Quirky Versys X300 Adventure Mods and Storage Solutions.

Here it is, the ready-for-adventure versys x300 with some mods you've seen and others you probably haven't.
Update: Since this video was published i have actually continued to grind down and chip away at the "walls" of the plastic housing underneath the seat so that i can store a few more items. You'd be surprised what you can fit in that little space between the square shaped plastic storage area and the fairing on the side of the bike underneath the seat.
Another Update: The Compass broke really soon after making the video. The water just flowed out of the bubble and became useless. It might be a faulty compass or simply too much vibration for any compass to handle.
Heres the video from DJ Calico Podcast on how to wire your turn signals into running lights.

    Nice video! Thanks. 99% of all x300 videos out there are some generic "review" and all say the same (it's the ninja 300 motor, the seat is too hard, bla bla). So I love to see some real usage of the bike!!

    I wonder why the Versys-x isn't more popular. Its a great bike. I wanted a small displacement, upright riding position street bike that I could commute to work and cruise. I took mine the opposite direction. I removed the rear rack, deleted the rear fender, 1 tooth up on the front sprocket and put pure street tires on it. The bike is an absolute blast in the 2 lane country roads and runs out perfect at 70-75 on the interstate. Perfect bike for a small adventure or commuter! Best part, I bought a left over 2019 with .5 miles on it for 4900 OTD.

    Glad to see you enjoying the bike! Interesting you'd try to make it more street-worthy! Definitely considering the front sprocket mod myself as I'm hoping it would make the bike a little less jumpy in stop-and-go traffic. Thanks for the comment

    @@MartialGandhi The 15 Tooth makes it so you aren't shifting 3 times through an intersection and cruises much smoother on the interstate. I took it to 100% on road because I have no interest in off roading any longer. I went from pure dirt bikes to the dual sport phase with a KLX250S, DRZ400S, and XR650L and now onto street bikes. Now I just want to be able to feel the breeze and relax. The biggest selling factor for me with the Versys was the easy riding position, the look, and the price (left over 2019 for 4500 OTD). I did add a 2020 Kawasaki Z900 to the stable but I haven't rode it yet. Got a killer deal on it, as the owner had lost his job with COVID layoffs and needed cash in his pocket.

    @@Chocolate_dragon That's very interesting. It's funny how different owners might have different perspectives on the same exact bike. Just speaks to the versatility of the x300 as both an off and on-road machine.

    Thanks for this. You give some useful extra product info. Didn't know about the tubular tool case. ...I'm left with the impression that this is more about an accessorise motorcycle rather than modifications to it though.

    I just purchased my almost new 2017 Kawasaki X300 Versys on Monday of this week. It had 1540 miles on the odometer and looks absolutely brand new! It was delivered to me by the original owner on Tuesday April 13, 2022 which is the first day that I rode my new motorcycle. The previous owner rode it to my state so that he could rest assured that I would register and title his motorcycle before he turned it over to me. First let me say that I am 68 years old. I am 5-10" tall, weigh 269 pounds and I have a 29/30" pants inseam. I looked all over for specifics on whether this motorcycle would be a good fit for me. I knew it was tall with the seat height at 30.9". But would I fit this motorcycle well. I already had a bad experience owning a 2002 BMW R1150GS that was a huge machine, a real monster. That BMW proved much too tall and heavy for me to safely handle so I sold it right away. I replaced that BMW with a 2001 R1200C Pheonix which proved much more manageable with it's seat height of a mere 29.9". But it is a 1200cc machine which means it is VERY heavy! So I bought a little Honda Grom which proved to be so much fun that I thought to myself, "wow, look at what I have been missing." Then I discovered a Blog online where a girl named Noraly is riding her 2022 Honda CRF300L from South America to Alaska. She calls her site "Itchy Boots" where she posts 3 videos per week on average. After watching her great adventures for a couple of months I decided that I must have a motorcycle just like hers. But then I discovered that the Honda CRF300L is nearly impossible to acquire right now unless you are willing to pay $2,000 over MSRP. Yikes. That is when I discovered the 310 BMW and the X300 Kawasaki Versys. I went with the Versys for several reasons. First, it was availability. Next was value and finally after watching many reviews on KZread I liked the twin cylinder water cooled engine making 40hp. So I bought one! I have ridden it 60 miles so far. This is what I can report. First, it IS TALL. We lowered the rear shocks to the lowest factory settings and now I can almost flat foot the motorcycle. It actually seems manageable although I almost dropped it going up the ramp into my shop today. Scared me a bit. The motorcycle is whisper quiet. I like this because my Honda Grom snarls like a mad dog with it's aftermarket Vance & Hines pipe. Really it is too loud. But the X300 has a very nice exhaust note. I do not plan to change this. Next, This motorcycle handles beautifully. The ride height seems tall but the bike is so friendly in every situation. I just love my new X300. Finally, this motorcycle is geared very low. Extremely low. But I guess Kawasaki wanted it this way. I go through the gears to find that I am in 5th at 37mph lol. I hit 6th at about 43 mph and that is the last gear. It seems like it should have a 7th & 8th gear lol. The bike redlines at 12,000 rpm. Whoa, that makes it a screaming machine. When you ride 65mph the engine turns 7,500 rpm. This is very alien to me and seems insane. But there is tons more throttle left after that, all the way to 12,000rpm. Amazing! This bike gets 51mpg so the high rpm must be efficient. I researched re-gearing the bike but you cannot alter it very much without disturbing the engine's code(s). For this reason I plan to leave mine all stock. Finally, the seat is very hard, most uncomfortable. I rode 40 miles today and my Fanny wanted off of this torture device. I guess I am spoiled by the Corbin Seat on my BMW R1200C. Finally, my biggest concern was, "will this motorcycle have enough power to haul my fat butt around lol". Yes it does! The low gearing is so powerful that this little Kawasaki doesn't even know that I am onboard. I get the impression that the X300 could carry a circus elephant if one was so inclined. I hope this little report will help others decide to buy a X300 Versys. I sure am happy with mine. So lite and easy to handle. That is where the fun is!!!

    Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Agreed, the x300 is a pretty versatile machine. I've taken it all over, wouldn't hesitate to ride from Alaska to South America on it (I've actually done most of that trip on a Yamaha wr250r). Don't be afraid to Rev it, it actually gets its best mileage and performance in 5th gear, from my experience. I only use 6th gear on a flat highway and when there's no wind. The x300 has pretty low torque compared to single cylinder machines so it requires more skill from the rider to get the most out of it. The good news is that once you master its unique character you can really do a lot with it for an engine with low displacement. Happy riding!

    I've had my 2018 X300 for 4 years and still love it. Seat suggestion: buy a Sit-N-Fly seat cover and put closed cell foam under it - cheap, works like a charm and lets a lot of air through. It will raise the seat just a bit, but well worth a try. Even the seat cover without foam is cushier than stock. Great bike within its design parameters. Once accustomed to the power level and then ignoring the RPM (that engine was made for high revs) it's a great bike! Some ask if it is a "proper ADV" bike.My answer is that after a 4 day, multi-state trip (all back roads, no Interstate, plus TAT section from Silverton to Moab) and going on Jeep/donkey trails and mountain passes in CO and milder trails in Moab, I'd have to say, "YES" - with proper 50/50 or 70/30 tires (mine are Mitas E07s) this bike IS a proper ADV bike... small but proper. I have Givi luggage racks and DIY Pelican cases for paneers. I may ride the rest of the TAT (eastern 1/3) on the X300. Ride it within its suspension and ground clearance limits and it delivers the goods (not for passing at 80 mph, but at 74, I don't ride that fast). I also have T-Rex skid plate and engine guards, yes heavy, but very well designed and built. I average 40-50 mph on local county roads at get 65-70 mpg (less at 70 mph). Thanks for posting a great vid about a great bike.

    Great Vid!!!I also put a T-Rex Racing skid plate and crash bars on my X300. I've dropped it twice, once from soft dirt under kick stand and once trying to pick up something off the ground without dismounting - crash bars did GREAT - pucks took to impact. And I used the same Givi luggage mounts - then adapted Pelican cases (used from eBay) - the setup works great but I used screws and can't easily dismount them cases.I consider them a permanent installation. Even with the extra weight, the bike handles like a dream. Thanks for sharing your mods, especially the electrics. We all benefit when others post the work they've done. Enjoy! -Ray, is SW Colorado.

    I would clean up the edges where you cut out that tool divider, I see you wrapped your tubes pretty good BUT over the course of lots of miles you may still wear a hole right into your tubes from the vibration over that rough edge. I had a tube that was vacuum sealed in mylar get a hole worn right through the mylar and into the tube by a smooth edged tire iron rubbing on it. And that happened on just a 3400 mile trip to Colorado and back

    As shown in the video, i use a PDM 60, which is a very expensive, but also very elegant mini computer that manages all your electronics. I think it can support up to 8 different accessories, and makes the intimidating job of wiring things very simple. If that's too expensive for you, you might consider investing in some posi-tap connectors (they cost about 1$ each) and use a multimeter to try to find a wire that goes live when the ignition is switched on. Then you can posi-tap your accessory to live ignition wire (that's gonna be your positive), with the negative lead connecting into another ground wire or the chassis. I recommend you use a fuse so that you do not damage your electrical system in the event of electrical malfunction. Don't take my word as gospel though. Do your research. Good luck!

It's about 1.5 inches taller than stock, so what i did before buying the new seat was throw some old clothes on the seat until it was a little higher, then i sat on the bike to get a feel for it. Do keep in mind that the seat change means you go from sitting "in" the bike to "on" the bike. I personally am happy with how the new seat is. I can get my feet flat on the ground but obviously with not as much solidness as before

    If you have the version of the fog lights that have both yellow and white light options that the lights have a correct orientation. The versys x300 is a fantastic bike but putting pannier bags on it does create a decent amount of wind resistance, which makes it slow down a lot at high speeds and requires you to spend most of your time in 5th gear. Anyway, what you see is a Givi pannier rack, not designed to be protective. I have wolfman rocky mountain adventure racks panniers i use sometimes, but lately I've found riding with an oversized duffel on the back lengthwise is way better for cutting down in wind and convenience.

    I made the mistake of removing the bar weights (and destroying them in the process) because couldn't find any good handguards just some cheap MX. Then later to get more wind protection I ended up buying the barkbuster with the extra weights to reduce vibration. Not cheap but the extra end weights did the trick. But for offroad I think your handguards are better because you can tilt those forward. Can you? Without hiting your fairing when tilting the handlebar?

    Thanks for your comment! For more information on how i kept my bar weights while installing the off-brand barkbusters, i have many comments about that below, as well as the specific model of off brand barkbuster i purchased. Regarding your question, unfortunately there is a lot of hardware in the handlebar area that gets in the way of installing the barkbusters exactly how you want them. Yes, there is no contact between the plastic handguards and the fairing/windscreen , even when i turn the steering column, but i really had to bend the aluminum of the handguards in very creative ways and massage the installation.

    Thanks for watching! I use the bungee net all the time. It holds my water bottle and also my riding gloves whenever I take breaks. Sometimes I even use it to carry takeout food. So yeah, great item. The compass, not so much. All the water evaporated out of it and it is totally useless, maybe I'll buy a different brand but, come to think of it, I'm not sure if these types of compasses are designed to handle the vibration of a motorcycle.

    Thanks for watching. The link for the video i used is in the video description. The Mod requires wiring the headlights with diodes and resistors. If you do decide to switch your lighting over to LEDs, i highly suggest that you get a big pack of resistors with different values so you can experiment, because the low draw of LED lights means you have to be very precise (I think the sweet spot for 1.5-2.0 Watt LED lights is somewhere between 50 and 100 ohms). Also, take a look at a wiring diagram because depending on where you wire it you may end up having your rear turn signals as running lights as well. Good luck.

    Thanks for watching the video! search "JFG-RACING Black Handguards Hand Guards - Universal for 7/8" and 1 1/8" Brush Bar For off Road ATV Yamaha Kawasaki Suzuki For Honda Motorcycle Pit Dir " on Amazon and you'll see the product i used. Sorry, but i cannot find the installation video that i mention in the video. But it's relatively straightforward once you manage to get the bar ends off, which is a bit of a tedious process but doable. If you look in your bar end you'll see a screw. You will need to replace this with a longer screw and washer when you add the handguards. The size you're looking for is M6-1.00 (search "socket cap screw")though the actual length of it that you'll need escapes me. I remember ordering 75mm, 80mm, and 90mm sizes. The screw cant be too long and it can't be too short. I think 80mm is the length you need but not 100% sure. you can order all three and one of them will surely fit. Hope this helps!

    Also just want to add that you will need to bend the handguards to make them fit and manipulate the hardware in a creative manner to get around the front brake master cylinder and all the other things on the handlebars that might impede installation. But it's doable.

    Why not mount the PDM60 fuse box inside the front cowling? That saves you from running every circuit from the battery compartment to the front.

  • @MartialGandhi

    @MartialGandhi

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the comment. Very interesting idea... I think a disadvantage might be that you'd have to splice it in to a wire carrying power rather than connecting to a terminal directly which can create a point of vulnerability (if you could even find a wire beefy enough to handle all that voltage). Also, the pdm60 has little flashing lights on it that diagnose circuits in case of an issue, and having to take off the cowling each time to diagnose a circuit is a pain. Additionally there really isnt a lot of room under the cowling, and anything you put there is more exposed to the elements than the part underneath the seat, plus you'd have to figure out a way to mount it or it would just dangle . I guess finally if for whatever reason you wanted to install an accessory on the rear of the motorcycle than you'd have to run an extremely long wire going back the other way. I think what you suggest might work on other motorcycles but i dont think id do that on the x300 personally.

    The list of modifications on your bike is long. But that is what I like about the X300 in that there are so many accessories available. What LED light did you find to replace the back reflector underneath the larger Back / brake light? I've changed over all my lighting to LED as well and that reflector to LED swap would be a good thing to do. Thank you. I have a video here on KZread showing how to change the front sprocket from the factory 14 Tooth Rubber Cushion to a J.T. Sprocket's 15 Tooth Rubber Cushion sprocket. The J.T. Sprocket's 15 Tooth Rubber Cushion is desirable to keep the gear noise down to stock loudness but make the gearing taller to reduce the RPM by about 10%. You can't go bigger than a 15 Tooth or the bike computer does several things to the dashboard (blanks the gear indicator, illuminates the ABS and Check Eng. lights and displays 2 error codes. So the computer has limits and 15 Tooth is it.

  • @MartialGandhi

    @MartialGandhi

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment. While the 15 tooth sprocket is a popular modification, i actually find the stock size to be the most appropriate for all situations. The x300 is designed to rev pretty high, and the gear ratio, i agree, can be a little wonky in the low gears but i wouldn't want to make 5th or 6th any taller than they are now. As for the LED fender replacement, the reflector size and design is pretty standard, so it should be really easy to find one online for around 8 dollars.

    Thanks for the comment! I believe I linked the handguards in another comment here. As for the lights, I was worried about that too, but actually that is not the case. There is enough of a buffer zone if I drop the bike that the edge of the tire and the handlebars create a gap that protects the lights from being smashed, assuming the bike is laid down on a flat surface.
