Quincy Jones on Michael Jackson | Music 2009 | SXSW

Музыка

The 2009 SXSW Music Keynote speech from Quincy Jones contained many unforgettable moments. Among them was a series of stories about his work and friendship with Michael Jackson. After meeting on the set of "The Wiz," Jackson convinced Jones to produce his next record, and went against label advice to pursue this collaboration. What ensued was history, and 'Q' shares his unique perspective on the blockbuster of 'Thriller' and the breaking of racial barriers at MTV. As we remember Michael Jackson's music and note his deep and wide cultural impact, we thank Quincy Jones for sharing his remarkable life stories at SXSW '09.

If it wasn't for the work he did with Michael Jackosn, NOBODY in the 21st century would be asking anything of quincy jones. Yes, quincy was a great producer of tv and pop and jazz of yester-year,but let's be honest his work with MICHAEL JACKSON is why anyone recongnizes him today. Even when Quincy worked with artists in the 1970's like "The Brothers Johnson" no one was rushing to put him on an interview. It was his work with Michael Jackson that brought a new generation to recognize him.

“ Ben" won a Golden Globe for Best Song. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1973; Jackson performed the song in front of a live audience at the ceremony”. Let that be known. MJ was well known before Jones.

I hate the way Jones tries to mock a 15 year olds song like he took Michael under his wing and created off the wall and thriller as a result. Jackson had matured by then… he always forgets to mention jackson wrote and produced with his mouth the biggest hits on all three QJ albums and by bad he had no control. Jackson wrote all the songs. This guy takes way too much credit he could only sell 1million albums without Jackson. With him they sold well over 100million. You figure !

Wrong man. Quincy is the one who wanted to follow a trend known as Rap. MJ hated rap and thought it was a temporary phase. This became an issue during the Bad sessions and caused a rift between them. By the end of the Bad tour and the break after it was clear that Rap and hip hop were where things were headed. Quincy was right. By then bridges had been burned and MJ again wrongly thought Q was too old to be a part of rap/hip hop. Quincy meanwhile recorded and produced one of the best albums of all time in Back on the Block ... full of R&b, rap, hip hop, acapella, Jazz.. you name it... every major vocalist and musician in black music history were on it, but no Michael Jackson. A real shame... Dangerous was an OK album but no where near as cohesive and meaningful as what could have been. Teddy Riley is good for a one off song, but producing almost an entire album his stuff gets real old real quick..

@@wolfeyesnarina777 It's not devastating to live with unless you decide it is. We are all imperfect to various degrees. I had an eye operation at 3 years and I'm blind without my glasses for my whole life. It's a disability although not one of the worst. Vitiligo doesn't stop anyone from doing anything but it can appear to be a disability to people who are vain. Michael Jackson had plastic surgery on his nose so we already know he was vain. Watch this and tell me it's not all about attitude: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWWh0NF6oqi2iM4.html

That's not true at all. Michael and Q went on to produce BAD together but Quincy was limiting Michael and wanted too much control of his sound. Michael had to cut him loose because he was so much more than a simple studio artist. His gut feeling told him to get away because he needed to grow musically and keep up with modern times. The maturity in Dangerous compared to BAD is astounding. I'm glad he made the switch. In the end,Q was just a producer, nothing more. Their relationship was business.

SrananKing: I respect your opinion & adore Michael but I must say he didn't go in a path that was better then with Quincy. He relied on the synth drums & keyboard beats way to much. My opinion is all im saying. I Love dangerous & the songs so much!! I just always wished he'd go back to the stripped band sound cause his songwriting was SOOOO good it deserved that sophistication! People forget how great of a songwriter this man was! I just always wished he'd go back to basics for an album is all. I love Michael & I love you all & mean no disrespect in the slightest way!!! Just talking bout music & Michael who I miss everyday:(

the truth You're talking about sound but in terms of songwriting Q limited him. MJ had to push a lot for songs like Smooth Criminal. Q would never have allowed masterpieces like Earth Song or Stranger in Moscow on an album.

Michael and Q were dynamite together. I love everything they created together. But in the end I think like some people have suggested that Q was holding on a bit too tight when it came to control over the direction Michael was going in with his music. And Michael had endured a lot of that kind of control from his father Joe, and I think Michael just wasn't having anymore of that. He needed to be in control of things himself, needed to be the captain of his own ship so to speak. He was maturing and the "Dangerous " album with Teddy Riley reflected that. Michael always had some kind of internal spiritual guidance that was directing his work and he really knew the business of the music industry. Those things (along with his innate intelligence) were the reasons he was so successful. Not to mention his talent! If he had survived he would have went on to mold the music industry in ways that would have drawn other artists to him (giving them more control over their music and finances) and consolidating his own power and continued success in the industry. Michael was one very smart cookie and I think certain factions of the industry feared that and so it wasn't allowed to be. Respect to Quincy for this interview. I always enjoy hearing his stories about MJ. Some of the stories are quite amusing...like the stories about the interaction between MJ and Prince.

I think its obvious that Quincy is simply trying to demonstrate Michael's humanity, yet capability and willingness to learn and absorb. Michael was leagues above everyone else and nobody in the business was willing to see it. And because Michael was so humble, I think Quincy really wanted to work with him and help to pull that ability out of Michael.

I wish people would stop listening to the media feeding bull crap. Whether he was a good man or not that doesn't make him any less of a person. He took chances and meant alot to others. How many of you can say that you have given back to the community as he has? very few i bet. Let him rest in piece and live long through others and his music.

That's the point cs Quincy Jones was jazzy he put that magic on three albums that are absolutely best three albums ever made in popular music. They have more quality then calling them pop. Beside, Quincy was 50 he knew music world, he protected Michael. Like real father figure that he remained till Michael died.

Even after all the interviews etc, you can still tell that Quincy loved Michael. He was a father to MJ. He was heavily involved in life throughout his life and you can see he played a big part in shaping Michael into a man. You're not wrong about Gordy, but I still believe, at the time, Michael saw Quincy as the one to look up too. And vice versa.

Bottom line: Michael had it and suffered alone. And when it got worse, he chose to have all pigmentation of his skin removed. He didn't want people to feel sorry for him and his health so he kept silent. One of the reasons he didn't want victory tour releashed is that the videos of this tour are the only ones that clearly show vitiligo in his hands, chest and neck. Even in the amateur dvd that is out, you can clearly see it.

It took three producers working in three studios in one building to replace quincy. MJ would go from one both to another saying "you have no idea what they are cooking in there". The producers were Teddy Riley, Bill Bottrell, and Bruce Swedien. Teddy thought only 2 of the songs he produced would end up on the album but was surprised he got 7. Swedien got 5 and Bottrell 3 including the album's only hot 100 number 1 'Black or White". In the end Dangerous sold 30 million copies matching the Quincy produced album Bad which had 4 number 1 Hot 100 singles.
