Great suggestions and info. A 4th alternative is camping. Maybe not tent camping but so many have travel trailers and motor homes. Just pack light so you have room for all those goodies you’re going to bring home😊
I have a fourth alternative that worked for us in Austin and Savannah - we book a room at a motel chain like La Quinta where our dog is welcome (yes, my husband and our dog come along on the road trip) and Jeff drops me off in the morning and picks me up in the evening. Cost is about 1/3 of the official hotels and we don't mind driving for 15 minutes or so.
