Yeah. He overheard them talking to a friend about him being a free babysitter. How can someone have a child and expect someone else to raise them, especially not even ask or talk about it first? Just, "my dad will do it. He's retired and has the time when we want to spend ours being selfish, young and free". His daughters make it sound like he has no right to retire and he shouldn't have his free time to himself.

Marriage and childbirth are two majorly transformative events, and if you haven't been married for long, or haven't had children, you don't know what you don't know. I think the dad was correct to establish a boundary, but also has a coaching opportunity. His kids are going to go through a massive right-of-passage and will likely (hopefully) emerge much more mature.

I have to disagree with rSlash about how every culture since the beginning of time expected parents to raise their kids, because a lot of cultures in the past had a lot of people help in raising kids. I just learned the other day about the Hawaiian tradition of hānai, where kids would be given to / informally adopted by another person to raise; said person was maybe childless or even was the grandparents. That said, our modern culture expects the parents to be the primary guardians and upbringers of the child, so the couple in that story is in the wrong.

I think both the wife and the friend have issues. What kind of person waits until the week before the wedding to try to talk one of the partners out of it? That train left the station a long time ago, and a real friend would not mention it because bringing it up is only going to wreck their friend's happiness. She only wanted him after she found out she couldn't have him? Seriously! The OP, though, should have stayed at the dinner to monitor the interaction. Remind him later in private that he broke their agreement about no longer interacting with the former friend. Making a scene to test the husband's loyalty was pretty poor form, and also counterproductive. He may well have been motivated to stay longer at the dinner just to prove that she doesn't have him on a chain. As for the husband, I'm having a hard time telling if he is just oblivious to how his wife is going to react when he unilaterally invites someone she doesn't care for to join them for dinner, or if he is a jerk who doesn't care. This is one of those "they all suck" stories.

That second story didn’t add up in my opinion. Yes if he didn’t look after the child the whole time op was out that’s neglect. But I believe that he probably did take care of the child and the baby had a nap and op is just completely blowing out the neglect statement as he found time to stream. Op sounds very controlling when she states about fitting it in to the schedule yet goes out grocery shopping for 4 hours and explains how she was concerned the whole time due to him just saying the baby is asleep. Why didn’t op go home sooner if she was that concerned. Why couldn’t op spend a couple hours shopping and let her partner stream for a couple of hours

I would've given her a butthole score too for publicly embarrassing her husband. Yes, he was in the wrong, but it could've been handled more tactfully off camera. His butthole score was probably on point, but she deserves 1 or 2 buttholes too. With already 14,000 followers, it's possible he was gaining more and more each day, which could lead to more income. But now, it looks like he's a joke and a douchebag. It may have killed his career as a KZreadr. Also, it was never mentioned if he had been streaming the whole time or only a few minutes before she confronted him publicly. If he had been checking on his daughter up until shortly before his wife returned, he's not really a butthole. It's possible his daughter was sleeping every time he checked on her, and a few hours had passed, so he decided to start streaming knowing his wife would be home soon anyway. Hard to say with the info given of the situation.

True. Even though she is getting some time to reprieve, the father can't just ignore the child so he can stream. Besides, people love babies and understand if needed to step away to change her. There is a lot that can be done to incorporate some of the stuff into the streams, like feeding, and can even set up a pin nearby for her to do her thing and you still do your thing. Both parents should make time for the other to have the kids so one of them can decompress. Like it isn't too hard to shop with a baby in tow. A lot more households have two working parents instead of just one working parent which makes childcare a lot more difficult. Cost of living has also skyrocketed in more urban areas as well. Socially also, the amount of involvement in a child’s life expected from a parent is higher than in previous generations and also spans for a longer period (caring for your child till they turn 18 as a social norm vs till they graduate college). Paying for a child’s college education has also become expected of parents, and more children are going to college. All in all, parenting has somewhat become more difficult because of increasing costs, a changing social landscape, and an expanding definition of what it means to be a parent. That being said it’s still so wrong of story 3 to expect their parents to take care of their kid 24/7 so they can “have fun”

Jokes on her… she destroyed my life so bad… not only is none of her children talking to her… but no one is putting her in a home. That is her future. I will never forget my mom said the same thing after she had her youngest child. “I’m going clubbing because it’s MY time now..” and at the age of 23, I told her that her time will begin when the youngest is 18. She wasted an opportunity to finally be able to have a life simply because she is a narcissist and has children so that they will worship her (her words not mine). I feel so so sorry for their future children if that is the mentality of her parents. Also quick question who parties that much at 27? Or 25? Naruto treats women bad enough in its as is, we don’t need gatekeepers making things more horrible. But in all seriousness, this comment is a generally good take. I agree

When my oldest was an infant, my aunt agreed to become her babysitter while my husband and I were at work. She offered to do this, and I paid her for her time. If she hadn’t offered, I would have found another sitter or daycare.

My father had this lady friend while married to my first stepmother (and his fifth wife) that would always pop up "unexpectedly". He constantly told me and my younger brother not to mention to our stepmom that we'd seen her. It was all very awkward and uncomfortable that he made us accomplices in his cheating. He never admitted to cheating on our stepmom with this woman, although I did catch them making out once, which made me devastated, but he told us that he had an affair about thirteen months before our stepmom had had enough and filed for divorce. He married my stepmom eleven days after the divorce from my mother was final, in 1999, and the marriage lasted until 2011. Let's not forget the fact that he cheated on my mom with her...

Regarding the 3rd story, my Step-mum and dad ended up having to move as they were constantly having to drive ~50 miles each way to pick him up when they'd had enough, my Dad is not happy about this, primarily as they have left a two bed bungalow with a large garden to live in a 1 bed flat (though they are on the ground floor and there is only one floor above them) on the outskirts of a city.

Last story: something similar happened to me when I walked into a comic book store. I really love graphic novels and there was a comic book shop near where my school is so I decided to drop on by to see if they had any new graphic novels I haven't read yet. Let me tell you it was very very unwelcoming. I was stared at, glared at and no one spoke to me or offered help who worked there. (It's a very small store too so they definitely knew I was there.) It was just very uncomfortable and I was there for maybe 5 minutes before I left. I know it's not as bad as what OP went through but it was definitely a situation where I was made to feel inferior/uncomfortable/unwelcome in a male dominated hobby.

Best case: They have a female working in the store. They don't pull this stunds because they had been treated the same way and they often are extremely competent because they have to deal with the neck all the time.

@@Nerobyrne Comics are a visual medium where the story is told via text and illustrations. Out of all of the women I know, the ones who are into comics either grew up as tomboys or have more masculine personalities. My own sister is into the MCU and Witcher series, she has read a Black Widow novel and plans to read the entire Witcher series of books. I offer the ability to experience some different stories via a comicbook or the Witcher game series and she turns me down on both as she prefers to either just watch it or to only have the pictures be in her head. She even balks at the price of commissioning an artist for a custom piece, as her argument is literally "You can get something vaguely similar from Brand store, cheaper as a print". Almost all of the artists I follow are women and they're in my eyes, the best artists I could find. However, the women I know who aren't artists have no appreciation for what it takes to create art as a profession.

the human experience REALLY isn't about having a kid. You are not worthless or missing out if you do not have children. BUT, if you do decide that you want to have a kid, it should definitely be your priority, whether you like it or not

  • @alexfriesz1

I would disagree that "having a family and raising a child" is the best years of your life and the human experience. Some people may find the best years of their life in a club, or doing other things that don't involve having kids, or even a partner, at all. However, I will say that if you are going to have a child, you need to be committed to having that child. That means all the responsibilities that come with it. Some people are not cut out for that, and that's ok, but they can't just go have a child and then just pass it off on someone else like some kind of trophy pet.
