In case anyone is curious, I looked it up & yes Charles Darwin (1809-1882) & Steve Irwin (1962-2006) did in fact own the same tortious. Harriet The Galapagos Tortoise was born in 1830, she was collected by Charles Darwin in 1835, she lived in England after Darwin died, she was later transported to Australia, & she died in the Beerwah, Australia Zoo under the ownership of Steve Irwin in 2006 at the age of 175.

I enjoyed this because, yes, the Bill Hader comparisons are impossible to avoid, but Michael Longfellow adds his own personality quirks, more of an offbeat presence alongside the malevolence. I really appreciate seeing this sketch. I love and admire tortoises. Not only are they happily slow and sedentary, they get to live long lives. I can only wish to live forever. But, also, Tortoises are seen in movies and stories as being logical and wise, Buddhist-like. When I unalive, I hope to one day reincarnate as a Tortoise.

"...locking a minor into a 190 year contract." It's funny because it's true, and a great many turtle societies and reptile rescues would LOVE to know who to thank for this amazingly accurate script. Sulcatas grow up to 70-100lbs and at about 40lbs they can go through chain link fence and dry wall. They eat like cows and crap like cows and don't hibernate. There are hundreds needing new homes, but they do best in warmer climates unless you want your basement to smell like a zoo, or you have a heated shed, garage, or stable for the winter.

I've been watching SNL since I watched Episode 1 with George Carlin live as a kid, and this is one of the funniest sketches I've ever seen. I don't know why it makes me laugh so hard every time I see it, and I've seen it about twenty times by now. Maybe it's the perfect comedic timing of Emma Stone that elevates it so much, but Longfellow just nails every detail perfectly. Great writing, great timing, and Longfellow is now one of my all-time favorites. We need him in more sketches.
