The problem is these poor people don't get the money they deserve for their crop. If they were paid what it was worth they would be able to eat some and sell the excess. I really dislike when people are taken advantage of. People want to get rich off the sweat and toil of someone else's back.

@@denalihedgehog it would be the same for other grain if that were the case. Im sure the governments can figure out how to pay them properly and not charge very much more. I'm sure at least the US already makes tons and tons of profit off of quinoa by elevating its worth, while paying the absolute minimum. Its sad.

This is how the system is designed. Let me point out the analogy among animal kingdom. Each of them is part of cruel food chain and we feel sorry for a deer when it's hunted by a lion or tiger. The same hunting strategy exists among humans. Some humans take advantage ( hunt ) of other's situation, maybe to feed their off spring, just like a lion would kill a deer do to feed their cubs. Selfishness is within human nature by default and unless we stop mating and promoting our own blood ( in the form of kids ) there's no hope . We are just social animals preying upon disadvantageous fellow humans.

Please forward the peruvian farmers details, We will directly buy their products in bulk and try to grow their standard of living

Such a shame. If the people who actually grow quinoa got a price nearer to its market value then none of this would be an issue. Its a similar situation for coffee producers all over the world. They produce an incredibly high value product and receive very little of in return. Farmers co-operatives do seem to be able to cut out a few of the middle-men though

of course. It's more "advanced" civilizations taking advantage of "less advanced" tribes or cultures. Unfortunatley, our "civilization" has the upper hand in terms of knowledge and market value and they are using this knowledge as an advantage over the others'. Peruvian people, are a bit behind. Unfortunatley and that is their downfall.

Bankers, big business, WEF, investors, leaders and governments etc., have become far too rich, greedy and controlling. That is the problem and nothing to do with the public who at least here in Europe should be having more children, the more the better. There are more than enough resources in this world to feed everyone, again what is wrong is the distribution of it and greedy immoral trade organisations like the Eu, ripping other country’s blind and do you remember the food mountains the Eu tipped into the sea whilst other people starved ? Like I said, they are immoral and frankly heartless.

This is really really sad, these people have access to the most nutritious food on the planet, one that you could survive on if you ate nothing else but they are dying because they would rather sell it. I know they are poor but surely the farmers could keep enough to feed their families.

Quinoa and Amaranth grow well in North America and possibly even Europe. There is probably already wild Quinoa, also known as Lamb's Quarters, Goosefoot, and Wild Spinach, growing as a weed in your backyard. There is no need to deprive these people of their important staple foods.

microfinancing could possibly help, the peruvian and bolivian governments are preoccupied with god knows what, but small amounts of financing could allow these people to purchase agricultural equipment to improve their productivity and thus their lives.

An infuriatingly Vlog which is purely looking to find a headline. Quinoa provides jobs and income to the poorest areas of Peru & Bolivia. Videos like this only serve to damage or remove their income. Instead you should promote education and further development of communities who depend on quinoa for their income. Demonising people who buy quinoa by insinuating that they are causing malnutrition in Peru only damages the people you apparently care for.

The government should just put some signs up thay say to save enough to feed your family and sell the rest to prevent malnutrition. I'm sure they can come up with a catchier slogan. Maybe not everyone can read but word will spread around.

I understand the desire to want to sell it. But like come on, surely the farmers can keep 5 or 6 pounds for themselves. My family buys quinoa regularly. Just 3 pounds of it can last us like 2 months.

Now I feel like a turd. I just bought some not knowing.will be my first time and last time ever eating it I guess.I promised myself one day I would try it and today was the day I bought it. Then I see this on the same day? What are the odds? It's like I went my entire life never having tried an avocado, then the first time I tried one I fell in love with them and found out they are as controversial as any sin. Anything new seems to be the forbidden fruit.

Maybe they should grow more and eat it? not rocket science. At 0:52, there is PLENTY of green grassland to plant on... duh... Maybe sell it at only 2 dollars or even 3 dollars a pound instead of one, and if you dont get that price, EAT IT INSTEAD.

So who is forcing them to export anything? They can eat it themselves or sell it locally, it's not like anyone is forcing them to sell it or export it.

The world is willing to pay a lot of money for quinoa but that money doesn't go directly towards them. Malnutrition and poverty usually go hand in hand but there are many factors related to them. This is only one of them and solutions are not as simple as you present them.

It would serve to reason that the agricultural sector of Bolivia is pretty consolidated... i doubt that bulk Quinoa is being exported at low prices by family farms...

How do you afford tuna if you can’t afford not to sell the quinoa? 1 dollar per pound of quinoa and I see a pound of meat in that pot. Meat is under 1 dollar per pound? Sounds like they are making more money than ever and are just stupid with their diet choices.

'Never sell out' how easy it is to judge people that may not have the means or knowledge, isn't it? You are saying to some of the poorest communities of South America to reject what seems to be a good option to better their economic income. The problem is with the systemic lack of education and how farmers always get the shorter end of the stick in globalised markets. 'Grow more and hire more farmers' - growing more is oftentimes not an option since the environmental degradation will decrease yields after a few years.
