Queer Eye's Tan France on being a gay Muslim

15 years after the original series debuted, Netflix’s update of Queer Eye, has taken reality TV by storm again, with a brand-new “Fab Five” and an all-new setting: Atlanta, Georgia.
To help celebrate Pride join Bobby Berk (interior design), Karamo Brown (culture), Tan France (fashion), Antoni Porowski (food and wine) and Jonathan Van Ness (grooming) with them & Teen Vogue’s Phillip Picardi for an inside look at a smart, funny, surprisingly moving second season that finds the cast forging relationships with people from a wide array of backgrounds and beliefs. From social commentary to the best recipe for farm-to-table guacamole, Queer Eye simply has it all.

    Activist burn out is real. For someone in the public eye, they become an automatic activist for their community, whether they want to or not. Obviously Queer Eye is more overt than other shows, and it does have a specific message, and an important one. The guys knew what something of what they were getting into. And for people like Tan and Antoni especially, who are shy and not as 'out there' as the others, it was a big brace decision to jump on board the Queer Eye Train. But the sexuality of these guys is just one part of them, and to only concentrate on that is to ignore their abundant gifts, talents and value. If you're an ally, as I am, take it upon yourself to educate others, answer question, and take some of the burden off minority groups.

    @@MM-dq2pi omg the realest thing I've heard in a while. I was getting so irritated at how if someone belonged to the LGBT+ , they're expected to be aware about every little thing about the community and be expressive of their sexuality even if they don't want to. People often just focus on their sexuality and nothing else. But recently when Lilly Singh came out as bi, alot of people, just because they weren't fond of her, resorted to say things like nobody cares anymore, this isn't 2017 and whatnot and that to me is just appalling. Like you supported a group of people that had suffered a history of dehumanisation and discrimination very intensely and then when they were getting a bit of representation, you just disregarded everything? Idk what to call it, sjw or whatever, but that's just amazing to me!

    I honestly feel like people don't consider Tan's situation very well. His experience as a gay person is not the same as someone else experiences for loads of reasons and one of them is because he is POC and Muslim. He's already under a lot of pressure and to tell him that, "He isn't loud enough" or "he should give those people his time of day" kinda excludes those other parts of him. He's already being looked upon and scrutinized for being a POC and Muslim. Try to consider where he is coming from in terms of representation and having to work twice as hard for little credit. Anyway, he's amazing and that was an awesome answer

    Man of steel while I agree that most religions have a problem with lgbtq+ I think everyone mostly links this to Islam for many reasons. But I think that it’s mostly linked to the cultures of middle eastern and south Asian countries. There are a lot of beautiful aspects of the cultures there, but one thing that is not as good is their fear of “what will everyone say”? They have this fear that homosexuality, unholy matrimony etc will bring shame on their families. In those countries status, and reputation is very important. I don’t think that the families would have such a big problem if it weren’t for the irrational fears that is ingrained in those countries. It is also the extremely tight family bonds that is found there that can be a curse or a blessing. It’s a curse when someone is “different” and puts their reputation at risk and so everyone might get ostracised completely That said, there are also other religions in those regions that are very religious like the Christians and coming out is also a big deal there. I mean Russia and the USA both have problems with accepting lgbtq. If I’m correct, there is still a lot gay conversion therapy going on in the USA. This is my take on it at least

    It would be absolutely difficult following a religion in which the main sacred text implores you to kill, crucify, decapitate the limbs of and tax at 20% Jews, Christians, polytheists, gays and pretty much anyone that isn't Muslim. The reason he doesn't want to talk about it is because the values of Mohammed and the Quran are completely against everything gay liberal culture and basic humanity represents. I say this as someone who has read the Quran cover to cover and we won't ever be fully able to address this shit until we all start calling a spade a spade and call out the Quran as being the OG Mein Kampf disguised as religion.

    Why is it that a gay person who becomes well known is pressured to become political and have to share their private thoughts or opinions too? I wish the activist types would stop thinking that all have to be strident zealots 24/7. Don't you realise that gentle, genuine, spiritual and caring gay folks also help wave the gay flag too. They lead by example and that message is way more powerful in the long run.

    Tan is so right, he doesn't need to address issues that affect his community if he doesn't want to. At times we expect every public figure that falls in these minority spaces to be the spoke's person/ ambassador and that's not right. It should be up to the person to decide if they want to take a stance or not, not us. Being in his position as a non public figure is difficult, now imagine having to live that life and represent more people. That's hard! If the rest of the world wants to know more about a specific community they should take it upon themselves to educate themselves, not hold anyone accountable for not advocating.

I am very sorry you are in that situation, and I hope you’re able to get out soon. I think we need to talk about ex-Muslims in situations that we can in order to normalize apostasy. being a bi muslim girl myself his internal struggles hit close to my heart. i understand tan's hesitancy in speaking out and trying to find a safe space to speak out. being in a super, super conservative country the public's main response to lgbtq+ community is "well you're not saying anything back so it's your fault that the queer community in this country is silenced!" it's SO FUCKING DIFFICULT to speak up when you're raised in a country that is majority muslim, majority asian still with a collectivist mindset. there is almost zero safe space for you to fully express yourself. once you speak up, you're forcing yourself out of the closet and whether you like it or not, you're putting a distance between yourself and the community. and in a collectivist community, you're either following WITH them or against them. you can't be different AND still exist within a community.

    As a straight Muslim I've always felt so bad for the struggles of gay muslims out there who have to hide or be ashamed of who they are. Have hope in the fact that you can have a Quranic interpretation of homosexuality not being sinful and that God wouldn't make you one way and then tell you not to be like that. For further information on this topic I suggest looking at organisations like Muslims for Progressive Values and Quranists online.

  • @AA123TD

    @AA123TD

    The Quran states that Allah destroyed the city and people of Lut because of homosexuality. It is very clear about it. I am an asexual Muslim. I still carry on with my married life. There is more to life than sex and it is the homosexual tendencies that are a test for them in this world. Just like it is a test for a married person to desire/love someone else. They sacrifice their selfish desires for the sake of the family/community. Gay people do not have a monopoly on sex life issues. Also to think that homosexuality will not harm anyone, I beg to differ. The shift in western society regarding embracing homosexuals will change society as a whole. Most gay couples do not have children. They work for themselves with 2 incomes, many high paying. There is a gentrification that happens where a lot of gay people live. Less children will be born or women will start selling their uterus. This will raise the costs of items because there will be less sold. Supply and demand. Many heterosexual couples with children will begin to be pushed out of areas because they can't afford to live in locations where many gay people live. San Francisco, D.C., Manhattan, uptown Dallas, Rhode Island and Boston. Heterosexuals will opt out of having children for financial reasons, population decline, civilization declines. The foundation of society is the family. This sudden shift in society will affect everyone.

  • @Hoppelpinguin

    @Hoppelpinguin

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@AA123TD Many gay couples would LOVE to have children (Tan for example said he wants six), but it's much harder for them and way more expensive. In a lot of countries they aren't even allowed to adopt, even though many would want to. If you want children or not, has nothing to do with sexuality. On top of that, the planet is pretty darn overpopulated to a point where to population is growing so fast, that we have to worry about the global food supply. Do you know how many orphans there are? A lack of children is not the problem here. As asexuals we belong to the LGBT community too, but that does not mean you understand what you're talking about. So you married someone of the opposite sex and sleep with them less than another person would. Big deal. But for a gay person to be in a relationship like that would be torture. And for what? Words in a book? I'd much rather be the child of a happy/content gay couple, than a "straight" couple with one of my parents hating the life they have to lead. I've lived in several gentrified areas and the absolute majority of people there were middle-aged people with high-paying jobs, young professionals and young families. Also...even in cities with a high gay population, the percentage almost never reaches 5%. This is the 21st century. If you want to justify your hatred, you have to work harder.

    The rules of homosexuality in Islam is clear. We can't make something Haram, and turn it into something Halal. The whole point of Islam is fighting the Nafs (the self). The second you disagree, you have left the struggle and submission. I'm a human, I have desires, and I don't act on them for the sake of Allah. And yeah no one said you're not equal to any other man on earth, but there are different levels of Iman. When a girl walks up to me and say hey you're cute can I have your number? It's not easy saying no sorry this is not right, but I do it to fight my own desires. Some people's struggles are harder than others, but believing in Allah is believing Allah will never give you a task you cannot handle and/or praying he makes it easier on us.

When he said to his people, ‘Do you commit Al‑Faahishah (evil, great sin, every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse, sodomy) while you see (one another doing evil without any screen) Do you practise your lusts on men instead of women? Nay, but you are a people who behave senselessly.’ There was no other answer given by his people except that they said: ‘Drive out the family of Loot (Lot) from your city. Verily, these are men who want to be clean and pure!’ So We saved him and his family, except his wife. We destined her to be of those who remained behind. And We rained down on them a rain (of stones). So evil was the rain of those who were warned” [al-Naml 27:54-58 - interpretation of the meaning] These verses refer to the punishment that befell the people of Loot. With regard to the rulings on them: F - Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning]: “And the two persons (man and woman) among you who commit illegal sexual intercourse, hurt them both. And if they repent (promise Allaah that they will never repeat, i.e. commit illegal sexual intercourse and other similar sins) and do righteous good deeds, leave them alone. Surely, Allaah is Ever All-Forgiving (the One Who forgives and accepts repentance), (and He is) Most Merciful” [al-Nisa’ 4:16] Ibn Katheer said: “The words of Allaah ‘And the two persons (man and woman) among you who commit illegal sexual intercourse, hurt them both’ mean, those who commit immoral actions, punish them both. Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him), Sa’eed ibn Jubayr and others said: By condemning them, shaming them and hitting them with shoes. This was the ruling until Allaah abrogated it and replaced it with whipping and stoning. ‘Ikrimah, ‘Ata, al-Hasan and ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Katheer said: This was revealed concerning a man and woman who commit fornication. Al-Saddi said, it was revealed concerning young people before they get married. Mujaahid said: it was revealed concerning two men if they admit it bluntly; a hint is not sufficient - as if he was referring to homosexuality. And Allaah knows best.” (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 1/463). G - It was narrated that Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘There is nothing I fear for my ummah more than the deed of the people of Loot.’” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1457; Ibn Maajah, 2563. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 1552). H - It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “… cursed is the one who has intercourse with an animal, cursed is the one who does the action of the people of Loot.” (Narrated by Ahmad, 1878. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 5891). I - It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever you find doing the deed of the people of Loot, kill the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1456; Abu Dawood, 4462; Ibn Maajah, 2561. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 6589). And Allaah knows best.

He doesn’t Owe Anyone to talk about himself. I just hope Tan can remain true to himself despite people pressuring him to retell all!

    I’m confused, sentiment aside, who is he addressing? Is he saying that he feels obliged to rehabilitate his humanity with bigoted Pakistanis (which, according to his experience, is very hard) or that they should acknowledge his equality or that he is reluctant to evangelise but feels compelled to educate the community from which he came? Re first issue, as a famous personality, I doubt very much whether he needs to and re second point, what kind of equality is he seeking from fellow Muslims? It’s a strange quarter to go to for equality. I think we should all consider what claim making is going on before reaching a swift judgement about how heroic someone is.
