Teaching portable sawmill techniques! It was a pleasure having Brock from @Rockhillfarmandhomes youtube channel visit us and share in our adventure. Brock is thinking about buying a portable sawmill, so I did my best to take him through using our manual Frontier OS23 sawmill. I didn't know much, so it was a short class. I hope you enjoy this real-life video. Thank you to Brock and Stacey for visiting with us. They are wonderful people. #frontiersawmills #sawmills #tymtractors

Thank you for future beginner sawyers.
Thanks! Nice to see the process on a big oak log. Here in Atlantic Canada, we cut mainly spruce, fir, pine, some juniper (larch), hemlock, and birch and maple.

Thanks for your sawmill wisdom, Tony. Great videography. And, this is free advice passed down 3 generations: keep the sawdust out of the garden soil. Everybody will be happier if you make char out of it, cycle through the compost pile, then add to your garden as a charged biochar. Again, great video!

I hear you on the sawdust, but currently, I have clay which does not hold water. I am going to put it down and till it in. I will add extra nitrogen to help it rot. Will add some as ash too.in a couple years I will have good soil.

Awesome information on this video!! Really appreciate the advice on things that I took for granted. Like the waste (so to speak, to burn in the fire). And how many people do you really want on your property. Didn’t think about that, only thought in my head was getting these logs cut up. Great ideas on this one, thank you for sharing your knowledge sir.

I enjoyed your video. I learned 2 things from it.... The Bucket Trick and the scissor jacks under the frame... I have a 20 year old kit mill that I have been using on the ground. I just bought a 12 x 6 foot trailer and will put the mill up on the trailer. Much better for my knees.... So YOUR tips will help this setup. Thanks :)

You gave some great advise, your points especially about taking in allowance for kerf and its change from bottom of each cut to top of your last cut I think was the hardest for me to get in my head...lol And I agree you have plenty of power, how many horse on that new engine? Anyway great video, the struggle is real on certain logs. I like my tow board jack to make the pith even from end to end. And for Brock even with hydraulics you have to have something to move a log 36" x 10 ' long,. W Oak or B Walnut might weigh 4200 lbs. and more👍

Great instructional video Tony and Tanya Brock needs all the help he can get he's got larger trees than you
@TonysTractorAdventure

He needs a bigger sawmill.
You need to make some wedge blocks to beat into the bottom at 34:30 to help square up the log with the stops. 4x4, 4x6 or 6x6 6"-8" long with a 45 degree, as you beat on the block it'll kick the bottom over and flush up the surfaces on the stops. A couple wedges and a mini sledge can always come in handy in situations like this, especially if you work alone. As for the PITH cut, you mentioned at the beginning, when you measured both ends, that you needed to put a board under one end to level the pith....but you forgot to put the toe board under it. Oops!! Hey, it happens. Great tutorial. I'm already subscribed to his channel, so I'll be looking forward to his new adventures when he gets his Mill. I already saw his version of this about 2 weeks ago and I've been waiting to see if it would show up on here too. Thank you for the extended version. 👍

Thank you. It is funny you say that. I bought a bunch of plastic wedges for the sawmill.
I’ve just started to watch your video. When it came to time to gas up your machine, I cringed when you had to lift that gascan up. You’re much younger than I am but I now use a battery operated pump to fill my quad and lawnmower. It is so nice with the automatic shut off. Mine was right around $75.

Another tip is not to drop the logs on the saw bed. I've seen many tubers drop the log from as far as 1 foot above the bed. And then complain the mill is always getting out of square.

It happens. Portable sawmills will get knocked out of level. It is part of operations. I would re-level each morning if the work required it. Lastly, we are making rough cut lumber.
To bad you are not in northern Ca would love those cut offs

It must be a video mirage. I have looked at this video many times and inspected the sawmill. I can't find anything loose.
at 41.18 the helper was standing smack dead end of the chainsaw as the other guy was cutting in which in my experience you do not stand in the line of fire incase the blade brakes.

Is 7 degree blades good for all hard wood as Lurning about sawer milling timber
@TonysTractorAdventure
3 ай бұрын
I am afraid I don't have enough experience to see all hardwood. 7° blades do a very good job on the hardwoods that I have cut. White Oak and Hickory are the hardest that I cut.
So Tony, which blade do you think actually works better for hard wood, the 7 degree or 10 degree blade. I just purchased my mill and I will be cutting mostly hickory and oak. Thanks and hope to hear back before I order my box of blades.
@TonysTractorAdventure
Жыл бұрын
The 7degree blade is much smoother and faster. It takes more HP. I don't think I would have done it with the 7 HP engine

Well another example of why I should watch the whole video before asking a question. You answered it at the halfway point of the video. 7 degree cuts hard wood better, thanks Tony.

Hey tony! When you said the backhoe on your small tractor would lift 2500 lbs were you talking about the t-25? I have a t 25 and I’m looking into a sawmill. Just curious if the backhoe will lift more than the front loader. Thanks!

@charger7022

@@TonysTractorAdventure right at the 19 min mark you mentioned you could use the backhoe on your smaller tractor to lift the logs. Might make a good video lifting things with the t25 backhoe. I can’t find any ratings anywhere and I’d be curious if the backhoe can lift more than a grapple on the loader.
@TonysTractorAdventure

I don't recommend lifting with the backhoe. So many people have broken the backhoe off. No brand of the compact tractor is built like commercial equipment. They are not strong enough to be cranes. You can get away with a little, but eventually it will cost big.

Thank you. I can't tell any difference.
I don't understand why you just don't roll it 180 if you have to put the tractor on it regardless. It has to be better than turning it a 1/4 then muscling it in place for 5 minutes...
@TonysTractorAdventure
Жыл бұрын
It is different in real life using a manual mill. Think about it. You pass up the 1/4 turn spot using more effort to get to 180. Then you have two flat spots on opposite sides. You will still have to turn it back to the uneven sides. This adds one extra turn when the log is at its heaviest.
You should have got yourself a wood-mizer
