Quest 2 For Flight Simulation

Ойындар

Here we demonstrate the use of VR for flight simulation using the Oculus Quest 2. We focus on Gliding. Watch out for upcoming videos for other G.A stuff and a discussion video on the use of VR flight simulators in flight training
Thanks go to Guy Rossler for the Condor 2 sequence. Check out his channel at / guyse7en
Check out my website at virtualflight.org.uk where you'll find every day is Black Friday. We have put together some stunning hardware combos optimised for both X-Plane and Condor 2 that won't break the bank. There's even an "optimised for everything both now and in the future" system that might break the bank - but hey, you shouldn't have to change anything for the next 10 years
Oculus Quest 2 also available for purchase but stocks likely to be limited this side of Christmas (2020 in case you're catching up on Dave!! (joke) )

    You mentioned vision being one of the factors in VR. I'm just on the edge of being able to use VR. I'm monocularly sighted, with 20/400, and limited vertical field of view, in the right eye, and 20/2000, and similar loss of field of view, in left eye. I'm not able to see the tiny text in many of the OQ2 apps, which limits my library a tad. Of course, this means I can't perceive depth, but at least I'm able to move my head, to look around in VR. Until now, I've been using a 46" monitor for flight sims, once they became affordable. Oh, I won't have to worry about my nieces nicking my OQ2. It's got the lock screen active. LOL Thanks for the video.

    Hi Thomas, you can get prescription lense inserts for Q2 - not sure about US PRICES - about £80 UK. You need to know what your script is for a reading distance of 1.5 meters which is what the Q2 emulates

  • @ThomasGrillo

    @ThomasGrillo

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@rocketmandlgc Yes, I've seen those slip on lens inserts. My reading distance is one, or two inches. Normally, in the 2D, real world, I use a 46" monitor, with Windows Magnifier turned on, and set nearly all the way to full magnification. In VR, I have to walk up to menus, to get within inches of them, to read them. I currently use my glasses, though I may try a prescription for "media" glasses, which actually focus on the 1.5 metre range, to match the OQ2 distance. Mind you, I am monocularly sighted (one eye), so I'm guessing the distance you speak of is the point in space where two eyes converge, and not actually the focal length. I'll have to look into that. Frankly, I'd love to find a way to shut off 3D, and just have the right eye feed active, or a copy of it on both eye pieces, since that's how I see, in the real world. Would save tons of compute power, you know. LOL

    VR flight simming is amazing. The sense of "being there" just cannot be conveyed in flat screen videos. As @rocketmandlgc says, you really have to experience it to understand. Yes, it's not without limitations, but nothing comes close in terms of immersion.

    Hi there, great video. I managed to get X-Plane 11 up and running on my Mac with the Oculus Quest 2. I had to partition my drive and run bootcamp to get the Oculus up and running. I eventually got X-Plane running in VR but the quality isn't that great unfortunately. Still flyable though. I tried introducing the Orbx scenery into the mix but, again, its not cutting it. I need to invest in a decent pc setup to harness the quality you have achieved!!!!

    Multiplayer demo here kzread.info/dash/bejne/qI1omKxucbLSpag.html I will do a how to video some time after Christmas. Using X-Plane and JoinFS you can hook up with friends across the globe and fly together. Not in this video but you can also (with the friends permission, jump into each other's cockpit and also take over their controls. I believe you can do the same/use JoinFS with both P3D and MSFS, although I believe MSFS has its own group flying facility built in - never tried it so don't know how good it is. You can be in the same room but would need two PC's and two copies of each program, and of course two Quests - or you could just stay at home and hook up online. My video was made in a glider for the benefit of the fellow glider pilots. You are right about the scenery in MSFS and I will be reviewing it on day one. For glider pilots however we are going to have to wait up to 12 months for gliding to be a reality in that package. There are a number of people working on importing some legacy gliders from FSX and progress is quite good but you need to be good at tinkering to get them working which is beyond the scope of most real world (more senior) glider pilots who have no experience of modelling/tweaking/Tinkering under the hood In any event if you live in the UK it’s not a problem in X-Plane because we have the absolutely awesome ORBX True earth Great Britain scenery which is way superior to MSFS (until such time as they bring out a scenery update for the UK) much of the UK Peak district National Park where I fly is just plain wrong in MSFS. So for the foreseeable future it is X-Plane all the way

    @@Glider324 ridge lift works really well (very realistic) in XP. I co wrote some plugins (X-Winch, Towplane-X and Therm-X) which provides truly realistic launch experience. Therm-X does two things 1) injects thermals into XP’s real weather (you may have noticed the thermal sliders get disabled when you turn on real weather) 2) it also does some realistic (but overridable) thermal calculations based on your own manual weather settings. It takes into account time of day/year sun angle and a bunch of other stuff - all available for free on the org. Thermals are great now and proving Austin sticks to his promise, will be under cumulus in the next release. Fingers crossed You can read about X-Winch at virtualflight.org.uk/plugins/x-winch/

    At the moment yes, there are no VR headsets that work with a Mac. But don't jump just yet. The rumour mill is working overtime on the Apple VR/AR front at the moment. So keep watching and listening and above all, start saving your pennies. The Oculus Quest however is a fully stand alone headset (256Gb version) that allows you to buy and download games directly to the headset (no pc required) - just not any of the recognised flight sim packages - they are waaay too memory hungry and need a lot of processing power. I personally like playing Table Tennis in VR with some buddies, and my grandkids LOVE Epic Roller Coaster - especially the one that runs through Dinosaur land.

    I think the Quest 2 with its link cable is not suited for PC VR. It’s not made for PC VR. Compared to Oculus Rift or Rift S it has, yes, a higher resolution. But as far as I know with the link cable you cannot access its full resolution due to video compression. The PC has to compress the video signal and the processor on the Quest 2 has to decompress it. Some users complain about compression artifacts and similar things. Thus you’ll loose video quality. You can access the full resolution in wireless scenarios, without using a PC (like the Quest 2 is made for). Higher resolution, like the Quest 2 has to offer, but loosing quality/resolution due to a compressed video signal on a USB-C glas fiber connection is not a good deal. I will still stick to my Rift S for X-Plane/flight simulation. It has a „non-destructive“ regular HDMI video connection to the PC.

    You are entitled to your opinion but my real use experience tells me otherwise. With the advent of the Version 23 update, Users are able to specify the resolution they send to the headset. I am running at 90Hx with a resolution of 4464 x 2256. At the end of the day this site is about quoting real achievable frame rates with good quality stutter free performance. Feel free to stick with your Quest, just be aware that in April it is "end of life" and software updates will likely cease. I think you are out of date with your knowledge my friend

    Thanks for your comment. Regarding the Quest 2 software updates have obviously changed and improved a view things. I bought the Rift S in the beginning of 2020 and had to wait about 5 months for delivery.
