..... It has been my husband and my 16 year old who have kept me going when I just want to stop but it's also my heart as well. So I hang on I do believe that every day is a new start and you can climb out of that dark place. It is not always easy but you can do it. I believe we are all here for a reason. Not everyone's going to change the world but we each have the opportunity to maybe change a life for the better, whether that is human life or animal's life, we can change it and maybe never know we did. Sometimes, when I can't walk, or write or even talk right I get very frustrated or sad but then I hear this! I DO cry through it every time I hear it, even this time but I STILL hear the words at the end: You're NOT alone! You're NOT alone! You're NOT alone! And I hang on. Thank you if you read this. Blessings be for all of you! 💖🤗🙏🤗💖 Patti
