The Konrad Curze Primarch novel was one of the best ones in that whole series. I absolutely loved the way the Emperor showed him that he was wrong all along, and how it recontextualized Curze willingly going to his own death not as his ultimate vindication, but as him accepting death as a just punishment for his failures and crimes.

"The war is over. Win or lose, Horus has doomed us all. Mankind will share its ignorance until the last man or woman draws their last breath. The Warp will always be a cancer in the hearts of all humans. The Imperium It may last a hundred, or a thousand, or ten thousand years. But it will fall. It will fall. Huh. He plays strategy games the same way I do, crush the enemy beneath the weight of infrastructure. Which is why I *suck* at missions with time limits.

I play like this. Which sucks in Total war warhammer when multiple chaos factions start bumrushing you with multiple maxed out armies at once, which then invites everyone else to declare war now that you're occupied and weak. Cathay really comes to mind for this and it's pain

I always play tall rather than wide. So yeah, rapid expansions aren't in my wheelhouse. Though on that front I definitely appreciate the thought of Space Marines and especially Custodes as an elite force instead of pure numbers. The Imperial Guard started as more of a support force after all. I just would've throttled the pace once they started becoming more and more necessary to help out.

Frankly, the biggest problem the Imperium faces is not it's shitty record-keeping (though that is a big one). It's the Adeptus Mechanicus. Between their theology which forbids innovation, their absolute monopoly on the Imperium's tech-base, and their political culture that amounts to a bunch of squabbling narcissists hoarding knowledge to themselves for personal gain, they are almost single-handedly responsible for the Imperium's stagnation and decay. They are the reason that it is so easy to "lose" knowledge, because often only a single world - or even a single Magos - possesses certain technical knowledge, and if that world falls or that one guy is killed? It's gone forever, all because the assholes kept it to themselves as part of their internal jockeying for position and prestige. They are the reason nothing ever gets better in the Imperium, because they refuse to actually try to innovate new solutions, relying instead on the increasingly faint hope that they'll stumble across an STC database and have all the solutions handed to them on a silver platter. And worst of all, no one can challenge their way of doing things. Their legally-mandated monopoly on tech ensures that no independent organization can ever try to fix things either, because they'll just get squashed by the Mechanicus for "Tech-Heresy", all with the full approval of the Imperium.

I started watching this channel a couple dozen fortnights ago around the time of all the Halo stuff, been hangin around for other stuff, now I'm playing Darktide and find it really hard to not watch all these 40k videos popping up the past week or two.

I remember reading in the wiki that some planets have been out of contact with the Imperium for centuries but maintained the tithe system. The problem being they sort of forgot what the tithe was for and instead treat it as a religious event where they sacrifice massive quantities of people and materials by burning them on pyres, sending the ashes into the sky for a half-forgotten god-king.
