For every 4' you're going up in rise, go 1' from the wall. For example if you're going up a 20' roof the base of the ladder should be 5' from the wall.

I really don’t think that first angle was “too steep”. Especially on a surface like sandy tile, I’d rather be too steep than too shallow.

I’ve been using ladders for 40 years. The best method to a proper angle is to align the top, flat part of the wrong (where your foot rests) parallel to the ground if the ground is flat. If the ground or floor is angled, other measures are probably needed.

I wont put my ladders directly on any smooth hard surface , even if you do every thing right theres a chance it can slide, or even if you just THINK it can it will mess with your brain. I keep a rubberized welcome mat with me for those occasions . Worst case I'll find something to tie off to . Especially indoors on a shiny wood floor , that's my least favorite

As a gutter cleaner who sets up 28ft extension ladders all day, I’d never set my 28 up the way he claims is “correct” in the video. On a slick concrete, paver, or wooden deck, I’d be afraid of the base kicking out on me. I’d rather keep my ladder a bit more steep to be safe on a smooth surface like this. Maybe with someone footing the ladder I’d consider this angle but it just doesn’t even seem worth it to me. I’d also have those cleats upright too & when to the top I’d secure the ladder with a bungie cord to the gutter clips.

I like the bungie cord tip also. Thanks!

I think it was fine the way it was in the beginning 🧐

Best is to have the flats of the steps level and you will be fine.

The #1 cause of ladder accidents is the angle being too shallow and the base of the ladder sliding out. This happens all the time. Conversely, the only scenario where too steep is unsafe is when you’re a firefighter and you’re bailing out of a building head first, or you’re trying to bring out a victim. And in each of those cases someone should be footing the ladder. For construction, it’s always safer to set up the ladder “too steep”. The real test for setting up a ladder is to make it as steep as possible such that you can still stand on the first rung without it tipping over backward. If you can stand on the first rung without tipping, then the ladder is never going to tip when you’re higher up, because your weight will be closer to the building than when you’re on the first rung.

i’m not so sure about the whole, “if you’re fine on the first rung you’ll be fine the rest of the way up because you’ll be closer to the building”

@@duhduu6658 That idea applies specifically to the particular fear of the ladder being “too vertical” and tipping over backward. It does not apply to the issue of the base sliding out. In fact, the farther you get up the ladder, the more likely it is that the base might slide out due to deflection of the beams and (potential) subtle changes in the foot contact pressure (depending on the type of feet used on the ladder). (This is also why the problem of the base sliding out is so pernicious - because you might be fine on the first rung, but as you get up higher the small deflections and oscillations in the beams can be enough to cause the feet of the ladder to lose friction. Thus, you *do not* want to err on the side of “too shallow”.)

+Nothumbs12 Gaming That’s true, but in general arms are proportionate to the body. Similar to how most body parts are proportionate to each other. However there are always exceptions.
