Questions about Patmos with Dr. Mark Wilson

Enjoy this sneak peek excerpt from our latest Thinking Man Lecture Series with Dr. Mark Wilson, “Exploring the 7 Churches of Revelation.”
You will meet Dr. Wilson, learn about his background, and hear about the Island of Patmos where the letters to the 7 churches were written by the Apostle John.
What insights can we gain from Patmos regarding the historical and geopolitical context of the book of Revelation? What was the reason for John’s exile to this island and what would life on the island have been like for him?

Dear Sir, I am absolutely fascinated by the existence of a penal colony on Patmos at the time of John's exile. The common view is that John was completely alone on the island, which history points out that not to be true. Is there any archeological evidence of the penal colony or colonies on the island? What conclusions do you have regarding John's involvement with other prisoners (as well has his scribe) on the island, some of which very likely were Christians themselves since they would not worship Domitian? Weren't there several scrolls rather than just one that would have been transported to Ephesus as John was writing , since Revelation is so dynamic that it would seem that it may have been several consecutive visions rather than just one ? Not only that, but if he wrote letters to 7 churches, wouldn't each letter go to each of those churches separately?

please go deeper into the dating of the book. Ive always heard 95 AD as the traditional date but interested to know more about why you would date it so much earlier in the 60s.

My answer would include that there is no mention of the destruction of Jerusalem. As that was such a major event it surely would have been mentioned as a fulfilment of a prophecy made by the Lord at the mount of olives, meaning that it had not yet taken place by the time it was written.

Jesus was most likely born about 8 BC. We know that Caesar Augustus ordered a census in that year. Also, Herod the Great was king of Judea at the time of Jesus's birth. Herod died in 4 BC, probably between 10 March and 13 April. We know, from the Bible, that Joseph was told, in a dream, to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt until it was safe to return, which was following the death of Herod. Jesus was most likely born in the Spring. Luke describes angels announcing the birth to shepherds “keeping watch over their flocks by night.” This most certainly did not occur in the depth of winter. It was decided in the 4th Century that Christmas would be celebrated on 25 December. If it had been decided to have Christmas in a more historically accurate time, we could have been celebrating Christmas and Easter at the same time. I don't remember an exact age as to when Jesus began his ministry. It is generally given as to when he was about 30, and his ministry lasted for 3 years. Thus, Jesus was about 33 when He was crucified. This, then, would have been about 25 AD.

You have really done your research. It's actually nice to see. A time line that's closer to historical fact. Christmas was a pegan holiday. That was taken over by the church. During the days that they. Was trying to convert the whole world to Christianity. They used most of the Pegan holidays. Making the transition to Christianity easier
