I have been waiting 3 weeks for the fencing company to come to repair this. I fixed it myself in 10 mins after watching this. I appreciate it, brother!

YES! All day, baby! Stoked we could help. As I said in the video, there are ZERO composite fence gates I interact with that operate properly. Nice work.

If you shim it between the panels or under the far end, you can break it loose with a wrench, then spin the nuts by hand, very quickly an easily, then give them another 1/4-1/2 turn to snug them in. Most vinyl gates do have adjustable hinges these days. If yours don't, they don't cost a huge amount of money to change out the old school hinges for adjustable. Be sure the screw holes get sealed up and are going to be covered by replacement hinges when you swap them.

We appreciate your input, but shims and whatnot don't apply here. And there, in my experience, is no amount of shimming these post sleeves I've ever seen function correctly 37-minutes after the fence is installed.

Lol, yeah go to the post and pop the cap off, see if there is an I beam in it or not...pray there is, and that someone didn't concrete it in the wrong way.

OK, armchair expert, no. By "I beam" you mean "post". Usually these are sleeved 4x4. Sometimes there is aluminum webbing, but it doesn't matter. 100% of the vinyl gates I interact with don't work correctly.

@myfixituplife 13 years experience in a family business of 60 years actually this guy is partly correct. We use aluminum A-beams in all gate posts, They can be flipped incorrectly and the hinge will miss 3/4 or 2/3 holes directly into the pvc. I've only seen the big box stores use the cheap materials that come with wood inserts. This feels like lowes product. But also the creator is correct, theres hardly a vinyl gate you will come across that doesn't have problems, and the easiest fix to a gate not latching is to do just this. Not exactly correct (as you adjust hinges you are moving the frame 'out of square) but quick and easy. Unless it has a steel frame, it's going to sag, doesn't matter if the gate frame is riveted, uses pockets, only a matter of time.

Hey, maybe you could help me out. I did the adjustment and the that would make the gate close automatically but it’s not closing automatically any pointers thanks.

I actually might be able to help. Self-closing hinges need to be properly tensioned. There's probably a few small holes at the top of the hinge barrel. And there's probably as little steel rod that came with the hinge but is long gone. Twisting that cap (and a few other moves; it's been a while since I've done it on other hinges) tensions the spring inside the hinge. - See if you can find a brand name or model number stamped on the hinge, then google the product installation instructions. Short story long, my guess is that there is a spring that needs to be tensioned.

I don't disagree, Number of vinyl gates I've interacted with that function properly, expressed as a percentage: 0%. Well, that's not true. 99%. This one worked after I fixed it.

Wait you mean you're not supposed to just unscrew the latch and move it up a bit every few years?

Where do you get those metal braces?

“Braces”? I think you might mean “hinge hardware”. I don’t use them, so I don’t know but I’d start with Lowes of Depot.

I meant exactly what I said. I was referring to the cross braces on the gates. Nm, I found them at my distributor. FYI, those cross braces are considered compression braces. And the "hinge hardware" are "wrap around spring hinges".

  • @myfixituplife

@@johnshanahan6439 Gotcha. Honestly, I didn't even notice them. 99% of the gates I go through don't have them. You're right, these are in compression. They drive the weight of the gate into the bottom hinge, then into the post. Glad you found them.

How do you adjust if the latch irequires a vertical (vs. horizontal) adjustment?…

  • @myfixituplife

    @myfixituplife

    Жыл бұрын

To raise the latch, you'd adjust the latch-side, top hinge. I'd start there. You may need to adjust the bolt side down. You know you're in there like swimwear when the hardware operates well and the gate and post are parallel with each other.

  • @jameskirk3

Usually it's racked so far that the latch doesn't line up. Typically the top hinge will need to pull the panel back, and the bottom is likely in the original spot. Sometimes the posts are leaning. When a panel tikts, the latch moves diagonally since it's fixed on the panel.

You can only raise or lower it so much at the corners with the top & bottom hinges. Otherwise, you have to reposition it on the posts. Cover the holes with aluminum or stainless plates.
