Queen Victoria At Kensington Palace With Lucy Worsley
'Queen Victoria At Kensington Palace With Lucy Worsley'
BAFTA winning historian and Joint Chief Curator of Historic Royal Palaces Lucy Worsley takes Dan Snow on a tour of Kensington Palace, one of the principle royal residences since 1689. It was the childhood home of Queen Victoria, who was born on the 24 May 1819.
The rooms of the royal residence were renovated for an exhibition which opened to the public on the 200th anniversary of Victoria's birth.
So how did the young Victoria spend her time at Kensington Palace? And where was she at the moment she was declared queen?

I love how Lucy gives the social context - putting these historical figures in the world they actually lived in, not our current world. I’m reading her biography of Jane Austen now and I can’t wait to reread her novels now with a better understanding of Jane Austens world.
What a mixture - an incisive questioner in Dan Snow and a remarkably articulate Lucy Worsley. The best.
I listened to Lucy talk about Queen Caroline at St Mary’s College Calne recently, it was awesome! She said that Caroline is her favourite Queen, and fun fact, when I asked if she had a least favourite Queen (some historians hate Elizabeth I or Victoria etc)… she replied “the White Witch of Narnia”

She is absolutely brilliant. You can see her mind constructing elaborate tapestries of knowledge before she distills it all into a response that educates and guides people toward what her research has uncovered. She is a master teacher.

And the best part is that this master teacher won't sell her pupils a bunch of bunk. I think it is so confidence inspiring that she busts many of the traditional myths--like the "love at first sight" meeting with Albert. She researches until she finds substantial validation ("skewers it" in her words) for the facts like the hand holding while going down the steep stairs.
What a combo; Dan Snow and Lucy Worsley… Thank you! So appreciate you both.

Anything presented by Lucy is always a joy. She could do a special on egg cartons and it would be a delight to watch.
It’s so nice to hear a British historian mention directly the shortcomings of royals. So many people tiptoe around any possible negativity about the British empire or the monarchy it can be so uncomfortable. Lucy bringing up an unflattering quote or be honest about politics makes my ears ring (in a refreshing way)

RIP Queen Elizabeth II 🌹💕🇬🇧 Just like Queen Victoria, a long reign and a time in history when people realized that their deaths are a end of an era.
Just watched her Jane Austen house video last night and assumed this was recommended to me because of that. Now I see it's a brand new upload! How serendipitous. 💫 Absolutely love Lucy, I'd listen to her talk about anything!
I love Lucy Worsley I've been listening to her for years
So nice to see Lucy responding to questions she’s interested in during a casual conversation. Rather than when she’s presenting more formally (which I also like).
When Lucy is describing Victoria as the perfect monarch of the 19th century, it’s almost identical to the way Elizabeth II will be described, in my opinion (whether she was or not).

I am addicted to Lucy. She is so cute!
I love Lucy! Her special called "Victoria and Albert: The Royal Wedding" is absolutely smashing fun. You can't help but be fascinated by Victoria; the woman was quite remarkable, yet so very fragile. This was a woman who loathed pregnancy and babies while enjoying every part of making them. A woman who railed at the idea of losing one's sense of self and power to a man but loved having a strong, dominating man in her life to put her in her place. A woman who was jealous of her own children taking their fathers time, and being envious if they dared to like, let alone love each other.... What's not to enjoy learning about? She was quite the little character, ha!
Growing up in London we used to call what was described as the lake in front of Kensington Palace the round pond. A few winters we were able to ice skate on it in the 1950’s.
Lucy is so interesting, i love her stories!
OMG FINALLY NEW LUCY! She is so cute and smart at history stuff. 💖
Dr. Lucy should auction off an hour or two of a personally guided tour (in person or virtual) of a British historical location of choice. Funds could go to whichever non-profit associated with Dr. Lucy at the time. Her little anecdotes as she walks throughout locations are even better than her scripted broadcasts…and I rate those quite high already.
Love watching any program that Lucy hosts!
This is great haven't seen a recent Lucy Worsley video in a few years 😀 thank you so much 4 this
A superb storyteller😊
LOL, "the Death Star isn't ruled over by little old lady in a bonnet!" Thanks, Lucy!
as an architect, I am blown away by the pair of stairs at the end of the video. there just doesn't seem to be enough depth to the stringer to support the stair for the length of the run. and I am sure that there is stone treads and risers. would like to see how they are constructed.
@robbannstrom
Жыл бұрын
As a non-architect, I must say I was fascinated also by the very same thing. At times, my eyes were trying to "fill in the gap" with the back wall but no - as the camera moves, one can see the very striking thinness/lack of vertical depth of the stair and one concludes that there's more than wood holding it up. It is, after all, called the Stone Stairs...
I can never get enough of Lucy. Dans not bad either.
I like how she totally bypassed his question about what kind of mother she was. She was a Monster to all her children.

Actually she wasn’t. In fact it came out about a year ago that Victoria had left so many diaries, that most historians have not read through all of them. It turns out that much of what we have been told about Victoria’s parenting actually came from the snarky snippets when she was having a hard time with her children. Historians are now going back in and reading her diaries and finding out that she was actually quite a loving and devoted mother, but that many male historians pulled out just the snarky tidbits when she was tired and frustrated with her children! Also, Victoria loved sex, she just didn’t like being pregnant! It caused her to put on so much weight, as she was small in stature, and it also slowed down her capacity to exercise. She has been quite an avid horse woman and exercise walk her, but the medical thought of that day was that a pregnant woman should not exercise, hence, she gained so much weight.
