I remember hearing this for the first time as an eight year old, jumping around my bedroom and acting like I was singing it live in concert, pretending to be Freddie, singing into a pencil like it was a microphone. I still feel like that eight year old kid every single time I hear this. Queen became my favorite band that year. Now in 2020? Yeah, they are still my favorite band. There will never be another Queen.

Wow, just wow!!! Was there anything Queen couldn't do well??! I think no......actually i know no. LOL. I was not a Queen groupie growing up but knew their bigger hits like We Will Rock You. I have fallen in love with their music since seeing Bohemian Rhapsody (no eye rolls please :) ) and their music is all I want to listen to now. I started making my tour through their albums from the beginning and of course, cannot skip over Flash Gordon. Some songs i like more than others but there is absolutely NO bad song on any album. I continue to be in awe of them - to this day it is unparalleled and IMHO, no band living or dead compares to their incredible talent, amazing concert performances and especially Freddie's phenomenal voice, dynamic showmanship and mesmerizing stage presence!!

Half the tunes from this movie set would've been hits had they been released on other Queen albums, like this one. Queen had so many great songs that they also had a bunch of overlooked gems. If Queen's 2nd tier songs had been recorded by any other band, they'd have been heralded as colossal successes. Album for album, Queen was one of the most consistent bands for great songwriting; really miss their self-imposed quest for perfection.

Brian slays on the guitar here! I don't think Brian gets nearly enough credit for not only being a great writer, but a great guitar player. His style is instantly recognizable. I think part of the issue is that he had so many great contemporaries such as Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, etc. Yet, he rules! The rhythm section here is also quite good. Hearing Freddie sing, it does remind of how he sang on Queen I and II. Either way, amazing song that is underrated.

You have to remember back in 1982 (I was 17-18 yrs old and had seen Queen live 8 times going back to News of the World Tour [once]; Jazz Tour [twice]; The Games Your [4xs]; soon to be 12x after their Hot Space Tour came thru So.Calif. in Sept. of 1982) most of Queen's fan base came from 7 studio albums in the 1970s and only 1 other one in the 80s.. so Hot Space though I like quite a few songs was too much of a departure too quickly. But he'll, I couldn't fault them, they had to keep themselves interested first and foremost and being a Queen fan since the mid-70s I had grown accustomed to album releases that were off the wall or had a song that had that WOW factor....this went farther than that though.

My speakers have 15" woofers and I'd play The Hero at home. 1930s, double brick, 15' walls. Solid as a rock. The explosion at the end of the song would shake the walls. I kid you not.

Just watched the Flash Gordon movie again (at least 15 years since I've seen it ) and the scene where the Hawkmen fly out of the clouds to attack Warrocket Ajax with this song swelling in the background gave me goosebumps. The fanfare with the A D A riff chugging in the background. Brian Fricken Blessed chewing every piece of scenery. This is how to make a comic book movie. this is how to make ANY movie.

I played my copy of this album to death. The monotone tape recorder I played all my tapes on, chewed it up several times, and once it got chewed so badly I had to cut the mangled bit out and splice it back together with a bit of tape. Listening to this I can still hear in my head, the bit where I did the edit: the music goes wonky for a few seconds then rights itself for the finale. Happy days.

I love this song. I wish they’d made a 45 single mix in Rock song form for Rock radio. I always thought it sounded too patched up and the song’s continuity gets lost in the theatricals and segues. However this is definitely one of the hardest songs in their repertoire.
