    Well done series. Great work. As for Sally Menke...she was the secret sauce in Quentin's films. His movies never recovered from her passing. Recently re-watched Pulp Fiction and some of those cuts are pure perfection. The fight scenes in Kill Bill are cut like music. As an editor myself, I have to tip my hat to her. She had real rhythm and melody in her cutting. One of the greatest editors of all time. Chapeau, Sally. You were the best.

  • @jameshutchinson3672

    I have always maintained that Sally Menke was essential to the tone and incredible totality of his movies: it’s incredibly apparent that everything after IB is missing a certain economy and just kind of feels spiritually different. Given the fact that his films after her passing are still very good it’s hard to imagine how much better they would have been if she was still with us. Editing is often overlooked as one the essential components of filmmaking which is crazy considering how many classic movies were practically created in the editing chair. Take Jaws for example: famously once it had wrapped filming it was in a completely raw and formless state and it was looking like Spielberg had created a disaster. Enter Verna Fields who cut what is at this point a timeless masterpiece. For those interested in the art and craft of film editing I recommend the book “The Conversations” with Walter Murch. It’s incredibly insightful.

    I'm also an editor myself and have always thought exactly like you said. Sally was the best and Tarantino movies are really "other thing" without her. I think Django is the worst of his movies, (still pretty good, but the one I like the least), the first without her. One can't say it's poorly edited, but there are jokes that don't "work" well, and maybe the scenes with loud music really don't get THAT "Tarantinean" cut.

  • @diogeneslantern18
    @diogeneslantern182 жыл бұрын

    It's clear Tarantino takes an INDUSTRIOUS amount of notes when watching films - seeing a scene in another movie that he likes, then deconstructing why he likes it, and what could make it better. Some other channel did the same thing for the coin toss scene in "No Country For Old Men" and it was as if a lightbulb moment went on for me. If I had access to the obscene amount (and more importantly, quality) of information and analysis that the internet provides these days I would have destroyed in highschool and college. Kids do be lazy these days. Edit: I am very glad you included the cuts where the actors said hello to her to make her job easier. Edit edit: Jamie Foxx is a PHENOMENAL actor. A perfect Django.

    I suspect he puts the pop and cultural references into his films because they will get lost in the modern world. So in in the 1990s those reference would have made sense to half the audience and he other half would just be discovering them for the first time. It is just a pity that Tarantino is coming to the end of his career.

    This seems to be backed up by Kurt Russell's quip "Because we all know when you go to work for Quentin, you do it for the money." This career rejuvenation narrative of working with Tarantino was a nifty way to save the studio money.

    Great research and fun to watch! Just some inside info here: Death Proof did not break even theatrically as a studio only sees a maximum of roughly half of the revenues and that’s after deducting P&A (often 1/2 or 1/3 its budget). Other than that, still very informative :)

    These docs are so good! So well researched. I'm a Tarantinofile and you have given a couple bits of trivia even I didn't know. Also, I'm so glad you are going after the Academy Awards for their BS political award ceremonies where they deny that Tarantino IS...and I would absolutely love to hear who anyone thinks matches or is better...the best living auteur in the game. Well done Okolo Kino! Oh...and the voice overs are so silly and wonderful. The Tarantino voice is fine. But I'd be happy to do it properly for you if you make a part 4! Kudos!

    great doc...but, one mistake... that JIM BROWN QT mentioned to Foxx wasn't James Brown the singer..but it was JIM Brown the former football athlete-turned action actor..portrayed by Aldis Hodge, in One Night in Miami. oh, and why the narrator kept saying the name Zoe as "Zo"..? It's "Zo-EE"...you can hear Tarantino even said it in this doc.

    I was lucky to get the invite from a friend who loves movies, got to see it in San Francisco on Quentin's preferred format. One of my favorite movies. Netflix has a version split up into 3 "episodes", which I've watched several times. The breaks punctuate the story arc, making me appreciate the "acts" of the story even more.
