Quick Tips | How to Figure out Distance in Perspective

There is an artist trick to figuring out how fast an object disappears into space and in this video we are going to explore that trick.
Video links where I explain these tips a lot slower:

    fir the thick ness of other poles just draw the ref perspective line to the VP, Then just pull the horizontal line from each pole untill it touches the ref line. that will be faster. but ya the tech showed here can be helpful for other details. thanks fir the video. 🤟👌

    I see a two problem with this approach, the accuracy relys on the artist eye which means they could look off and the the width of the poles could be uneven. Dont have a solution for the first (though I have an idea) but can fix the second. To fix the accuracy of the width of all poles, draw the first pole in and from the top width (2B) and base width, draw a line to the vanishing point. This gives you the width of all other poles and in effect creating a giant wall. You then just just draw a horizontal line for each of the poles from the top of each and do copy that for the base of them and remove the excess lines and your done.

    It took me a few reads to understand what you were talking about but I think I understand. Are you referring to determining the width of the poles after you stop seeing a gap of space between them since they have disappeared so far into the perspective/distance?

  • @DemonicBloke

    @@joshpapaleo2602 No, I was referring to all pole widths. Since every pole width will be different the further away it gets, it gets harder to draw correctly. Adding the extra line from 2B to the vanishing point achieves that job simpler than adding a 2nd set of zig zags. Hope thats a little clearer.

    for post thickness, could you just draw a guideline from 1B to the vanishing point?

    How do you determine the perspective between two totally different objects for eg. A church in the distant background and a person walking in the foreground ? Thank you for this - was great!

  • @joshpapaleo2602

    @joshpapaleo2602

    That's a great question! (This will get wordy so I apologize in advance lol) What I would do is determine the size of something on the church, to use your example, in relation to the size of the person. So for instance let's say in this case the church door is maybe 2-3 heads higher than your person, draw that door (lightly if working traditionally!!) as if the person was right in front of it and then use your vanishing point draw a line from the top of the door and bottom going back in space to however far in the distance you would like it to be. Now you have the size of the door in the distance determined and you can build the exterior of the church around it. You could also work this in reverse and draw a church in the distance, draw a figure by the door, and then draw the lines coming forward in space to determine the person's size. I'll definitely add this to my list of future video ideas to give you a visual but hopefully, this helps. Thanks so much for watching!

    I don't understand the purpose of "numbering 1A, 2A, draw the thickness of the first pole and call that 1B, then draw a line from 1B over to the yadda yadda yadda" Couldn't you just.. draw the thickness, let's call the point 1B. Project 1B back to the vanishing point. Now for each pole, draw a horizontal line from the tip of the pole until it interesects the 1B projected line. Done. The lines projected from 1A and 1B to the vanishing point will be parallel, hence they will be equidistant all the way in the distance, so the thickness of the pole will be consistent and correctly foreshortened. It's the same concept that lets you draw the corrected foreshortened height for the poles! Sorry if I sound harsh, I don't want to bash on you: the duplication trick you used for determining the correct distance between the poles is very neat

    Someone left a comment similar to this. It's hard to visualize what you guys are saying through text but I like the idea of making a follow-up video where I follow along with your instructions and see if I like it better. I think with art, much like a lot of things in life, there are a hundred different ways to accomplish a task that will eventually lead to the same result but I'm all about working smarter not harder so thanks for the advice!
