R&B Guitar Soloing - Start with THIS FIRST [Justin Bieber's Yummy]

kerryskamp.com Recently on Instagram, I played a solo to Justin Bieber's Yummy and got a lot of requests to do a tutorial of what I did. In this video, I'm showing you my approach. Hi, my name is Kerry 2 Smooth! I am a guitarist, producer, and instructor from Los Angeles, California. I desire to help as many people as I possibly can unlock their full potential as a guitar player. KZread is one of my favorite ways to do so.
In this R&B guitar tutorial, I'm going to teach you my approach to soloing to Justin Bieber's Yummy. I focused on the melody, which I'll teach you. First, I need to know what key the song is in. It's in the key of F major. The relative minor is the D minor. So I focus on the d minor chord to play the melody. As I play the melody, I'm thinking like a singer and look for ways of giving the "sauce".

This is EXCELLENT! I appreciate the way that you got into even more depth than with the first video you posted from the new Bieber album (which was also well done). Having purchased one of your programs and having the desire to grow as a soloist, this is invaluable. Hearing your expound on the thought process is especially helpful. Most helpful was your advice regarding focusing on the melody and expanding from there. I’d pay for even more depth on the topic.

Hi Kenny, love your version of this song! Is there any place I can go to listen to your music? I would like to download a playlist with this type of r and b on the guitar, however I have no idea where to go to listen to this type of music when I’m cooking, reading, or just vibing. Please help!

A good piece of knowledge most might overlook (tonewise) from this, and perhaps you could elaborate a bit...is how to use COPIOUS amounts of delay and reverb on a gainey/fat/soaring lead sound but having the mix/blend set juuuust right so the notes and phrases dont get clouded by it 👌👌👌 good video homie

Hey Kerry, I know you read most of these and I've recently discovered and fallen in love with your approach as a teacher. I really appreciate the content. I do have a request/question on maybe something you can address. I've noticed (and love) some of the chord voicings you use over spots in some of your videos that you can apply to its function in any key, similar to chord substitutions, but you seem to do in colors (moments where you've got 9ths, 11ths and other "non chord" tones) but I'm having an extraordinarily difficult time finding examples elsewhere on the internet or even having a name for it. I'd refer to it as "color substitution" for now, because it's not exactly chord substitutions. One particular example I've seen you do in the Childish Gambino "Into You" tutorial and a few others would be on a minor 7th chord. Ex: you momentarily played the voicing in 5th position on the A through B strings where the notes were (from lowest to highest) D-G-C-E which you used to create movement by going to D-A-C-F both ascending and descending. It seems to work for both anywhere you may find a ii or vi chord. That's just one example I've ripped from you but I was wondering if you could do a lesson about different types of "colorful" voicings you use over certain chord functions since I cannot for the life of me find anything else. Between those voicings and walking through the changes using leading tones chords like dominant and diminished to create walking lines, you've opened up a whole new world from these videos. Keep with the "this is how you play this, it functions like _______" method since it reallllllllly works for someone like myself who knows theory but struggles to really find musical and practical ideas. You're doing a great service. Thanks!

Kerry bro love your content, been watching it for long long time man. I have a question. "Do you think the days of RnB is gone?" "Is RnB Dead?". With everyone so busy with production, latest plug ins. What do you say is the future for RnB? will there be a organic sound of that sweet RnB guitar? I got into RnB with "Let me love you" by Mario.
