Quick Drive: Manual 2019 Mazda3 - The Lightest and Most Fun!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I go for a short drive in the manual transmission version of the all-new 2019 Mazda3. This is the front wheel drive hatchback in Premium trim, which is the only model and trim that offers the manual. Even after just a short drive it's clear to me that the lighter weight of this model, combined with the lighter steering and easy-to-use manual is the one enthusiasts will enjoy most. What do you think of it? Thanks to Mazda for the opportunity!

Now make it available in more than one body style and one trim or you are guaranteeing its demise like with your Mazda 6 and Hondas accord Sure it will make up only 5% or so but let it grow slowly as demand warrants and give it newer manual features like rev matching launch control no lift throttle Toyotas cut off prevention tech adjustable engage point and aluminum pedals Add manual combo is a must and a poor man's golf r only better looking and equipped with a better interior

@Gorgon Phone 0- 60 about 7 seconds is slightly slower than an si by half second and about 1.5 seconds slower to the gti It needs that turbo for a really good time and some mods Interior exterior attention to detail is good though Just needs power badly and more manual trims

@Gorgon Phone I agree I am confident it will get the 250hp 2.5 liter turbo within 2 years Next year will be the x engine about the same power better economy than the turbo. I would be interested in something that can compete with the gti for sure but at very least the civic si at these near and over $30000 prices You can get both the gti and so with current deals at $22 and $24k pretty well equipped with much better performance but no where near the attention to detail and interior refinement or exterior looks. Awd is good for a golf r competitor for like 10k less if they offered a turbo add manual for like 30k

i bought this vehicle a month ago; i absolutely love it. the gear box has short throws, and it drives so good. if you turn off the traction control you really feel the pull. it has a low growl on the exhaust when you’re accelerating especially on 1st and 2nd gear. it’s such an awesome vehicle!! get it, folks! if Mazda produced the AWD in 6 speed manual, that’d be colossal. nonetheless, good job #Mazda!

Hey there T.K. I still have it, and i really like the car. like i stated before, i would have preferred the AWD turbo but they didn’t have one there; i was approved fast and the deal was a bit good to pass; i can’t complain. the manual transmission is great, with short throws, and smooth shifting. i bought it shorter but wider tires; better grip, but slightly lower than before, yet, it still drives well. i’d recommend a Mazda and preferably an AWD. If they had an AWD mazda3 manual transmission, i’d prefer it. but this front wheel drive manual is fun to drive. its fuel efficiency is good too

In regards to some people wanting a turbo for this car. Mazdas have always been about balanced power and handling. The unique thing about Mazdas is the ability to carry momentum through the corners due to the superior handling. One has to refrain from using the brakes and trust the handling. I see lots of people on the road who over use the brakes, loose their momentum, then try and recoup by jumping on the gas, and then complain it's under powered. On my 2017 3 GT with the 2.5, the power kicks in @ 2,800 RPM and really tops out @ 4,500 RPM. I have a manual though, so I have the ability to place the revs where they perform best. This all being said, a turbo would wake it up for sure, but add to the complexity, cost, and introduce potential reliability issues. But would definitely set it apart from the pack. The Honda Accord comes with two turbo engine options, and with a stick. But is also a larger vehicle.

I've owned 2 Mazda3s, currently a 2016 GT manual hatch. An AWD manual would have been nice, but I suspect they excluded it to keep cost down. More and more brands are only offering manuals on lower trims, which sucks, but at least some are still offering them. I'm not sure this redesign is worth upgrading to from a 2016 since it's the same engine, but I do like what they've done with the styling, inside and out. It looks even more upscale than my 2016.

Thanks Matt for comparing AWD and FWD and not simply focussing on the manual transmission in this review. I was on the fence about AWD (my current car is AWD, which is helpful in upstate NY, but my current commute is on well maintained roads, so I don't really need AWD), now I know I want the FWD version (though Auto transmission for me, I've owned both and for now I prefer the Auto with the ability to fully make use of start/stop adaptive cruise). I'll spend the cost difference between the Premium AWD and FWD trim on a set of wheels and snow tires if I think I need them, though the gas savings over time will also make FWD the better choice for me.

Not enough power for awd to have a significant performance benefit. When I test drove my cx5 I went with fwd bc of everything he said, It felt lighter and quicker than awd. 2.5lt, not the new turbo.

Having not driven a manual for over 10 years, and even that only being for a day or two, the Mazda dealer here let me test drive a manual (even after telling them that). Thing was quite easy to work with, though I dunno if I'd want it for city driving. Lots of friends in the city swear by manual though, so I dunno. I want a Sedan and Canada only gets the 2.0L with manual for those. I plan to test an auto come springtime and see how that "feels", but I may try out a manual again. Should feel a lot better than my Focus' DCT, anyway...

I just bought this same premium model in manual (my first manual) and my first day I was having some trouble finding the bite point. I think I'm releasing the clutch either too slow (so I stall? Or maybe it's not enough gas, but usually I give it about 1 to 2.5k rpm when releasing the clutch) Or too fast so my tires screech and I jolt forward as I start to go. I practiced in a parking lot for an hour prior to driving home just stopping and going and seemed to start to get the hang of it but then driving for 3 hours straight home I kind of forgot how I did it precisely since I didn't have to stop along the highway. Also shifting from 1st to 2nd and then to 3rd is a bit jerky but shifting to 4th and 5th is not noticable at ALL, PERFECTLY smooth. I feel like I try to let the rpms drop a bit to match the next gear for the speed but those low gears still seem to jerk a bit. It's only my first day with it though, but it's been QUITE stressful stalling at lights or in turn lanes 😅. I put a big fat "learning manual" paper in the rear window.

Had my mind set on a civic si but these do look nice. Also a fan of NA engines so that's a plus for the mazda too, and it being a beautiful looking hatchback means a lot. Does the 3 have at least a brake simulated LSD? Does it work well? Too bad the seats are so wide. That's also a complaint I have about my current mazda 6. Thanks for making all those nice reviews, I've watched many of them.

Civic SI was at the top of my list also. But the non turbo, engine, Hatchback option, & the styling blow the Honda out of the ballpark. By styling, I’m referring to the inside and outside of the Mazda Hatchback. It does not have the boy-racer looks of the Honda. The styling is beautiful! The premium look and feel of the Mazda’s interior surpasses the Honda. The quietness of the interior and the Bose sound system speaks to the music devotee in me! The minor horsepower discrepancy and lack of an limited slip differential don’t seem important anymore! I Love ❤️ this car!

Yes I'm a bit torn too as well now. Still the 3 will be thousands more than the SI. I love and hate my current 6 though. Dislikes are the seats (lack support), no LSD (always one wheel wheel spinning when gunning it from a stop), and size (too long). The 3 only fixes size I'm affraid whereas the SI fixes almost everything....

So no one talks about the rear suspension set up on the two wheel drive.. Beam axle any one? Why dump the IRS? That's not zoom zoom in my book. Beam axels are terrible and cheap way to go. Most roads in citys are rough and full of pot holes.

What's the strategy of only offering the manual in the FWD? Subaru does the same thing, only offer manuals with certain trims. I'm in the market for a new daily and really like this car but I live in a area that AWD is a must.

It is funny how model options change depending on the country. In Canada we can get the Sedan GX and GS with a manual but only with the 2.0L. The 3 Sport Gets manual option on all 3 trim levels with the 2.5L.

The only problem with the 2019 Mazda's is it has the exact same motor and transmission as my 2013 6 speed. I went and looked at one yesterday and was impressed even for the base model but it'd definitely be nice if they gave it a hp bump

Means the engine is proven. Problem with new engines is they usually have some sort of problem during its life cycle which is why manufacturers tend to put out different versions of an engine as it gets older. Lexus follows this principle which is one of the reasons why they’ve maintained their reputation on good reliability.

I'm in love with this car. Kudos to Mazda for still providing a good manual in an elegant, sporty, and compact package! Still trying to decide between this, a GTI, a WRX, and the Focus ST. I really want Mazda to make this same configuration with a turbo! I'd be at the dealer the moment that happens (if it happens...)
