    That’s why i use less oderless paints and I’m completely also using safflower oils and walnut oils for my paints . Other paints like golden paints and some oil paint that other people use cause bad cancer and it will kill you. Some paint brands do not really tell you if it’s ok to use in the discriptions in stores and Amazon online but sennelier paints tell you and it’s a lot a lot safer. It says ap it says safflower oil and no warnings .

    Saying that oil paint is just oil and pigment is true, but also will instill people with a false sense it safety. Cobalt, cadmium, and lead are definitely dangerous.

    I’m always trying to strike the balance between busting some of the myths that oils are more toxic, helping inform & being clear about the safety precautions. Your’e right those pigments are harmful - especially lead! (Although lead is very difficult to buy without being given clear warnings & has fallen out of use except with some artists) I always say to check the warning labels on your paints for that reason. My research suggests that cadmium & cobalt are only harmful if ingested but that is still important to be aware of so thanks for highlighting this :)

    @dorisroseart, oil paints are widely known to be one of the most toxic and dangerous options available, second only perhaps to aerosol paints. This is not a myth, but a well-established fact. While there are non-toxic alternatives available, many people are not aware of them. So I commend you for spreading knowledge about these options. As you pointed out, oil paints can be especially dangerous if ingested. Your video highlights the misconception that oil paints are safe because they are made from " just oil and pigment." This misconception and its implied safety can lead people to handle oil paints without taking proper precautions, such as washing their hands thoroughly before eating or keeping the paints away from young children. As a content creator, your words and actions possess the power to shape the opinions, beliefs, and even behaviors of your audience. However, let's make sure we don't inadvertently inspire people to consume oil paints along with your content. After all, while oil paints may make for a vivid color palette, they are hardly a nutritious or advisable snack.

    My research does not support that they are toxic or harmful to a painter’s health if that painter is educated & mindful of studio safety & the additives they use (mediums and solvents). That’s what I aim to do in my videos to dismantle fears & myths that prevent ppl from trying oils. If you know of any academic articles, papers, books or other resources that offer a different perspective please let me know I’d be happy to check it out.

    I agree with you that it’s important to be clear that oils should not be ingested & that safety precautions in the studio (such as not eating & using gloves to handle paint) are advised. I have other videos which detail these safety concerns but one of the issues with short-form-video is that it’s hard to put all connected information into one video though I always try my best to add context (maybe I’ll put together a compilation vid). so I appreciate viewers like you who highlight these things in the comments for people wanting a fuller picture.

    As someone who uses turps a lot for painting don’t spill it on yourself… split it on my trousers during an art exam… did my best wash it out but still ended up with a massive turps burn. It’s fine if you get it on your skin for a short while, just wash it off. (I had those trousers on for like 5 hours). I was fine, the skin was just irritated and after a week I peeled off a massive sheet of dead skin. Basically gave myself a diy chemical peel 😅.

    I’ve not tried that solvent. There may be a way for you to compare the stregnth of eco-house & gamblin to see which is milder. I use gamblin which has a good reputation for being safe but it’s still a mild mineral spirit. If you want to you could go solvent free by using safflower or linseed oil to clean your brushes instead. Although if you do that you still have to watch how you throw out rags or paper towels that you get really oily as it can be a fire hazard.

  • @dorisroseart

    I’d be careful using these oils to clean brushes as they are non-drying oils. I have heard of people using them to clean brushes (I don’t know myself if they are effective) but you would have to be very careful to remove the oil with soap & water afterwards so that there is no residue to interact with your painting. The oils used in oil painting mediums are drying oils. Id recommend you use one of these drying oils eg. linseed, safflower, walnut, flax, or poppy oil instead - some may be available at a local grocery store. But you can also try a vegetable oil from the grocery store which isn’t suitable as a painting medium but may be a more appropriate brush cleaning oil (again before mild soap). Hope this helps :)

    @@Zirwoahsmall tubes of good quality paint - do not buy “cheap, basic paint” those have less pigments and more filler, it will only discourage you from painting altogether making it trickier to get the results you want and being lest intense in colour. You can buy small sets of paints or start with 3 primary colours + white, umber and ultramarine - from those 6 you can make most colours, including black, this way you can learn colour mixing, values and paint applications while handling quality material. To make things easier you can go for water soluble oils - safer to use and easier to clean option, just do not use water as your medium despite anyone’s advice. Consider to ‘test out right and wrong’ before attempting a more elaborate paintings, where you use ‘dry paint’ only (or is fine to do so, experience the difference and it’s behaviour on canvas) in one small area, in another try water as medium (water soluble oils only)- just to see the results, then try different mediums or test one of your choice (you don’t need more than one), learn and apply the rules: 'fat over lean', 'thick over thin'/‘opaque over transparent’, 'slow-drying over fast-drying', ‘light on dark’, (if you’re visual or practical learner consider testing ‘correct vs incorrect ‘ to actually see and learn the difference first hand as the experience of it helps to remember the rule). For all oil paints you’ll need a mixing medium like walnut or linseed oil (slows drying so you have more time to work with the paint) or/and liquin (speeds up the drying)-those will depend on your technique and time you want to work with (shading vs applying layers etc). No cooking oils please. Don’t feel like you’re supposed to choose lower/“beginner”/student quality just because you’re starting your creative journey. You want good quality in order to have good experience. You also don’t have to buy half of the art store to start, one-three different brushes is enough and will allow you to learn more about using them, also learning different types of bristles and how they wear-I say “we only use one brush at a time”, thus I prefer one good quality brush than a “all in one” pack. It’s the personal preference that will tell you what you need and then you will know what else you need to get to create what you desire. Smaller brushes for smaller surfaces is a good and safe start, as your experience grows with the canvas size you can get bigger brush but the small one will always come in handy for any detailing.. *Aways* care for your brushes-don’t break bristles and always clean your brushes after you’re done painting; for water soluble oils, acrylics and watercolours you can get special artist soap (the cheaper ones are good too) from art shop but regular soap can be a substitute. Remember to leave dry brushes with bristles up while wet ones - flat or hanging down, you for wanted travelling up the brush. Good brush won’t last if it’s not looked after and you want to have it in excellent shape, ready for painting. Consider starting with canvas sheets or pads (even high GSM paper)rather than expensive canvas, as a ‘practice ground’ and once you get the feel like you know what you’re doing and how things work, it’s time to switch to canvas. It’s not a rule, rather personal preference to help make most progress with less expenses. Instead of investing in expensive easel you can buy small workstation to place on desk or table, this way you can save money ..to buy more quality paint. Instead of ‘flammable cleaning rags’ consider kitchen or toilet roll.. As a guide you can sign up for online classes or courses,they don’t have to be expensive, they need to have the basics and guidance. From there it’s only practice, practice, practice. Consider painting something simple yet challenging and then paint the same thing again, and again… you’ll learn a lot and have quick comparison of your progress which will be motivating and encouraging. *Expect* making mistakes-this is where you learn the most! Allow time for your painting and do not rush.. it can be a great patience training for some.. but it should never feel like a punishment or frustration - if it doesn’t feel like fun=stop, take a break, relax.. do not underestimate relaxing your eyes by allowing it to focus on something different after painting for longer-you can lose the ability to see the overall results. These are my 15 cents.. what are Yours? 😊 *Have fun creating!*

    If you find the texture of oil paint too sticky & dry you can use an oil medium (linseed, liquin, walnut, safflower etc) to improve the flow. I havnt had an issue with brush cleaning - I first break down the oil paint in the brush in a jar of mineral spirits (gamsol) then I use mild brush cleaning soap and warm water to finish cleaning, then I reshape the brush with my fingers before they dry to maintain the shape.

  • @dorisroseart

    @dorisroseart

    Turpentine is a type of solvent. Solvent just refers to anything that breaks down paint. For most types of paint, eg. Acrylic, the solvent is just water but oil paints can’t be broken down in water so the solvent is turpentine or a mineral spirit of some kind like Gamsol.
