Queensland University of Technology (QUT) REVIEW [An Unbiased Review by Choosing Your Uni]

Nestled right between the Brisbane CBD, Botanic Gardens and Brisbane River is QUT - the Queensland University of Technology.
I've admired this university for the past decade or so as it has continued to evolve into a seriously good university.
In this episode, I'll take you for a walk through QUT's main Gardens Point campus.
We'll talk about what makes the university tick, how it ranks, and what kinds of students are most likely to get the most out of studying here.
By the end of this video you should have a better idea of whether or not QUT is the university for you!
Without wanting to give too much away, I think this university is "on the rise".
It's an institution that has managed to get seriously organised in many ways and that has really focused on creating a "real world" student experience.
Let's take a walk around!

I'm highly considering applying for the exchange program at my uni, currently studying in England at Sheffield Hallam and Queensland is one of the options that I have if I was to apply, so this video has really helped me get a better understanding of what it's like since I've never been to Australia before. I've been going through my options, and I'm down to QUT and UQ. As I see in the video here, apparently QUT is more practical than UQ. What are your opinions on this, or which uni would you go to if you had to choose? Thank you!

Hi Natalia, I love Brisbane. My favourite city for students at the moment - great lifestyle and the city has so much going on! You’re looking at two great unis. Both have strengths, one (UQ) with research strength and reputation, the other with a reputation for strong industry linkages and practical teaching. Both unis are EQUIS accredited, so education quality is strong. For campus life, I’d probably pick UQ. I love the campus and there’s just SO MUCH going on. However, if the academic program at QUT interested me more (eg if the subjects interested me more), I wouldn’t hesitate to choose it over UQ either.

Personally I’d be choosing QUT because I love Brisbane as a city. Cost of living is lower and the climate is great. QUT has great industry linkages and applied programs. The positive for UC is that it’s a uni that has really improved enormously in recent years - I believe it is the Australian uni that has progressed the most in global rankings in the past few years. Canberra is quiet and clean, cold in the winter. I love it. It is also where many companies servicing Governemnt are located, so if that’s an interest to you it might be a good option.

Nursing is an accredited degree. What that means is that every degree needs to comply with Australian nursing standards for education. As a result, nursing degrees tends to be similar between institutions because they are obliged to cover much of the same content. That’s not to say there aren’t differences, there are certainly differences in terms of facilities, class, delivery class, sizes, student satisfaction and social opportunities, but overall, from an academic point of view, the content being delivered will be similar.

  • @ChoosingYourUni

Both good architecture programs. I don't think either one is "more friendly" than the other - there are good and bad people everywhere! It all depends on trying to meet as many people as possible. QUT considered more "real world" and practical, and UQ more research focused as an institution. But in terms of getting a job, you should be able to compare the two universities on compared.edu.au to see how they stack up in that regard.

Hey, Fiona. I eventually enrolled in QUT because, for architecture, UQ is more theory-based while QUT is more practical. Plus, QUT has a legitimate workshop for architecture and related majors to craft their models. Regarding job opportunities, I haven't graduated yet, so I wouldn't know. However, I did hear from a friend who graduated from UQ in architecture. During her interview, the interviewer said she would rather hire someone from QUT than from UQ. For all these reasons, I chose QUT in the end.

For me, Asian business and sustainable business stand out at Griffith, whereas innovation and entrepreneurship, and advertising pop at QUT. I must say, I was blown away by the facilities at QUT Kelvin Grove when I visited a few months back - definitely feels like they've invested a lot in the student experience there. If it were me (and for clarity, my interests in business are digital marketing, entrepreneurship, innovation and management), I'd probably choose QUT.

Hey rob I'm trying to decide between the University of Queensland (UQ) and the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) for my Software Engineering degree, and I'm looking at factors like education quality, support services, and the social scene. When it comes to education, I've heard that UQ is renowned for its strong academic programs, and QUT has a more practical, industry-focused approach. Any insights or experiences from those in the field would be greatly appreciated. However, it's not all about the classroom for me. I'm a pretty outgoing person and want to have a vibrant social life during my university years. Can anyone share their thoughts on the social scene at UQ and QUT? Just because your friend feels that way doesn't mean it's actually true. Every university in Australia has thorough systems and processes in place for assessing students, as well as appeals mechanisms if a student feels they have been mistreated. There are also mechanisms for students to complain, anonymously if required, about other students or staff if they feel they have been mistreated. Discrimination is taken EXTREMELY seriously by the Australian universities. There are legal mechanisms in place to prevent and respond to discrimination. Now that's not to say that your friend hasn't experienced discrimination or racism. Unfortunately Australia is like everywhere else on Earth - you can find narrow-minded, racist fuckwits that belong in a gulag everywhere. But if your friend feels this way, they should definitely complain about the behaviour. It will be investigated and not be tolerated. Our modern society (i.e. post European arrivals) is based 100% on immigration. 30% of people in the major capitals speak a language other than English at home. We're multicultural at our heart, so don't let a few bad apples give the impression that the tree is rotten.

It normally should only take a few weeks but depends on the university. If you’ve applied through an agent they should be able to give you some good advice about timeframes. Otherwise the uni should be able to give you an indication if you applied directly.

I was at a government briefing on future hiring trends and a QUT representative was present arguing how they needed to remove the government student fee cap on courses so they could charge students more and provide an even better service. This man represented an organisation/industry that: - Has consistently raised university fees by 5% every single year while delivering the same service/product. - Is listed as "tax exempt charitable organisations" (dont pay tax and take donations despite making record multi-million profits) by the ATO. - Sit on vast amounts of acres of prime real-estate. - Enjoy vast amounts of government funded support. - Have put an entire generation in a ridiculous amount of debt in return for degrees in many instances even corporate Australia dont really value. - Have their student income basically guaranteed by the countrys taxpayers/state, and who are left to deal with the loans/defaults. And this representative had the gall to suggest Australian Universities needed more money (student debt) to deliver an adequate service...It made my blood boil.

I agree. That's terrible. I wouldn't assume that the representative was officially speaking for QUT on this issue, but I agree that subsidised higher education is a critical element of civilised society. Universities are at risk of becoming obsolete if they charge huge fees for information/knowledge that is accessible for free (in many ways) via the internet. As you rightly point out - what's the value add? Where is the "product/service" evolving? Institutions' commitment to work integrated learning, overseas study opportunities, leadership and employability development will become ever more critical in the years to come imho Just plonking the courses online and charging a slightly lower fee won't cut it when the biggest players (think: Ivy League in the USA) are putting some many of their courses online for free (or almost free).

@@ChoosingYourUni Thank you for your reply, and I agree with your above statements. This occurred a few years ago but the individual did indeed present himself as a Sr QUT employee, which is what me (and others) felt was so infuriating. I feel Australia's Universities have become more about money and status than they are about being educational institutions. They are becoming an expensive and unnecessary middle-man tax, much like we see the insurance industry has become to America's healthcare system. Since when did sharing basic information become so expensive and why? Their greed will eventually see them become the engineers of their own demise.

@@tovsteh "Have put an entire generation in a ridiculous amount of debt in return for degrees in many instances even corporate Australia dont really value." Is that really true? This report says on page 13, that the fulltime employment rate of QUT after 3 years is 97.2%. Higher up are Macquarie with 97.3%, and La Trobe with 97.9%. All of them are more practically oriented. Do you think that those are better? The report: www.qilt.edu.au/docs/default-source/gos-reports/2020-gos-l/2020-gos-l-national-report.pdf Edit: Oh, now I get it. You might find a job, but the salary is lower, right? So you really need a theoretical degree for a good salary.

  • @tovsteh

    @tovsteh

@@IroAppe The claim of full-time employment is misleading because it does not take into account whether or not students got a job in their field of study (or anything even remotely relevant), if they got a job that which salary is worth the educational investment, or if their degree was of value to the current market at all etc etc. You could come out of QUT with a degree and still end up working full-time at Coles with a student loan: thats not good statistics. I work in recruitment, and business, arts and social sciences degrees are basically perceived as useless/insignificant. Universities market themselves as "the gatekeepers" (a necessity to enter the job market) whereas the majority of people we see, particularly in tech, are self-educated/trained/took on opportunities offered within a business as they grew in their roles. In addition, Universities have consistently been increasing their tuition fees while at the same time no offering any additional value, and putting more and more content for online consumption. Im not calling getting a degree useless, but im questioning the ethics of Universities becoming businesses (not focused on being educational institutions) that oversell degrees to future generation with no regard for market demand of skillsets and what the increase levels of student debt is doing to generations to come. I have also had personal experiences with QUT where I have been lied to, where they have ignored their own internal policies and process (as stated on their own website by their *finance manager* who also reviewed my case ) and had to take my cases to the ombudsman (!) to receive any just treatment and remind them of *their own* policies. The level of greed and unethical behaviour was despicable.

@@tovsteh Alright, yes, that's what I got from the many reviews about Australian Universities. That they are basically pure businesses now, trying to get as much money from us students as possible while saving where they can. But I still want (have) to study in Australia, so I have to swallow one pill. Not sure which one yet. I am currently studying IT in Germany and am planning to get a master degree in Australia, to find a job there afterwards.

Well picked up. I’m glad you picked up on the similar feel and formatting. A consistent format is important if people are to “compare” unis. The concept behind these reviews is having a consistent presentation of all of the unis in Australia to help them choose, without feeling like it’s marketing content put out by the u I itself. I’ve done 32 reviews (give or take) of 40 Oz unis. I’d call that useful for most people making a choice. Glad you picked up on my ability to bs for 12 mins straight too. It took me decades to perfect that skill and you’re the first person to compliment me on it, so thanks! 🙏
