    Giving the fact that this is pretty much the only RPG the N64 had, the game is pretty well know I think. I also read somewhere that the game sold better in Japan than OOT, but I couldn’t verify that Info when I searched for it just now. There is also a fight over if this game is trash or a masterpiece, one reason for it is that you cannot save your progress if you don’t own a memory card, and back than on the N64 I remember almost no one had one, because 99% of all games had batteries inside to save.

    Thank you for running Quest 64! So many memories! This game destroyed my first N64 controller when I rubber-banded the joystick and kept Brian running overnight in town to level up agility. Good times.

    (On most N64 games) you can hold the analog stick in a direction while the game is booting up and it will think it's the default / neutral, so letting go of the stick in physical-neutral will make the game think you are holding it in the other direction from its "digital neutral". Now go level up without rubber bands lol.

    I played this game so much when I was a kid, I remember it being hard as hell. I only beat it once and after countless of failed attempts, only after I maxed out Water and then balanced the other elements did I win.

    I played this game to death too and years later im a bit disappointed when i realized that every time i beat it, it wasn't using the plethora of magics the game give you, instead it was just abusing magic barrier, vampiric staff and the melee attack lol

    This was one of my favorite "unknown" games from when I was a kid. My first run I tried balancing all the elements and was severely underpowered by mid game, so I made a hard decision to start over and just maxed aero/air which worked much better. Such a hard game but so fun. I also like that the battle theme music is so similar to FF7's lol

    Know if it was 50fps which was a PAL standard? I'm wondering if emulated that the PAL version may be scaled up to 60fps from 50, and run 20% faster.

    @@XionEternum minor point of contention, almost no n64 games ran at 50/60 fps (F Zero X might be the only one). But yes, the PAL version would run at 5/6ths the speed of NTSC

    We had this game when I was a kid, but our n64 memory pack was defective or something, and would randomly erase itself completely. This meant we always had to try to beat this game in one sitting or leave the N64 turned on for days while we played through. The furthest we ever got was around Guilty or just beyond. Knowing speedrun strats would have been great back then, we might have been able to finish it!

    This is definitely one of the great gems of the n64. I would love to see a sequel or remake on the switch. I still play this every few years. Never really had much trouble with first boss. But I remember that one in the forest you fight in a small ring and I believe they used wind spells and they could be tough.

I was like... they were set up like they were going to join but then didn't. I remember feeling pretty confused. And I remember grinding out water heavily because that's all I ended up using. Sounds like I made the right decision, lol. Edit: Also... didn't we get a memory card with the system? I swore we did...

    Some things I picked up about this game from watching this. The sound byte when getting items from chests reminds me of a sound byte they used in Golden Sun. Lots of long distance running to locations with a stubby-legged character, takes up a majority of the time just travelling to locations. The spirits kind of look like they represent four basic elements of Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. Still not sure of the intended mechanic of them, what is their purpose?

  • @bingchang

    @bingchang

    3 жыл бұрын

    Main reason is for more damage for Avalanche, the all element levels affect each other, but adjacent (in this case fire/water) have a stronger affect. Secondary reason is for compression which we would use for an OOB at the beginning of Limelin area

    Why does a game like this even need a memory card? It doesn't save more stats than other games, does it? 1 number per ability, maybe 8 in total, 2 byte each, and 1 number per element stat, 1 byte each, 1 byte for the safe point. About the same number of hidden stats. Most probably take away the chests and spirits. So almost 100 spirits, and probably a multiple of chests, so about 500 spirits and chests together maybe. But that's still not more than the chests, etc. you collect in Zelda, right?
