Queerbaiting in K-pop: LGBT representation & fan service for profit [ENG/SPA/IDN CC]

Incorrect representation and staged fan service may harm the artists and the LGBTQ+ community while benefitting the company. How? I explore six tropes of representation: the subtext, the text with capslock, the bittersweet, the tragic, the slapstick, and the male gaze. I also discuss the case of Hong Seokcheon, Jin, Siwon, and Heechul.

After uploading this, I notice that GG are more into gay MV for the male gaze, but BG are expected to act more on stages/shows to feed shippers. Fast forward today, I spoke about how queerbaiting is about the company but not the idol (+ skinship culture) here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqJ4qo-ef8vcds4.html And since BL is getting more popular, a bit about the female gaze and how it may or may not support actual queer people: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kYFhpMqhgc6agZM.html I can't talk about all the issues in one video, hence the series. For a good representation, I love Seori's *_Lovers in the Night_* & *_Dive with You!_* PS. I use bisexual colour scheme because people are often stuck in the straight vs gay narrative, forgetting others that exist in the spectrum. *Bi-erasure* is a thing! Besides, I identify as both bi/pan.

It is true - we often fear what we do not understand which is why I wish to thank you for making this video, and for trying to make your viewers understand what queer baiting is as opposed to queer catching, and what queer coding is. Whew! There are so many terms that we have to learn and understand! But this is a good start and like I said, a good place to open discussions on why we have to actively know what it is we are doing as fans. If we say we truly love our idols, then we have to do what is good for them, and not just do stuff for our pleasure and fun. I also like that you mentioned the desire to reclaim the original spirit of fan service which is idols doing things to make the fans happy. The lines are blurry now as the term "fan service" seem to refer only skinship when it is much more than that. I often wonder what the homoerotic appeal of BTS is and how that started in the first place. Thank you for delving into the past and how Super Junior did excessive skinship to make fans happy only to backpedal (Siwon) and be castigated for doing so. I do not judge him but will judge his (if indeed he is and anyone's) homophobia whether it is internalised or not. In the same breath, I knew I was right for liking Jessi and listening to her. She will not take anyone's crap and even if that is too Western for many Koreans, f*ck it. Sometimes you have to call it as it is so that people actually unlearn ignorant and disgusting mindsets. It is time we educate ourselves, people! And last but not the least, you are right, if we cannot be supportive leave the gay alone. Thankfully your channel is full of JinKook fans who are learning to be accepting (not tolerant) of the LGBTIQA community. And to them I say, thank you. Welcome to this arena. Lastly, how fitting that you dropped this video when the International Day of Action against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is almost upon us which is on May 17. The day that we commemorate globally the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Borahae and thank you once again, Q, for an intelligent video. 💜

@@ellak1884 Thank you for reminding me of the day! What a great coincidence because I didn't make this video with that in mind. I just want to post it this week so that I can move to the fic haha. I think BTS did many fan services during the early days since they're struggling back then. Some of the games in Rookie King are too much for me. Kissing as a punishment for Tae & Hobi, all members wearing feminine clothes... Or maybe it's the TV station's demand because when they moved to Vlive the content changed. Then came the time when people are hooked into BTS because of Taekook. To this day I will always feel sorry for Tae & JK. A quick scan of old Bangtan Bomb comments or old videos makes me understand that they were always pushed to appeal to the public too as they're the most popular. Maybe the company didn't realise that the fandom could get this big and the narrative could get out of hand. I'm happy that they sorted whatever it is between them in In The Soop. Then also came the time when Taejin gained popularity after Blanket Kick, afterwards, we had BST stage. Maybe Jikook are paired more often after GCF Osaka? Though they're always dance partners since the beginning. I don't know. This is all speculation but it still fits well considering what happens in the industry. (In case anyone else read this, I'm not criticising the pair, but I'm criticising the _alleged_ company's strategy.) But today, they don't need these things anymore. I hope they can focus on creating music and simple fanservice; the true fanservice, not the staged one because whether we like it or not it's near the time that they embark on a new path.

@@moonbathingrite oh, I so agree. They are now global artists and BH Music is now international as international can get. I hope they now revisit the old ways of making fans happy and allow BTS to naturally interact with one another instead of falling back into the old narrative of skin ship amongst each other to feed the homoerotic fantasies of the fans. I am ignorant. What was “Blanket Kick” and who was “supposed” to be kissing? Was that Jin and Tae and why were they “kissing” onstage in public? Thanks, Q. Can’t wait for Chapter 4 of CB 😙

@@doriii17 I think Jimin & Tae do enjoy doing fan service the most but only because they love their fans, apart from them being extroverts who love to shower the members with sweet words and affectionate gestures. If you see old Bangtan Bomb videos, you can see that Tae & JK always being playful together, being scolded together because they can't stay still. That's them; very entertaining, much like how Jin & JK always play together today. Back then, before he matured, Tae was very flippant. He's the one who carried the dynamic whenever BTS was invited to variety shows because he's never ashamed to do funny/embarassing things. So, initially, BH paired them because JK was too quiet, while Tae helped him open up. At the same time, they're the youngest and extremely good looking, it's only natural that younger fans gravitate towards them (even now). So, it's a good opportunity there. But now I think it's something that's passed on because it's the biggest ship in BTS. Everyone knows Taekook, even my friend who doesn't listen to BTS literally think that they're a real couple. In this case, it may not be the company's fault but also the fans who made them awkward towards each other.

The corporate-sponsored fanfic competitions are shocking! I mean, I had no idea. It’s highly hypocritical of these entertainment companies to push same-sex shipping yet offer no real world support for LGBT+ issues and rights. I am also bothered watching old variety show tropes like the Pepero challenge, asking which member you would date, etc. It’s fun to see on TV, sure, but if it’s administered by gay-hating hets in a country that has almost no LGBT+ rights then no thank you! Thank you again for your hard work on another enlightening video. It helps shape our understanding while we consume all this media. If anything, I strongly wish (particular fanservice-hungry members of) BTS would stop with the fanservice. BTS are now an international group with fans from various backgrounds who probably don’t have a clue about fanservice culture and might not take time to dig deeper into it. They could take it at face value. Also, they have a huge LGBT+ following. Wouldn’t it be a nice sign of respect for the queerbaiting to hajima? Do you see them stopping or do you think the fanservice too integral to their K-fans? *KZread ate my original comment so I’m typing it out again as I remember it.

Ugh, I don't understand how KZread works. I received a notification about your comment, but I can't see it in the comment section or the "held for review" section. I was surprised, too, when I first read it in an academic journal! Since it's the first-gen, of course, it shaped the whole K-pop culture until today. I truly hope that BTS would stop "babying" ARMY. The members are eight-year-old artists, not struggling rookies anymore. They shouldn't be afraid of losing some just because they won't cater to their needs, queerbaiting or not. However, I do think that their background and how much fans help them achieve things will still affect the pattern of interaction as a way to "giveback;" always feeling like they owe fans something because they're just angels in human forms. So, maybe it's too integral for a different reason, but I'm hoping that I'm wrong.

In the case of fan service, I am generally not comfortable because it makes some fans believe that the actor or artist is a character rather than a human being. However during a discussion I realized that one service that fan service is accomplishing is it is normalizing same sex affection and making it more tolerated and accepted. Which is a crucial step. Playing the ridiculous games like chewing a snack until your lips touch and then leaping apart screaming is bizarre. It is as if the actors or artists are afraid of catching cooties or so disgusted by the accidental contact they lose their ability to cope and behave like rational beings. I respected Jin and V more for declining to kiss on stage, than I would have if they had kissed despite not wanting to do so in public. And good for Suga coughing the paper out of his mouth before he was forced to "kiss" V and transfer the paper.

Yes, it's on GDA 2019 after "So What" on LY tour. I think the request is inspired by their chemistry there. I'm glad that Jin & V know how to define boundaries, though still consider the fans' happiness by constantly doing it until the tour ends or perhaps fans will riot 🤷 But what happens on stage, stays on stage. When fans force to translate it into reality, that could lead to problems like the cases that I mentioned. I don't follow K-pop as much as before, so I don't know if games like the pepero or the paper kiss still popular on reality shows these days. It's so behind the times, like doing slapstick in the age of smart stand up comedy.

Very interesting video. Very well documented ! I personally think it's easier for agencies to let the fans believe that their favorites idols from the same band are dating each other than dating someone else, because in this case the fans have no reason to feel "jealous" and it fits the narrative. To me those fans see it as "if I can't date him, then only their bandmates can". And it creates a lot of content on KZread, fanfics, videos on TikTok/Insta/Twitter... In the same time, I think it would be unfair to qualify everything they say or do as queerbaiting, especially in the case of BTS. In their own way, especially in their lyrics and/or some Vlives when they are alone, they said very subtle things about the LGBT community, not too loud so that it doesn't create some kind of scandal in their career, but clear enough for the fans to understand their point of view. I remember Suga saying that his dating preferences aren't limited to the opposite gender, which to me is a courageous thing to say when you are an idol in South Korea, or even V asking his fans to watch "Call me by your name" saying the message is very important. Those are very tiny things for sure, but those are things said from them as "humans", not as idols, outside of the "official" Big Hit narrative and promo. And I believe that, whatever are their private preferences, they are sincerely trying to start some genuine conversation, for whoever is ready to hear them, starting by their fans. And I hope it can make a difference for other generations, more educated about all of this, in the future. And I feel, that for example, since you talked about him, Jin is not one to accept a lot of fanservice easily. Yes, doing the minimum required, loving the fans, showing how he loves his members are definitely part of it. But I also remember him refusing to kiss Taehyung on TV, or saying in Vlives that he doesn't really do everything his agency asks him to do. In my opinion, BTS becoming worldwide kind of freed them from the usual and classic fanservice and made it easier for them to refuse it now and to talk genuinely about their feelings. It doesn't mean, for sure, that the official editing from Big Hit, in their shows, videos, backstage documentaries, are not still part of queerbaiting. But I kind of differentiate BTS, the 7 members who are confident enough to speak their minds as much as they can, and BTS, the kpop group shown by their agency. Saying all of this, though, doesn't make me naive and I find it very hypocritical of this entertainment industry to literally sell homosexual ships, queerbait people, play with the codes without anyone finding anything to say as long as the idols stay in the closet. This is an industry that forces them to sell a certain image to make money, same image that could make them lose their career if it becomes to real. That's very upsetting and unfair.

That article you speak Of about Suga has been debunked multiple times as a mistranslation. He said himself he said no such thing. The LGBTQ community is constantly pushing their own agenda because how cool if their idols were all gay. It makes them feel like they won something so they misinterpret things and literally buy into every little sarcastic comment or anything at all that could be misconstrued. A lot of these issues are a barrier between cultures and it’s literally ignorant to say that because they dress feminine or flirt with each other they must be gay. I thought we all weren’t supposed to stereotype. I’m not going to think a damn thing until they say themselves

If there is one thing that our love for JinKook has done, it is to open the discussion of LGBTIQA and how queer baiting is so unfair to the community and how this marketing ploy only seeks to make money from this very community. Ratings go up when the sexuality of the characters on TV are made to be ambiguous at the start (they all end in heteronormativity anyway), or in the case of KPop, when fan service occurs. Thanks, Q, for getting on this discussion. I'll comment again later after I watch the video. 💜

It's also cringier when you realise they are close as family, like imagine being shipped with your siblings. I also hate how twitter stans defend their queerbaiting by using the homophobia card. Whenever an idol seen geting close with the opposite sex, fans say they're in their 'straight era' like what? Can't we just support their relationships without the constant need to label them. Homophobia is a serious issue, but this isn't helping.

Fujoshis like me will ship them anyway no matter what, just for fun (but we would keep this to ourselves, not impose this on them). I liked the way they were all close to each others and unafraid of physical contact or "looking gay" like most men in my country. It was very refreshing to see men being vulnerable, free of the confines of toxic masculinity, I thought they were just being themselves. But I don't blame them it's their company/job that demands it.

21:10 - fan service can be executed well or badly,e.g. GOT - Danny and Jon Snow vs MCU: EndGame - Cap America and Thor's hammer. Fan service is generally a good thing. Regarding Jin and Tae's sultry bit at the end of So What, I think that sucked. Jin and Tae were being professional as they did what they practiced and were trained to do and BigHit was doing what they've always done - persue profit. They play into shipping which sucks to me. Idols aren't allowed to openly date or be homosexual, etc. but can play into it for entertainment and profit? These things just feuls the shippers' fantasies and I'm honestly put off and annoyed by Kpop's capitalist tactics to be entertained by this stuff.

Your content is always valuable, rich and actionable whether it’s presented in the form of a blog post, fictional story or a video. I hope you will inspire people to become a better ally and to embody the principle of acceptance without exception. I don’t have much to add on such important and sensitive topic except attitudes in SK are changing and younger people are more open to the idea of multiple modes of sexuality, but that probably has a lot to do with western media rather than k-pop. The reality now is while members are passing a piece of paper to each other with their lips on tv, which often results in "accidental" kiss to the delight of the fans there’s very few rainbow flags during pride month (I personally have seen only one on American embassy). The international fans should know that members almost kissing on stage is a performance played out for the fans to enjoy, not a representation or a real demonstration of homosexual love. Otherwise Heechul didn’t feel the need to re-affirm his masculinity and heterosexuality.

Its a breath of fresh air that you dont focus entirely abt our fave ship but also on whats happening behind the scene of fan service that massively impacts the rainbow community in the korean entertainment culture. This i must say is a bold move but is highly needed and deserves to be shared to the kpop fandom. It opened a lot of doors on realization that fans should be fully aware of. As an advocate of the LGBTQI+, i am grateful that you open up to this issue.ThankYou for sharing this as its very timely for the celebration of International Day against Homophobia,Transphobia and Biphobia. Thank you very much for this educational video. The fact that you actually researched the topic and provided fact based analysis is why you are one of my top analysis channel to visit. Coming from the western world, I don’t understand fan service or skin ship expectations between same sex members in kpop but lord help us if they are lgbtq themselves, then we are disrespecting the artists. I personally don’t get forced fan service that’s very prevalent in BTS. It’s the group I follow in depth over other kpop groups but it’s obvious they are hiding a secret couple by the amount of fan service that’s performed on rotation bassi outside of concerts. Would love to know your thoughts on BTS excessive fan service expectations of the members. Please continue to make more educational videos about jinkook history. If jinkook aren’t a real couple, I might as well quit social media because I’m being closed by Jin and Jungkook on a regular basis.

Tbh I don't quite understand this topic, coz some of the terms are quite heavy for me. But I get your points. I'm raised in a community that doesn't believe in lgbt. I grew up having a thought that men are for women and vice versa. I really didn't understand why same sex relationship even existed back then. People keep saying love is between men and women. But as I grow up, learning things and meeting new people, my thought changed. Love has many colors, it depends on how you embrace the relationship. I no longer find lgbt "abnormal" as people used to say. Love is pure, you can't force it nor you can hide it. I just hope one day people will accept others as they are, not by judging their sexuality

U have no idea how I love ur channel n ur fic noumena. I admit that I first landed to ur videos purely for Jinkook but along the way I start to gain more n more knowledge about sexual spectrums n all the genders. I was in my own bubble world where homosexuality is consider as sin, abnormal or even mentally unstable. That was how we forced to view. And to be honest, I’m always more to a curious type of person who will question everything n maybe sometimes overanalyse some theories/conspiracies which shouldn’t bother me but yeah, I always have soooo many questions to sooo many things, 1 of it is gay community. I’m learning it slowly n start to educating my self to understand more n hell I don’t even know what my self is. I’m married with kid but I mean, having my self exposed to the world outside my bubble bring myself another realisation of my past moments. Maybe things would ended up differently if I wasn’t ‘brain washed’ from the beginning. Lol. Sorry. That’s just my overthink-self speaking. (Pls ignore) Hence, now, for those ppl who r brave enough n to acknowledge what/who they r, 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 for them. N my heart breaks for ppl like jinkook n others who still struggling hiding their identity bcoz the world is watching. I hope more n more ppl will soon get more educated n be open minded. The most important thing is the present because people grow. It's just so frustrating knowing how much society brainwashes us and accepting that not all people will get the opportunity to unlearn the stigma. My past belief is the reason I try to be a better person and share things that I learned with everyone who needs it.

Alright let's talk.. because I feel like you cut me open bare and laid it out on a video. 1. I didn't know about Moon and now I'm disappointed in him. 2. I'm glad you went into the terms because it's important to acknowledge each of the words we use within the community and help allies understand them. 3. Thank you for clarifying that not all representation is healthy or even required. 4. When you said that us queer people are always afraid that the idols we support may be homophobic in reality, I felt that hard. I am still afraid of the Tannies even though they've said they are supportive. Because I implicitly trust them and I don't want their opinion to matter so much to me. 5. I didn't know about Siwon either and I can't even begin to explain how disappointed I am. 6. For me Hee is a unique situation. He was one of the few to really show the fans what was going on and despite it being fan service, I believe his comfort in physical affection with men was not fake. It was exploited by SM for $$$ 7. I love that your goal is to reclaim fan service and I'm with you on that. 8. I know you must have your own ideas about what to do next but I wonder if you will discuss the whole "seokjin gay" "sehun gay" trends that happened (and I'm sure it happened in many fandoms too). But in both cases, fans reacted strongly when seokjin gay and sehun gay trended on twitter because they found it to be 'embarrassing'. The fans who objected to it then said this was 'forcing sexuality on someone' but in both cases, the trends happened for a reason. seokjin gay trended when the article about jin being the choice idol amongst gay men came out. sehun gay trended because sehun talked about how much he loved his male fans. there are many other incidents like this in fandoms. where it becomes queer fans vs non-queer fans. I mean, if this is something that interests you. but this may be going more into the sociology and psychology of fandoms. PS: Thank you for making this video. 💜

Thank you for sharing 💜 I've been thinking about point 8 too! I mentioned a bit about the seokjin gay trend on Ep.05 comment but didn't dig deeper into it. It seems like some fans love to erase any trace of "gayness" when it's not about us forcing anything but at the same time enjoy the fan services?? This also happens in Yoongi's verse and ideal type interview when he said atmosphere matters more. People said that it's a mistranslation but some also said that it's right and they don't understand why people try so hard to bury it like it's the most embarassing thing. As for Sehun, he literally threw so many subtexts to the point that it's impossible for us to not catch them! If there's a theme that fits I'll cover about homophobia within the fandom in the next video.

@@moonbathingrite the Sehun sexuality erasure going on in that fandom frankly scares me. He's said a lot. The only thing left to do is paint a rainbow on his body and dance to a Cabaret song. For them, as long as it's with Junmyeon or Channie, it's 'harmless and dismissable' and that hurts. Which brings me to Baeks.. now he's a whole mess that needs to be unpacked. Every story I hear is borderline non-con and overinflated fan service. It's depressing. But the industry has setup these avenues to exploit idols and changing that will take a long time. I wish the Tannies would do a collab with Holland since I hear that Tae is atleast an acquaintance of his.

I like it when idols give romantic stares to the camera, or say romantic things to their fandom, or say romantic things to the camera, that kind of fanservice would be obvious fantasy, and no one should take it at face value. But then, the idols being encouraged by their companies to act gayest and to have specific gay ships. It's unethical. And I used to think it's all real. Since South Korea is such a conservative country about LGBTQI rights, we would guess that all these homoromantic interactions like idols kissing or saying romantic things is because they are being authentic and brave and risking to get fired. But it's the opposite and they're all expected to act gay by their companies. But then, these companies never actively support homosexual marriage. I'm still a K-Pop fan. But most of the gay/lesbian interactions are not even real and I wish more fans would know this, and I wish I knew this some years ago.

I think I might consider it as a pass when the groups are still rookies and struggling to make a name in the industry. In that case, fan service can be something that saves their career and helps them to survive. Jungkook was literally hanging from the ceiling during BST but all the public cared about was Jin & V's homoerotic ending. The problem with BTS is that they're at the point when they don't need it anymore. I can understand them doing it during Dark & Wild or Wings, but now they're too big for that. This could be one of the reasons the general public is having a hard time considering their artistry.

They just have to imagine it's a woman doing that. I think there are cases like this in the Korean military as well. Still, there's a new progress today: "Under Article 92-6 of the Military Penal Code, homosexuality acts are labelled as sexual assault/harassment and considered punishable by a maximum of two years in prison. However, in April 2022, the Supreme Court ruled that this law cannot be applied to consensual acts that occur outside of military facilities during off-duty hours." www.hrw.org/news/2022/04/25/south-korean-court-limits-military-sodomy-law

I respect hong seok cheon for everything he’s been through. But he portrays the predators stereotype many straight men are afraid of, like he doesn’t want to change the stereotype at all. He crosses many personal boundaries with other celebrities on camera, makes men uncomfortable. Yes, I'm afraid that's the kind of "acceptance" that he gets because South Korea is still progressing 🙁 His roles in drama often revolve around him being gay and when he appears on shows he's often expected to act like the most stereotypical gay man, treating the gayness as a spectacle. As you mentioned, other people in the show will ask, "Who do you think is the most handsome here?" or if it's a guy he'll ask, "Am I your type?" I think the jokes/banters have something to do with K-entertainment culture and the role/persona that a celebrity has to play there, so hopefully, it's discussed first with the other celebrities. I like him better in one cooking show-I forget the name-because he can truly show his passion & talent there.

I speaking from a perspective as an actual gay man... I have no issue at all with fan service or "queerbaiting" I rlly enjoy it and I think it makes physical interactions/affection ( skinship ) to feel more normal amongst men... I just will nvr understand why ppl find it be such a huge issue.... it rlly is not... as long as they are comfortable enough to do it, I don't see why a problem needd's to be brought out of literally nothing... like who cares, just enjoy the show.

@@moonbathingrite they're not going to lose a large profit if they stop "queerbaiting" the lgbt community DOES NOT effect their %'s much at all ( naturally because of how many ppl are a part of )... there are countless groups of idols and actors and mv's/shows (live or not )and movies... that have literally no type of queerbaiting and they completely thrive... if all of it was gone today, there would hardly be a shift in profit at all... and idk why anyone is saying lgbt idols are not supported by their company... one of the last time's that happened was with Hong Seok cheon more than 20 yrs ago... now we have countless idols who r out in public or private amongst close one's within the industry that are supported and are embraced from lesbians, to gays, bisexuals and even trans women... and a decent portion of them are doing well for themselves... and let's not forget that S.Korea EASILY has one of the most growth acceptance over these last two decades...is they're more improvement that can be made sure... but this issue is completely overblown imo... if u change perspective and think maybe this little hints of almost "lgbt representation" is shown, actually helps fasten the society to a more accepting/loving and overall comfortable relationship with community so that is rlly no longer foreign or taboo-ish to them... then it would be much much easier to show backing in conservative country.... so imo I think "queerbaiting" is lowkey doing good than it is doing bad.

@@moonbathingrite anyways to put it simply, I think the issue is overblown, I enjoy the content of same sex skinship and such... and I think "queerbaiting" is actually doing a good thing rather than a bad thing... and the only thing that would change my perspective on that, is if they respresent the community in some way, in a very very ignorant way that makes them look bad.... but they very rarely do that... in fact I think the person who makes the community sometimes looks bad is Hong Seok Cheon ( who for the most part I love his energy ) but ... this sort of perverted air he gives off, usually out of banter when around straight men does not make us look good ) and he's one of US!... lol so... their's good, their's bad... but this issue in my eyes is more positive than it is negative

Even if it comes out that an artist was involved in a gay or lesbian relationship within a same sex group, it can be argued that artificially forcing them into a homosocial situation for years may be why, and that once they are not in the homosocial situation they may actually be straight. Or they may be gay or bi, or any other designation on a very long spectrum. Unless and until the artists choose to self identify (if they do) fans will not know for sure. The artists do not owe it to fans to reveal themselves until such time they desire to. Or not at all.

Dave Disci is one of the good people on KZread, and even though his ship is Taekook, Im sure as someone very open-minded to the topic, I think he's going to be fair. Also, your video isn't about any specific ship, it's about the situation, and I do believe they both should be seen by a lot of the kpop fans because they all need to know these important stuffs going in the industry of Kpop regarding the Lgbt+ community. A personal opinion here: I don't think anyone who accepts/supports the community can judge your videos the wrong way (they are that amazing💜). Again if you don't want, it's completely fine, love. I mentioned this on the previous video, but I like to repeat it again: As a kpop fan and a member of the Lgbtq+, I really want contents as great as yours to spread more around all the kpop fans for more people to see, understand, and support the Lgbtq community within Kpop for until this day, they still live with the fear of exposing themselves and losing their rights.

As I said before both of the videos I believe are needed to be seen by many kpop fans and he has gathered a lot of them together. Don't worry, dear, though. Jin's hair dye, Mang, and JK's mic are there because they all use the bisexual flag colour scheme, so for aesthetic purposes only.
