CBS repeatedly has the building wrong in their photos. Bit embarrassing. It clearly was the one closest to the stage, on the far downward slope of the roof, so the slant gave him some protection from being seen. He climbed across the roofs from maybe way back - was seen going from roof to roof, there are connections between the buildings.

So the spectators saw the man with a rifle on the roof and they had to tell the security that the man shooting was on the roof. I always thought the secret service had hair trigger response abilities. In this case the they did not. They were told by the spectators what was going on! Just insane!
