    Thank you so much Dianne. This was helpful. Color harmony (in addition to brush strokes) come across so beautifully in your paintings. I could look at your gallery paintings all day. You are a treasure chest of knowledge and I want to thank you for your generosity in sharing this. You have touched so many people! I can hardly wait for your mini lessons and live lessons to start up. In the meantime, I think this has encouraged me to revisit Series 4 and 6 of your DVD lessons! Thanks again!

    Thank you so much Dianne, this was such a helpful teaching. At last colour mixing is starting to seem a little less daunting, thanks to you. You give us a way in. I love this way of using studies in a structured way to learn how to explore and understand the way colours can work and how to approach a scene before painting. More of these, please!

    Thank you (again). I think I'm growing convinced that nature showers us with so much detail that our brains filter most of it out and trying to capture it all in a painting is impossible. Today's demo, especially as you moved into the foreground, is more evidence that temperature and value are the most critical aspects of a painting that makes it easy on the eye and communicates clearly. If I'm correct I would go farther and say that is what makes a pleasurable abstract painting. I am interested in your thoughts on successful abstract painting.

  • @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    5 жыл бұрын

    John, the only difference between abstract and realistic painting is that abstract is less about imagery (some with no imagery at all) and more about either design, expressing a visual idea, the material itself, etc, whereas realistic painting focuses more on the imagery. Just like a good piece of music, a good painting is a good painting because of how it is composed and it's maker's craft.

    I always hesitate to explain another artist's process, but using broken colors like his is a method of allowing the eye to mix the colors by of placing small strokes side by side rather than mixing them with the brush or on the palette. The pointillists capitalized on this using dots of color.

    Back again with a question. Would you ever suggest adding another colour to the complementary palette just to give the painting a bit of punch, for example in the grass? If so, what colour would be best?

  • @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    5 жыл бұрын

    To keep the palette complimentary, we stay within the hue range of the complements. On this expanded complimentary palette, I pushed the blues towards violet and green, but stayed within the blue range. You could further expand this one by pushing the orange towards red and towards yellow, but not too much or it becomes another kind of palette.

  • @HasanEtr
    @HasanEtr Жыл бұрын

    Miss Mize could you please tell us whether or not we should add a little bit complimentary colors for the sky colors? If or if not so what's the reason or idea behind it? As far as l understand from your lectures, we always need to add even small amount of complementary colors for each object for realistic way of painting. Thanks in advance. 🙏🙏😌

  • @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    Hasan, the sky color on a clear day appears to be highly saturated, but it varies in hue and in value, depending upon where you are looking. I don't use formulas, as you probably know, but since many areas of a clear sky are in the greenish-blue hue, I usually add a tiny bit of red violet which tempers the green in the blue.

    Hi Dianne, if I create a new hue (in this case, green) by mixing the blue and orange, does it break the limited palette? Because right now we have blue, orange, and green in the palette.

  • @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    5 жыл бұрын

    Actually what I have on the palette is blue and orange. The two blues and just a broader ranger of blue. Thalo blue leans towards green, but it's still blue. That's why I call it an expanded limited complimentary palette. We don't break the complimentary part unless we add a green to the palette. In that case, it would still be a limited palette, but a different kind. As long as the colors on the palette are compliments, it remains a limited complementary palette no matter what mixtures we make from it.

    Hello. New here. Is it possible to do a short video on some of the best acrylic paint colors for flowers and roses? I would like to use a palette with less than 10 colors that i can use to mix multiple colors (vs buying 100 colors). Any tips would be really appreciated :) I literally see 0 videos for "best acrylic palette for flowers and roses" on youtube

  • @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    @IntheStudioArtInstruction

    I haven't used acrylics for several years, but I do know that color choices for acrylics and oils are the same even though some of the tube names differ somewhat. Since roses and other flowers come in such a wide range of colors, and since those colors will vary depending upon how they are lit or to the degree they are in shadow, mixing is the key to getting those variations anyway. I suggest you try the colors Richard Schmid uses on his palette found here: www.richardschmid.com/Articles.asp?ID=253 . I suggest this because you need a range of highly saturated primary and secondary colors.

    What you quote is the PROOF you are misunderstanding the use of « complimentary » with means « free », « admiring », « saying nice things », etc., and has NOTHING to do with colors. The word to use is COMPLEMENTARY with means « related to » « mutually supplying each other's lack ». Don't take my word for it, look into the Webster : « COMPLEMENTARY : relating to or constituting one of a pair of contrasting colors that produce a neutral color when combined in suitable proportions ». www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/complementary
