Questions arise over alleged racial slurs at college volleyball match | Dan Abrams Live

Brigham Young University is still investigating who was responsible for allegedly yelling racial slurs at a Duke University player during a volleyball match. John Ziegler, host of the podcast "With the Benefit of Hindsight," says the media was duped and quick to accept a s ingle narrative about the incident without asking questions.
Dan Abrams Live brings a fresh, no-holds-barred approach to covering and analyzing the news.

I think the only way for BYU to address this is to file a lawsuit for defamation against this Duke student. She caused damage worth millions to BYU (monetary and reputation). They will do this to regain their reputation, not for the money. If they don't sue then these people will continue to be held unaccountable.

I’m begging for someone in the media to ask the Duke players if they heard it!! The Duke player stated BYU and officials did nothing when told about her claims. That is a statement that is a proven lie. BYU Coach Olmstead immediately reported it to the event staff and they directed the police officer to stand between the ROC and the Duke bench to address any improper activity. They also sent 4 ushers into the ROC to question and report any impropriety. The police officer also stated a Duke official stood beside him monitoring the situation as well. Why haven’t any Duke coaches, players or officials been questioned on the record? The young man who’s been punished deserves to be vindicated. Video footage clearly shows he was not present when she served a couple of times and can be seen using his phone the other time she served. How can we not believe all of the evidence reported by BYU when Duke hasn’t officially said anything??

And there are people out there so desperate for a reason to shout racism that they won't accept the obvious. Jessie II. And the "gaping mouths". Watch the video of the game. The first time I heard this story was on ABC's Good Morning America (a program on which Dan Abrams frequently appears.) If I recall correctly it was reported by black, ex-football star, Michael Strahan. I watch Good Morning America virtually every weekday morning and have not seen any follow up to inform its audience of the possibility that events may not have occurred as described. If Mr Abrams truly embodied the integrity he tries to portray, he would refuse to appear on that show until corrective action is taken. I am not holding my breath.

Here is a fact witness: I was at the match and was about 20-30 feet from the alleged location where Rachel was "racially heckled". I didn't even know about these allegations until the next day. Neither did the BYU Volleyball team. After I heard these accusations, I went back and watched the match a couple more times on BYUTV. Here are some facts that I know: 1. Rachel served 4 times total on the student section side during the whole match. 2 in the second set and 2 in the 4th set. In her interviews on different news channels, she said that the first time she went up to serve, she thought she heard a "racial slur". Then the second time she went up to serve, she said, "Yep, that's what I heard". Those were both in the second set out of 4 sets. It was after this second set that she told her trusted teammate about what she heard. Her teammate told her coach and word got to the BYU coach, who told the proper authorities in the venue. Those proper authorities sent a police officer and 4 event staff members into the student section (ROC) to see if they could see or hear anything. This was done for the 4th set because on sets 1 and 3 the Duke team was on the other end of the court which was not the side she claimed it happened on. In Rachel's interviews and written statements, she stated that the racial slurs had escalated and got worse as the match went on. That would mean that the two times that she served in the 4th and final set, that the racial slurs were the worst. The 4th set is when they had a police officer and 4 staff members in the student section for the purpose of watching and listening for racial slurs directed at this player. They heard and saw nothing at all. Neither did anyone else. 2. In volleyball matches, there are two referees at the net and one on each end of the court watching the lines, etc. Each of the 4 times that Rachel served from the student section in sets 2 and 4, the line referee was right there next to her and should have been to hear if there were racial slurs yelled. The referees are hired by the NCAA and are not affiliated with either school. She heard nothing. 3. So far in all of the interviews and written statements of Rachel that I have seen, she just said they were racial slurs and heckling. It was the Godmother and Rachel's father, who neither one of them were at the match, were the ones that added their own narrative with the racial slurs being the "N" word and that, "All Black people will go to hell". 4. Rachel also said that her other 3 black teammates were racially heckled. Well, if you watch the whole match on video, you will see that the other three black teammates were on the sideline the whole match. In sets 1 and 3 they were directly in front of the Duke Parents and family section and right next to their coaching staff. In sets 2 and 4 they were directly in front of the BYU Parents and family section and still right next to their coaching staff. If they were heckled with racial slurs, the parents and coaches would have certainly heard them. In the investigation by BYU athletics, nobody else has said they they heard any racial heckling except one Rachel Richardson. Not the other three black Duke athletes or the Duke coaches. 5. Rachel's Fairy Godmother, Lesa Pamplin, who was NOT at the match, first tweeted the story out the day after the match. She added that a white man told Rachel to "Watch her back on the way to the team bus". I never saw Rachel say or write that. I think that the Godmother made that part up, but I don't know. Lesa Pamplin is running for public office in Fort Worth Texas. The Cougar Chronicle investigated the story and looked at Lesa Pamplin's social media and screen shotted a bunch of highly racial tweets against white people, or as she called them "Whypipoe". She is so concerned about her Goddaughter being treated badly by "racist" people, yet we see that she is actually a proven racist. She immediately changed her personal social media accounts to "private", but not until they were able to screen shot her racist tweets. So, the only evidence of racism in this story is Lesa Pamplin's racist tweets. You can find them by searching Cougar Chronicle-Lesa Pamplin. If nobody out of the 5,507+ fans heard anything and neither did teammates, coaches, referees, police, staff members, or anybody except Rachel Richardson, I lean toward believing that it didn't happen. She is obviously an activist. Just read her statements and watch her news interviews.

Outside of a public apology "what ever that means these days", what would be the proper "accountability" for someone who makes false claims of racism? The point is, if we DONT set examples for false claims, what's to stop it from happening in the future? Its no different to "set an example" for a person ACTUALLY shouting racial slurs'. Apparently the "accountability" was for the person to be banned from all the games, and rightfully so. So again, what is a students "accountability" going to look like? Maybe the accused needs to file a defamation suite against Duke and Duke can then deal with her. Maybe the NCAA needs to make a public statement on what their policy is "if they have one and if not, better get one before we go through this again" on students making false racism claims. This "accountability" has to work BOTH ways for the accuser and the accused or it DOESNT WORK!

(I think they should not be that close to athletes) I included all the serves that Rachel Richardson did (I hope I didn't miss one). It looks like she served twice in front of the ROC. It looks like the fans were just making one loud yell rather than saying words when the servers had their turns. There is a clip where player #4 and a fellow player looked at the ROC with concern. Maybe something happened then. It's hard to detect if she did receive a racial slur. But Rachel Richardson claimed that she received racial slurs through out the entire match. Technically in some case young people especially under pressure may develop under situational stress? Some young people tend to over react to their heightened emotions. For example: Someone hearing things that was never said is called; Hebephrenic schizophrenia. Also known as 'disorganised schizophrenia', this type of schizophrenia typically develops when you're 15-25 years old. Symptoms include disorganised behaviours and thoughts, alongside short-lasting delusions and hallucinations.
