Greetings Cecelia, thank you so much for these great tips. I found them on Pinterest and then came over to my KZread App to view your channel and add it to my subscriptions.. my favorite tip you had was on applying glue to the curly cues .I was just dealing with some of those tornado issues this morning on a piece I was working on. Also it was a nice affirmation to see the glue that you use. In addition to your tip about the shot glass I also cut a sponge into a small triangle dampen it and put the sharp tip down .I then put a couple of sewing pins with the round head on them so that I can open up my Glue bottle tip occasionally. I use a plastic tub lid for things like a glue work surface and a spreader. Some tub lids also have a matte side to them.

Thank you Cecelia for these great tips. I have just found out that even tho Ontario is starting to open up, I will not be working until September... Sooo new craft to try and master. I am sure a lot of people have taken to quilling in the "lock down" as it is a fun way to keep your hands busy making coils while binge watching. As someone who could never do needlework, quilling was calling my name. You gluing tips are pure gold. It looks so easy to use that little precision glue bottle, but so frustrating as it clogs. Keep making those videos! Also... Saw your store on Etsy... Love, love, love the succulent cards. Will definitely be ordering to tackle when my skills are up to it!

Hi Sandra, that's great I was able to give you a proactive way to spend your lock down time. It's kind of a toss up for me, since I really enjoy focusing on my craft table. I keep my fine tip bottle unclogged by inserting a stainless steel pin into the nozzle. If it's not stainless steel, the moisture from the glue will rust inside the nozzle. Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement! I have many free resources and templates for new quillers on my blog. Just remember that each project to do will keep adding to your skills - don't give up!

I do love your videos! I have learned so much from them. Especially about using glue and making outlines to be filled in! Please keep up the good work and thank you so much for sharing.

Unfortunately I don’t know of any easy way to remove glue that is on your work surface without damaging it. That’s why all my tips are aimed at avoiding glue touching the surface as much as possible. Even a small brushing of it can leave a noticeable mark.

Hello! My name is also Cecilia. I loved this video and it has rekindled my interest to pick up quilling again. A trick that I use when confronted with a stopped up nozzle is to soak the cap in very hot water. The heat thins the glue and frees up the blockage.

Amazing video! The thing I found most helpful was you making the “mistakes” and showing how to correct/undo them. Most videos I’ve seen simply tell you what they do, and it’s not very helpful to me-I’m often confused by parts of what they’re trying to explain. I’m very new to quilling and I hadn’t ever seen the glue spreading tips or the way you removed your paper.

I like "Art Glitter Glue". It is the same consistency as Alenes Tacky Glue but does not leave the shine when dry. I have been using it for years. I first discovered it watching MayMayMadeIt videos. I will need to add plastic cards to my craft kit. I have been using post-it notes as suggested by Quilled Creations videos. I am addicted to these craft videos on KZread as they have taught me so much and have advanced my skills.

Fascinating! A new glue for me to explore!!! Thank you for sharing that Rochelle. I watched her video about it and I'm itching to try it out. It's going to take me a long time to finish my bottle of Aleene's, but it's sitting in my shopping cart now - ahem... all in the name of research, of course. Post-it notes work too, but with plastic cards, I don't have any waste at all. THANK YOU for totally making my day with your kind words!!!

A should try ...here some cereals come in bags that are silver inside... when cut into strips give some work a really pretty shine.. although harder to glue down they can be really worth the work

Hi there, thank you for sharing your tips. I was wondering how you deal with glue smears on black board? It is so difficult to put the pieces correctly the first time and then the shiny smears are extremely visible on black.

Hi Annelie, it can definitely be a challenge to apply your pieces correctly the first time, which results in glue marks on your surface. Obviously smaller shapes with non-moving parts are easiest, like a marquise or simple coil. I find S-scrolls with long arcing parts which have no defined outer shapes are the hardest. It's almost like you need 8 arms like an octopus! To answer your question, unfortunately, there isn't a way to remove the glue smears from your surface and it's especially noticeable on a black board. The best way to minimize it is to apply your shape with great care the first time. Here's how I do that: When I'm dealing with jiggly pieces, I sometimes use two tweezers, so one hand applies one end first, while the 2nd hand stays up in the air, keeping the other end away from my surface. Then I can slowly apply the rest. Another way is to only apply glue on one half of my piece, then apply. Then lift the remaining half, dip in glue (from your thin plastic card) and then apply the last half to your surface. This was a great question, and maybe one day I'll make another video showing the above - thanks for asking Annelie! I hope my tips help you and please keep asking more questions! I am self taught at many different arts and crafts over the years. When I acquire a new interest I scourge the internet for every tidbit i can find about it. I spend hours researching tools to buy/supplies and reviews. I find every free tutorial or blog i can about it online. Then i head over to youtube to watch 5 different videos of the same step, just so I know all the available techniques people have invented. I picked up paper quilling about 8 years ago. I've picked it up for a few projects here and there through the years. There are two things that go wrong which discourage me. First is multiple layer swirls. The swirl looks great but the end where it's all glued together never ever curls right and doesn't look smooth. The second are these exact glue issues. I though these problems weren't even problems because no information to fix them is out there. I figured it's just one of the more difficult parts of the craft we have to live with! I almost passed by this video tutorial. When you have been around a craft for a few years all those videos on a subject "10 beginner must knows" etc are all the same. You hear the same tips over and over. You hear the same solutions over and over. I have no idea why I clicked on this video that i automatically assumed i'd already heard some version of but i'm so elated that I did. I just junked a project i'd spent quite a few hours on because of glue issues. I can't imagine how much heartache frustration and and wasted time you saved me! And you've inspired me to write my first you tube comment ever. Maybe I'll actually accomplish more project without having to start them over from scratch! I can't believe i've never heard this info in all the tons of sites i've visited and videos i've watched. You are the queen of Paper! I subscribed and now i'll head over and see what other magical knowledge you posses.

I have never quilled before, but I have tools, paper, and patterns coming today. I am excited. My tip for glue - any craft glue: is to use Vaseline or petroleum jelly on the threads of your glue bottle so the lids don't stick when you pour out glue. Something I always do with glue and Mod Podge.

Welcome to quilling Debbee! Oh I've never tried using that before. I don't really have the problem of my lids sticking - perhaps because I do regularly clean the thread before capping the lid back on. Have fun quilling!

I see doing this quilling I will need to be very careful and keep the little bottle needs to be cleaned. Do you put a straight pin in the tiny bottles to keep it clear?

@@dlwcrazyblondeone Yes, I use a map pin which just happened to be in my drawers at the time. I had no idea it would work so well for me but I didn't link the pin that came with the bottle. It was very thin and it got bent easily. I didn't know some pins can rust easily, but it's never happened with my map pin yet and I've used that for over a decade.

Oh the bottle didn't come with a pin? Hmm, I wonder how they expect it not to dry out then. Which brand did you buy, if you don't mind my asking? I'm always curious what's out there, since I have only just bought things around my local stores. Plus, so many people ask me what I'd recommend, and since I haven't bought much, I just don't know what to say! 🤔

Your video is excellent... How I wish I would have seen it before... I have a question is there anything u can do to remove the extra glue that reflects on the finished work. Thank you in advance

Unfortunately, it's quite difficult to remove glue that is already stuck to your work surface because it's likely bonded to the paper fibers already. That's why I simply try my best to avoid letting it show in the first place. Good luck!

Hello! I was at a quilling workshop and we made a picture with flowers. at the end we coated it with varnish. I didn't like it the most, because I thought it looked better without the varnish. Can you tell me if this is really necessary or not. Thank you very much for the answer and of course for all the videos in which you nicely guide beginners through the initial problems.

This is amazing. Thank you! I noticed your glue bottle has a different tip on it that reminds me of a mechanical pencil. Did you buy it this way or make it? I hate the tip these bottles normally use as they come loose.

Thank you Katie - I'm glad my tutorials are helpful. I bought my glue bottle over a decade ago at Michaels in Canada, but have never seen it since. Oh that's awful to hear the tip comes loose. Which brand did you buy that came loose?

A friend introduced me a few months ago to the wonderful world of Pinterest and how I can make my own lists. We came across the art of quilling. I have a quilled (is that a proper term?) card a dear friend gave me with a hummingbird, since I am wild about that lovely bird, with a flower. Since seeing thatcard I did not know the name of the art nor anything about it. Today I received first two Quilling books and got on KZread to see what I could find. I watched a 3 minute vid by another lady and then I saw this one. I am excited to see other videos and learn how to avoid beginner mistakes. I know I will have a learning curve but just watching your gives me confidence I can do this. I am not a novice at crafting so I know I can make beautiful pictures. I just subscribed to your channel. I want to find out about quilling tools, paper and cut my own paper if it is fairly easy to do. Does it save money to cut my own?

Although you can save money by cutting your own strips, conventional quilling paper is quite inexpensive, so you'd save time by buying it. However, I have an electric cutting machine (Silhouette SD, and now a Cricut Explore), so it's easier to cut by hand. I prefer to cut my own because I want thicker paper. I found the video helpful, as I do all your video. I have tried making them really loosely from the beginning but that doesn't often make much of a difference. Other times I have no problem. I'll try rewinding with my fingers.@@PaperZenCeceliaLouie

Just wondering ... Have you ever tried using clear acrylic nail polish for the "glu"? Do you think that would work out and hold the project together in the long-run? Thanks for any info.

No, I've never tried using nail polish instead of glue - I guess because glue is cheaper than nail polish, and I don't like the fumes from nail polish. All the different brands of glue I've used throughout the years have lasted in my quilling, so I'm pretty happy using glue.

My tip is to let the glue dry for afew seconds before apply it on the surface, the strips will stick easly , thank you sooo much that was very helpful

I am new to quilling and wondered if you or anyone on here could help me on what is the best type of glue to use. I just tried one of my glues I had on hand at home here. It is called "The Rubber Café Scrap Happy Sheer Glue" this is for scrapbooking and card making, but it is definitely showing under my quilling pieces. I tried applying with a toothpick (lightly), then tried the dipping method (NOT a good idea! LOL!), I also tried applying from the bottle itself with a very light squeeze of glue ( and sometimes not so light! Again...., I am just a beginner). But I definitely must be not doing this correctly as even though it dries clear....., it doesn't look real professional. I sure am open to learning and look forward to any input you all can offer! I love the look of the quilled flowers and would really like to add this to my crafting projects! Thank you!

Welcome to the world of quilling Colleen! I hope you have as much enjoyment from quilling as I do. My favorite glue is Aleene's Original Tacky Glue (Amazon Affiliate Link: amzn.to/2i9qA9u) I would definitely suggest smearing the glue puddle as I show in my video to make it thinner before dipping. This will make the dipped edges extremely shallow and won't show as much on your work surface. Hope that helps you! Cecelia

Dear cecelia, My precious quilling teacher! I cannot thank you enough for this valuable information. Can I get your opinion on a problem I have encountered? While applying glue to the quilling strips, unavoidably, too much glue remains on the strips, and these excess glue foams from the edges of the strips on the background paper. Hi Mehmet, unfortunately after the glue has dried it’s very hard to remove. I suggest simply using less glue before gluing your strip to the surface, as I show by smearing the glue puddle flatter.

I place the strip on its edge and use the flat table surface to help me line it up before I attach the ends.

Hi MF, I am using Aleene's Tacky Glue which comes with a nozzle. I pour from the nozzle into my fine tip glue bottle because the nozzle fits inside, so there is zero chance of me spilling a drop. Since my fine tip bottle is so small, it doesn't take too long to fill and it's not worth the mess. Are you taking the nozzle off your larger glue bottle?

may i know what is the paper or board that the quilling art are glued onto? and at time 7:16 what are those things that you holding i dont understand them.. so tacky glue are the glue that you are using? thank

I am using 80 lb card stock. It's nothing special, just something thick is enough to prevent warping. At 7:16, I am showing a Fine Tip Glue Bottle (Amazon Affiliate link): amzn.to/2BbfZ8L I use that to apply a very tiny dot of glue on my quilling strip coils to glue them down. I store the bottle of glue upside down in a shot glass with a damp tissue at the bottom. This prevents the glue from drying in the nozzle. Yes, I like using Aleene's Tacky Glue.
