This was very helpful. I see so many videos telling me why I need a longarm, how to load, oil and clean a longarm, why I should choose one brand over another and quite a few of someone sailing over a section of quilt with their longarm BUT very very few showing HOW to longarm. I totally get that it takes lots and lots of practice to produce beautiful flowing stitches but watching some one actually quilt while they describe what and why and how is SO helpful. I have subscribed to your channel and will “like” your videos and check out your website. Thank you for taking the time to show others HOW. Very appreciated. I think I’ve narrowed my search to an APQS Lenni and am waiting for their Road Show June 16th which will have some great deals on machines!

Sew very pretty. I’m practicing this on my sit down machine. Could you share the dimensions of the block and circle sizes? I know each block size can vary but knowing the approximate ratio will be helpful. Your work is lovely and inspiring. I appreciate your teaching method of explaining how and why ; it works well with how my brain works.

Brenda Sierdsma, thank you for your kind comments. It made my day. I wish I could reference your questions and let you know, but I no longer have this piece. I usually like to make my spine half the size of the block. That is, if it’s a 10” block, my circle for the spine is about 5” diameter. That way, the inner feathers are about as big as the outer ones. If I vary at all, I go smaller on the spine circle because I think, visually, it’s better to have bigger outer feathers, rather than bigger inner ones. I hope this makes sense. It’s a great question and it deserves a solid answer!

Got my new longarm up and running and binging on tutorials to get ideas and tips on feathers. How long does it take to get relaxed to make this look so easy?

TraCy strobel, That’s a great question. Everybody is a bit different in the learning curve, and each person brings a different set of skills into the mix in order to long arm. There are a few things I can tell you that would help you to relax. First off, remember this is just the thread on fabric, and thread can always be removed. Second, think about the long arm as a car that you drive. Start with a gentle push or tug and slow down as you come into a point. Never rush into points. Try to drive the machine with the hand that you’re dominant with. For most people, it’s the hand that they write with. Concentrate on using your other hand to simply hold yourself steady, and use your primary hand to do the bulk of the driving. Third, don’t look exactly where the needle is. Look either a few inches ahead of where you were going, or even to the point that you’re trying to get to. You’d be surprised how changing your perspective allows you to be more accurate. Have fun with your long arm, and don’t let yourself get frustrated. We all have to start somewhere, and we have all created ugly, cruddy looking things in the beginning.

The Threadworks Factory was just thinking about what you said about using your dominate hand! That may be my issue with control because im left handed and the start/stop is on the right so i tend to lead with that hand... so no wonder i dont have the control. I might as well be using my feet! Lol

TraCy strobel that’s exactly my issue as well! I’m left handed and any time I feel like my quilting is off, that’s why. Give it a try at concentrating that your left hand has the right to dominantly drive and you may meet with better success.
