Quick way to diagnose the generator
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
If your generator has no power here is an easy way to test the stator. You don’t need to remove it from the engine to test it.

I'm a charter boat captain I gotta try your technique. I'm gonna hand my next customer from Arkansas fishing real and say alright tighten up the drag to about 15 pounds free sphool when u get ate dont jack m just come tite n dont Twist your line and realagainst the drag. Okay you got it and make sure. You leave me at least ten feet so I could stick him and sling him in the box... They should know all those terms ahead of time right

What are the two pairs of wires in the four pin plug and how do you tell them apart? My avr has a different plug from the generator but does suit its specs. I just need to match the sense and excite connections on the generator to the avr

I would really consider using an AVR that is similar to your original. The pin consists of two pairs of wires. You should have continuity between each pair. If you have continuity between more than 2 then there is a problem. That’s how you tell them apart.

@@10minutefix should every couple have the same reading. For me one is giving me 3.5 and the other 0.4

@mouadprince3038 not necessarily a value bit should beep. If it does then there is continuity and they are good.

Great videos as always!!! Quick question, I have a 2400 watt generator, starts up fine and runs. Power output 120v (North America), but it outputs 120v at the outlet, then fades out, then back on, then fades out… keeps doing this the whole time it’s running. What could that be? I ordered a new AVR, and still not any better. Thanks for your help

First of all, thanks for watching but you can’t just throw parts at it and hope it works. Checking at the outlet is the last place to check. Maybe the brushes are very worn, the breaker is going out, there might be a loose connection at the stator or something else. Check my other videos on how to diagnose other parts of the generator. Hope this helps.

I am going to make a video on diagnosing a generator from beginning to end.

@@10minutefix thanks, I was told by a tech it was likely AVR. That’s why I attempted that. Have you seen this kind of situation before? I literally just watched every single one of your videos, and liked 👍🏻 each one. From what Ive gathered while looking into this issue, is breaker works or the dont, brushes same thing. It’s odd that the 120v pulses on and off non stop. Trying to pin point why
@10minutefix

@LA-TEEZI you have to look at the brushes and test the breaker. I have a video on that. You also have to follow the procedures on this video. Also, you need to see if there is power from the stator and if it is doing the same thing. Keep watch for the new video. It might well be the avr but don’t guess.

is that stator off a harbor freight generator? it looks just like the one I'm messing with. I have open circuit on both sides of the AVR plug, but if I touch the two power wires together I get continuity through it.

The stator is not from harbor freight but they are all very similar. The power wires you mention, which ones are they? Your stator should have 4 wires if it’s rated for 220 volts. Each set of wires should have continuity but if they don’t then the stator is bad.

Thank you for the reply! It does have the 4 wires(red, black, and two whites), and there is proper resistance on both legs. where I get no resistance is the AVR plug(also four wires- 2 blue, a grey, and a white). but if I touch the red and black wires together, there IS resistance on both sides of the AVR plug. @@10minutefix

@bradleywesterford3587 forget about touching the two wires together. That doesn’t mean anything. If you follow the test for the AVR plug and you see no continuity at all then the stator is bad.

Cool thank you, I figured as much. Do you happen to know what part of the stator fails in this situation? Broken wire somewhere or something like that? There are no burned/melted sections, black wires, etc. Visually, everything looks to be in good shape. Just asking for my own knowledge, as I don't have much experience dealing with electric motors/generators. This was a Predator 4000 I bought a few years ago, but never used, and it never produced power when I did go to use it. Could have been bad from the factory. Should have tested it when I bought it. Thanks again for the responses! @@10minutefix

@@bradleywesterford3587 these are just wires winding around pieces of metal. You just tested the wires because that’s where the power flows from. Nothing more to it. If there is a break in the wire then you get no continuity. If any of the tests I described in the video fail then a new stator is needed. A predator 4000 is not worth repairing. The stator is probably just as much as the generator.
