r/AmITheA**hole for Not Giving my House to a Single Mom for Free?

Комедия

r/AmITheA**hole In today's episode, OP inherits a house from a deceased family member. OP's cousin, who's a single mom, shows up and expects OP to literally just hand over her house, completely free. Even OP's relatives are asking OP to sign over the house because single moms have such a struggle. Do you think OP is the butthole for refusing to hand over a literal house for FREE?

Granny knew what she was doing when she gave OP the house. I doubt that the Grandma was unaware of the cousin’s situation. She gave the house to the person she thought deserved it.

First Story, NTA: Imagine demanding for someone's house because they have kids. Having kids is no excuse to try to demand a house for free. OP's grandma gave him the house, no one else did. OP is selfless not selfish Second Story, NTA: The death of a loved one is not something u should joke around with. Never make someone guess which family member died. OP's husband is horrible for trying to make OP guess who died Third Story, NTA: Soooo in the budgeting story, we going to skip over the fact that the niece got engaged after 4 months of dating???? Anyway, all OP did was help their niece succeed in life and make better choices; especially since she was rushing into a marriage after 4 months of dating. But hey, at least OP exposed his niece for being a gold digger Fourth Story, NTA: OP's boyfriend is just being lazy and is trying to make OP his free maid. I would’ve done the same thing honestly. If he want to pretend to he dumb about chores then he has to suffer the consequences Fifth Story, YTA: First off, the cake didn’t belong to OP in the first place so she ate something that didn’t belong to her. Second, being pregnant doesn’t makes u entitled to eat whatever u want nor do whatever u want. Third, it IS disrespectful because the birthday girl should always get the first slice. OP doesn’t have impulse control. If OP wanted something sweet she could’ve got something sweet herself

Yeah i disagree with rslash there, honestly dont think op manipulated her, he warned about the numbers probably being higher than what it would actually be. He only showed her the truth, it was all up to her to decide to stay on the hard route with her fiancé or get an easy slack on dads money. The way she acts just speaks to me that she didnt really loved him that much nor was ready to marry.

Never had to deal with this with moving out on your own budgeting, but I've dealt with it with plan for the baby Budgeting. It was great with Babies R us to make a basic list of what they would need, send them off into the store to try and fill a registry, and watch them turn white as ghosts as half way through the list the total number is beyond anything they ever imagined. Sometimes the easiest way to show people they're not ready for something yet is to scare them to hell and back with monetary figures and responsibility.

He showed her that even working 12 hour days 6 days a week at an exorbitant salary she couldn't meet the expectations SHE had financially. She expected to live the same life she was accustomed to and OP showed her that even assuming you're willing and able to basically work non-stop, she was being unrealistic. He did not manipulate her. For the budgeting story, OP put a number in the box for "husband's income." No one had the right answer. Would it be better to just put 0 in the box, and then base the budget only on niece's income?... Actually, maybe. But I still don't think OP "manipulated" the situation. The end result of teaching niece the reality of "being on your own" was still in place.

It's not that he was stupid. He was incredibly smart. But we always had to wash the dishes again after he did them. Every single time. And EVERY load of laundry he did wound up either ruining clothes or breaking the machine, and usually both. This was the same man who wondered why the clothing budget was so high, and didn't notice that Mom bought him new dress shirts for his office job at least once a month. Why? Because he'd come home from work, see something that needed doing RIGHT AWAY (nothing could ever wait), and no matter how many times she said, "Dear, why don't you change into your grungy clothes first?" he would always respond with, "It's fine! I won't get dirty!" She could often salvage his dress pants, if they were dark, but the white shirts? Never. She gave up, and just started buying new white dress shirts, by the box-load.

On the budgeting story, OP didn’t suggest at all that the niece break up with her fiance. If she wanted to make it work, she would’ve sat down with the guy, had an open and honest conversation with him about finances, and make a game plan going forward. Marriages will not always operate on the best conditions. One partner might lose a job, get into a car accident, or lose a loved one. Even positive changes such as a new house or a big promotion are stressors and can dramatically test a relationship. The important thing is that both partners work together and keep each other supported when the ground shifts. The fact that her first reaction to him making less money than OP’s example was to jump ship shows that she wouldn’t have been mature enough to handle marriage. Because even if he made six-figures, chances are she would bail if he suddenly lost his job and could no longer support her.

  • @vegasrenie

My husband broke down with me when he found out my brother died! I had actually heard it over my radio on my and was on scene in seconds. Thank heavens the State Troopers that responded knew me. My husband came home immediately. I was still dressed in my military gear but I was going to the morgue so he wouldn’t be alone. My husband said ‘not without me, you’re not!’ Yes, I know he was dead but we were thick as thieves and I really wasn’t in a good frame of mind. Our kids were home on break from Uni but we didn’t want them alone so my husband arranged for them to go to my best friend’s house for the night. We spent 18+ hours at the morgue waiting to see him after his autopsy. He held me, helped me stand, made sure I ate…that’s a life partner! He still sees that “look” in my eyes and holds me. OP, get a divorce attorney now. You’ll never have the true support you need. I’m tough as nails and never cry but that day I learned, some things break you beyond repair.

So my brother who is now has two children got the house because we have a lot of family stuff still in the house that would take years to sort out so it makes sense to have him own house since he's going to have more children in the future. He pays the mortgage and nobody's upset about it.

The story about the "lazy" husband: that is weaponized incompetence, a form of gaslighting! It's a tactic people use to manipulate others into taking on more work bc they make themselves seem so incompetent at a task that the effort to teach them properly is too much to bother. It results in the other person deciding its just easier to do it themselves, increasing their workload, and the first gets off scot free. The way to stop it? Either teach them while treating them like children and make them feel stupid for "not knowing" how to do something, or make them live with their laziness like OP did.

I had to hand clean all the dishes. When I moved out, I had to have my boyfriend teach me how to use a dishwasher. I wasn’t being lazy, but he almost didn’t believe me that I had never used one before.
