What gigging experiences can you share?

I really love this video. I agree with with all your examples. If you are not happy with the venue you are playing at then it will show in your performance.

Playing for decades, I've refused just two gigs before. "Battle of the Bands", and "Great Exposure". The over-the-top sales pitching for both didn't sit well with me, it was all too much at contrast with musicianship. For the 'Battle', I had never invested in any musical weapons, didn't practice with any ammunition... and it would all have been Friendly Fire anyways. The guys argued it for just a couple minutes, not too roughly but so it was. We ended up backing out, and found another gig quickly, with very good luck. No "Battles", the rest of our wonderful years together. For the "Exposure" gig, we would have made the venue money (which they weren't about to expose US to!)....with no even somewhat fair balance in contribution and gain. We did play for free at OUR choice before, at a couple of benefits. I view these differently. Others may or not...and that's perfectly alright, to guide yourselves as you see fit, for each individual gig. A side note, loving your "musician job" SO much that you "would do it for free", in no way obligates you to a vow of poverty. Who wants a job where you're paid for NOT being happy? There's much room for basic integrity as a musician, while having the BEST overall livelyhood. It's a good place to live. :)

Me and a guitarist gigged yesterday his string broke mid song so we got through it had to wait for him to replace the string he did then couldnt get it in tune so i did it to a backing track whilst he fixed his guitar then i did the ultimate no no as a singer i forgot a fucking line to a song i have sang for years ugh it was terrible i covered it well he fixed his guitar we got through the rest but it was awful

one of the important thing to me ....(this goes for non-musicians as well.. relationships, everything...) when a person mistreats you at your work, or in your life and you allow this/go along with it, you are saying it's ok, and this person will keep doing it or do it to the next person as well. We have to do our best to stand up for ourselves and stand together so people value their creatives and entertainers. recently i quit a gig because :) ... I had a venue that in covid wanted to pay me half price because it was really empty. I said ok at the moment because it was a crazy and difficult moment for everybody, but we understood that when the crowds came back, so would the pay. In September/October the restaurant is full now. I told them my price, which was less than a 2 or 3 person table would spend all night at that fancy restaurant, and they are now always full... They told me they would NEVER, NEVER pay a musician that much, I am crazy. I had a decision, trust that I will find other work that values me (which I did) or ... I could stay and allow this guy who doesn't pay musicians a fair wage to carry on with this attitude and this way. I stood my ground. I would love to be playing there now, it is full and great location, but I had to stick to my principals, and not reward the management's bad behavior. I knew if I agreed to play for this guy, I would be saying it's ok to pay other professional musicians this amount, so I made the decision not only for me but for the principal and because he obviously didn't see our value. Stand you ground my friends.

Being a live performer can be very disheartening at times. There are warning signs when you attempt to get a gig. A gig is not the "golden ring" so pick and choose if you have a chance. There is not a better feeling than to be treated with respect. If you have a gift that touches others, then you are truly blessed. Thanks for the info, you hit it on the head.

Thanks Andres, I'm not a gigging musician "yet" but good advice. Plus I want to help your numbers.

One thing, if you do need to talk it out with the owner or manager, I would not do it the day of the gig, as you will both more than likely be at the end of a long work day and already tired and/or on edge. I would schedule it for the next day or close to that when you both are not working or just starting the work day and have a fresh mind to approach it.

Hey man, your advice is not only for musicians, it is certainly a universal theme. No one should have to endure poor treatment by their employer whether they are full time staff or independent contractors. Though i understand your overall point, I don’t think it’s fair to summarize by saying that someone who stays in a job they don’t like must suck at what they do. Until we walk in the shoes of another, we don’t know what factors in their lives have the strongest impact on their decision making. Cheers though bro, I really enjoy your channel. You are very talented.

For each GIG we use to meet our clients few weeks before and we talk about what they wants and what we need for the GIG. It's very important for us to trust each other. ( excuse me for my bad english)

Had someone do several things to me on this list: chase them for payment, asked me to play for tips after the rate had been established, never had my space cleared, told to turn down several times. The final straw was having me play a new year's gig. I had asked if I could play 10-1 instead of 9-? so I could spend some time with my family which she refused. When I get to the venue the streets are blocked off due to a NYE street celebration with live bands outside as close as across the street. Granted this venue is hole in the wall so it's going to be next to impossible to compete with the volume of a live band across the street as a Solo Acoustic guitar player. After it taking ten extra minutes to figure out how to get close to the venue because of the blocked streets I get to the door and peer in and they are slammed and my space isn't cleared. I turned around and drove home. I'm not proud of it and it's the only time I've ever done that with a gig.

I completely agree. Plus musicians aren't beggars. You're doing your job. You put your heart, effort and time in it. If they don't respect you... Go elsewhere. It isn't worth it in my opinion. Same goes for the band(if you don't play by your self).

Hey Andres you are so correct i have played at some horrific spots where due to drunk unruly people damaging expensive gear, i eventually packed up and walked away without being paid and when i called the owner the next day he said , you will never play in this town again. Well i wished him well and the next day i got the number one gig on the beach in a five star hotel that i kept for 9 years until i moved to London. His pub closed a year later and he walked into the bar and pretended he never knew me. Oh i have had terrible gigs that i have had to play at. But all worth it as i loved doing what i do

a venue that doesn't pay on time.... or makes it super difficult to get paid

I was in an acoustic group and we played at this one club, and while we were playing, they started playing the jukebox louder than we could play. We only had their mics for singing, so that wasn't good, and the people basically ignored us. I guess we were not that good. :(
