Quick Comparisons: Seymour Duncan Invader SH8 VS Lace Alumitone Pickup Shootout

Ойын-сауық

Wired an old Seymour Duncan SH-8 Invader I had just bought used decided to do a little shootout. I toggle between bridge position, middle position and neck with just the neck pickup in a coil split with the bridge in series. Love this mix for clean sounds!

    Perhaps a little too clear , sterile sounding. They are made using old ribbon microphone technology after all and the output of the metal single frame with fridge magnets beefed up by a high turns ratio transformer. A very cheap way of making pups . You can make them at stuff found at home . A 240v wall wart , a bit of copper or brass bent in a U shape around a bar magnet 🧲. Just solder the 5v out ends to each end of the U and the 240v end goes to your pots as usual . A good way of achieving the pickup less look without resorting to piezo. My Brasstones are 56mm wide ( across strings) , 12mm across pickup and 3mm thick . I hid one in the 24th fret end of the fret board, the other under the veneer at the bridge . They are 100% reliable and if the transformer goes down just replace it in the control cavity .The little transformers to boost voltage from these inductors go in the control cavity with room to spare and with a 40 + turns to 1 ratio give a very solid signal . I'm guessing 110v 5v wall warts in the States would work almost as well . Ignore the nonsense about neodymium magnets , inductors recognise Gauss and its delivery not the magnetic material that produces it .

    Pickups dont sound dumbass.. They give different output levels as well as noise levels. Alumitone have higher output therfor might sound more full while Duncan sound thiner because of lower output. If you turn volume/gain of Duncans to the same level of Alumitone before the amp they should sound almost identical. Its the amp reacting diffrently to different pickup output. The pickup itself dont have any sound or tone.

    @@maximilianmoy I friggin love em. I'm baffled as to why these aren't more common. Especially in metal. It was funny at 1st cuz they way nothing and kinda brittle, just not what you're use to. But once plugged in they sound great. You try a feedback test with them. I've noticed there's absolutely no feedback at all. A very pleasant surprise. I thought it was the gate in my precision drive pedal...until I realized the pedal wasn't even on. You can max out your rigs volume and rest the guitar on the friggin thing and no feedback whatsoever...i don't know how the hell that works but I love that it does lol. I really hope these guys release some different versions. It seems its kind of a 1 size fits all. But I'm curious what would happen with a little experimenting with sizes and magnetism and mix it up a little. Also if you haven't checked out Dialtone pickups, do so asap...you normally can't claim somthings the best pickup ever cuz everyone's taste is different...this guy has truly made the greatest pickup ever. A fully adjustable on the fly pickup that can be made to sound like anything is a game changer...its some genius from MIT that made them, literally lol

    Are the Alumitone pickups active or passive? I'm looking forward into getting a Alumitone Colored Humbucker in Red but I was also considering the EMG 81 X Red since I'm familiar with the 81 tone but I've heard that the 81 X sounds richer and fuller, also are the Alumitone super different compared to an EMG 81/81X in your opinion? • @maximilianmoy

    @maximilianmoy

    4 жыл бұрын

    I would say they're super different. An EMG 81 from my memory didn't have great cleans. The 81X offers more headroom so it should be a bit better but they excel in distortion. Also, these alumitones are passive, no battery required, the EMGs are the opposite. If you play metal only, you can't go wrong with EMGs. I personally love the 85 in the bridge. It's a slightly smoother/thicker version of the 81. And I believe the killswitch engage guys used to use them. Good luck!

    I wish people would stop using words like "warmer" to describe sound. It isn't fucking warmer. Its producing less output in the high frequency range. That might be your taste, but the word "Warmer" is grossly misleading because it sounds more appealing than "colder" which is horseshit. All this fuckery came from engineers who worked in studios as techs and couldn't actually play anything so they began using ridiculous jargon like this to make themselves feel better about the fact that they were basically technicians, NOT creatives. The invader has a better representation of the full frequency spectrum, and if you like "warm" (or what I call a lack of high end or over-represented lows and low-mids) then all you have to do is turn down your TONE KNOB. Any bright pickup can be made warm AF by turning down the tone knob. And WTF is "Character?" Really? "CHARACTER". Does the sound pay its bills on time and always tell the truth? GTFOOH with that bullshit. Dont you even get me started on how much "rounder it sounds". Seriously. I will spit on you.

    I started out with 500k on my death bar/ x bar's and then dropped them down to 250k with a 250k resistor across the outer legs of the pot to simulate 120 ish k because I don't have a tone knob at the moment. It seems like the range just dropped some on the knob, meaning, when the pickup was all the way maxed out with my volume knob on 500k the overall ranged decreased some and the high frequencies went down slightly, I'll guesstimate 10 to 15% reduction. I have a really bright amp and speakers so it was a good adjustment considered the lace pickups are pretty hot, bright, and scooped a bit sound-wise. I feel like the Lace recommendation is a good one since now when playing high gain the feedback doesn't happen till I max out my volume knob when playing loud, but before it would a quarter inch away from the max of my volume pot
