I woke up this morning and went to the fridge. I grabbed all of my liquor and dumped it out in the yard. Today is the day I decided to get sober and it brought me here. I want to make it for real this time.

I stopped drinking alcohol two and a half years ago. I quit because I got sick of how I felt the next day, even after just two glasses of wine. Now I sleep better, and I have more energy and clearer concentration. My blood pressure is lower and my joints aren't as stiff. The best decision I ever made.

I am an alcoholic of 24 years. I’m a 43 year old woman. The longest I gave up for was 10 months. In that time I lost 2 stone and worked out 5 days a week. My body had never been fitter and stronger. I had courage. There is courage in facing the world sober. I am an addict. I have relapsed over and over again but I believe this is my journey to sobriety. I’m 3 weeks in and exercising daily. I read constantly about addiction. The more I learn the easier this is becoming. Children have to face so much and deal with life without hiding behind a source of temporary relief that drugs and alcohol provide. As adults we constantly seek out respite from the realities of life - a quick fix. I have nothing but admiration and respect for those who fight the daily grind of life sober. There is an absolute strength and resolve living life free of addiction.

I quit drinking around 7 months ago. It was time. I’m only 27, but I felt like one of these times I will either end up seriously injured, dead or in jail. The last straw was getting blackout drunk at my ex-gf’s friends wedding. Completely made a fool of myself. I hurt her more than I ever wanted to. I don’t even remember 90% of it, but apparently I was flirty, dancing and getting close with another girl, being mean to and ridiculing my gf at the time. It was so bad she even left without me. I then got even worse, got kicked out of the venue, couldn’t accept it and starting banging on doors, screaming and trying to get in. Ended up even fighting someone too. Ripped my pants, my shirt, I looked like a complete mess. The venue was in the middle of nowhere. I left the place by foot at early morning hours. Walked into random people’s houses… walked on random stranger’s properties… I think I may have got the cops called on me too. I’m not even sure how I made it home alive, and I’m not even sure how my ex-gf took me back. She pretty much did give me an ultimatum, either I stop drinking or we’re done, but by the time I had made it home and had half-sobered-up, I just knew. I had made the decision. That’s it. I’m done. Looking back. The amount of times I’ve been thrown out of clubs/bars, the amount of blackout’s I’ve had, the amount of times I’ve had super close calls to either dying or being seriously injured, the amount of people I’ve hurt, the amount of times I’ve made an absolute fool of myself… Quitting drinking has quite possibly been the best decision of my life. I don’t even bother counting how long it’s been, because I know it’s permanent. There’s no going back, ever. I love being sober. It’s really, really worth it.

@@WoWUndad oh my… I can’t even imagine. absolutely terrible. It would have deeply, deeply hurt me. I’ve thought about that before and I feel so awful about it. The way I hurt her that night was inexcusable on many levels. I honestly didn’t even deserve her back. I should have been dumped then and there. I regret it very, very much and I’m still working on forgiving myself for it. Although I would have never, ever done anything like that being fully conscious of my actions, I don’t blame the booze, I blame myself. I should have known better. I had many, many warning signs prior to that night. I’m someone who considers his loyalty one of his biggest strengths and greatest qualities. And to throw it all away and betray someone because I couldn’t put the drink down? It’s just.. I don’t know. I’m very angry at myself for it. Unfortunately I can’t go back in time and change that, but I do know that I will never, ever put any woman through that again.

These loads of "life changing" videos to stop alcohol, caffeine, sugar , for a lifetime...it would be nice to see a video where the protagonist consumes a healthy amount of alcohol or coffee or sugar and that's obviously changed his life! I live a pretty healthy lifestyle, with lots of activities, clean food, and in measure and occasionally I consume some good red wine, fresh beer, some sweet, and a good cup of coffee. Mostly I experienced that real pleasure is in moderation. I'm convinced, you don't have to say never to these things,. Be conscious, enjoy life.

And everything goes back to normal afterwards. The liver heals. But make no mistake, it’s dangerous to drink. There are many ways to get sober. Try them all. Really. For me switching to recreational marijuana saved my life from alcohol. There are many ways to quit. But, the bottom line, you need to get cut off for about 30-60 days. I go back and forth between drinking and not. I've really got to stop. I've lost so much because of it. But I'm definitely doing better than I was 5 or 6 years ago. My drunkeness caused me to cheat, then lie about it. I lost the woman I love, the mother of my son, that I still love dearly. I let my guard down and my "closest friend" at the time weaseled his way in and lied his own sociopathic lies, and she cheated with him. I'm living in my own personal hell stuck living with my mom, bout an hour away from all my friends and children, and any hope of rekindling a relationship with my son's mom... Avoid drinking.

As someone who rarely drinks, it's frustrating that so much of our society is built around drinking. If I want to go out and do something, be around people, be social, after 5pm (when the coffee shops close) the only option is the bar. Yes, I can go to the bar and not drink, but I'm still interacting with people who are drinking. More outing options beyond the bar would go a long way.

Annie Grace wrote a book called the 30 day alcohol experiment. It's NOT a 12 step program - It's a non-judgemental way to see how you feel when you remove alcohol from your life. I averaged a six pack of beer a week and rarely drank more than 2 in a sitting. But it was regular. That was 6 weeks ago. I sleep a bit better and generally feel pretty good. Continuing my "Dry January" into the spring. Maybe I'll drink socially in the future. We'll see. It also saves money 💰 and keeps empty calories out of your diet.

His diet consisted of Campbell soup, ice cream, about 20 cigars, coffee and a bottle of Maker's Mark a day. He still was driving at 110 years old.

Lost twenty friends to alcohol and motor vehicle accidents. Two uncles and one aunt also died from alcohol related diseases. Two friends from high school ended up in wheel chairs. One friend had breast cancer probably from alcohol. Ended a marriage because of her alcohol problem. Dismissed people from construction work because of their alcohol problems. I don't drink So if you want to find something better than alcohol, I design plus build homes, kitchens and furniture, participate in international sporting events, have organized national sporting events, started numerous businesses, won awards for my designs, have multiple patents, travelled the world, collect art, refinish antiques and consume cannabis regularly.

Having spent my early childhood (left at 12) growing up with my mother & step-father (both alcoholics) and experiencing abuse that still affects me today (I'm 71... that's not a typo) My sister died young from complications from heroin and her son (who was adopted by these 2 same monsters), ended up killing my step-father with a hammer. (50+ years ago) It was never investigated as a crime, but ruled an accident (my mother lied to authorities) saying that my step-father died after hitting his head on a curb. My mother died in her mid 50's of cirrhosis of the liver and jaundice. I struggle with alcohol and very close to stopping and hoping this video gives me the strength to accomplish this. I have nothing but respect for Dr. Peterson... thank you for ALL your talks, they are always excellent.

The extra cortisol release when not drinking makes absolute sense and another talking point for myself to use when I get stressed and "need a drink". If I buy any alcohol I continue to drink until it's gone (exactly like you said about not wanting to "plateau". I kicked pain meds as well a few years back and only use alcohol... One aspect of my drinking to handle stress (my mother used to give my sister and I cakes & candy) whenever times were a nightmare in our household causing weight problems for both my sister and I, which we replaced with drugs & alcohol later on. Never was able to understand my trigger points for stress and how to deal with them without self medicating... ALWAYS an excuse for me. Understanding that I could never have good friends until I learned to be friends with myself first... to be alone with myself and my thoughts without panicking = turning to drugs/alcohol to assuage these panic attacks was a revelation. I've been alone since 2013 and never been happier (I drove every woman crazy) and now workin on kicking my substance abuse problems. Better late than never..? Thank you for any and all kind thoughts in advance. (sorry for such a long story)

Your life has not been easy, but take the strength of perseverance of what you had to go through and use it as a fuel to light up your life. Try to stop for a month Dave and see how you feel and take it from there. You can do it and and after a month you will see and think with a clearer head. It's very hard to quit but it is much harder to live with the consequences and the regret that comes from alcohol. I wish you good luck. You got this. Stay strong 💜

My dry date was December 15 2018. I'm over 4 years sober and yes guys I was sent to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings by the courts. The reason I am clean and sober is because I never went back to my old friends. This was a year before the first Covid-19 infection was found in China. If I can do it, so can all of you! God bless you all. And may God guide us. Amen.

I have struggled with alcohol most of my adult life. I’ve stopped for months at a time. Now that I’ve lost my mother and my relationship ended just shortly after. I feel alone and have been drinking more regularly. I binge drank for two days and swore I was done. Then I felt so anxious tonight and had two drinks. It’s not easy to quit. I believe it is the best thing for me.
