Quilty: How to make your own quilt templates

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The world of quilting supplies is big, ever-growing, and often a little overwhelming. While Quilty is a big fan of gadgets and doo-hickies, we do understand that there are many ways to get a job done. In this episode of Quilty, Little Sister, Rebecca Fons returns to help Mary show how to make a template from scratch! Lots of quilt patterns call for special shapes, and after watching this episode, you'll know how to make your own from supplies you probably have at home already. You can DIY -- or "do-it-yourself" with a little help from the Fons girls. Enjoy!

I would use this method for curved templates, but straight-edged templates are better just made from paper, taped to the underside of a straight-edged quilting ruler and then use the acrylic ruler edge to cut from fabric with rotary cutter. Much more accurate! Thanks for posting this video, Fons sisters. :-)

You can make templates by using old X rays. I went by a local hospital asking for old X rays that they usually discard and received about a dozen to make templates. Also, I take typing paper, glue to the smooth side of sand paper and cut them out with dull scissors. The sand paper laid against the fabric will prevent the template from slipping.

I see some comments below complaining about "too much talking" but after watching it myself I disagreed. I thought it was just fine, it included all the information about tools one will need, and answers many questions that beginning sewists will come up with. A solid, helpful video.

you could trace the template onto the fabric, then lay down the ruler and cut with a rotary. Personally, I don't mind so much talking. I do mind cutting a template out of the middle of the plastic, or cutting the shape out of the middle of the fabric. That's something I taught my child not to do when she was about 5 years old.

This has been helpful. I have an old book that uses templates in the pattern. This is perfect now I have a simple way to make the templates. I was worried about card stock or thin cardboard templates lasting. TFS :-) !

Because most of the time you wouldn't have straight lines on specialty templates. They are usually circular or semi-circular in part. I'm sure if it's a smaller triangle like one that they made you could do that.

You would need a thicker acrylic ruler with your rotary cutter, that template plastic is not that durable.
