This version was not mixed the same way as the released version, but Mercury's vocals are really strong in the early part, as you noticed. THANK YOU for posting this.

Freddie always kills it, and this is in my top five Queen songs. It's a strong alternate lead vocal but I can see why he and the band chose the take they released. It has more upper register moments that take the song to the highest heights. As for other great rock vocalists, Chris Cornell is amazing.

Fantastic analysis. I’m a die-hard Queen fan since the beginning. Not a fan of Adam Lambert, either. Freddie was definitely the greatest, and Brian May deserves props. But, you can’t ignore the solid baselines of John Deacon or the masterful fills by drummer Roger Taylor. My personal favorite song, showcasing Freddie’s vocals, is “One Year of Love”, written by John Deacon. One of the eight songs that Queen did for the soundtrack of the movie Highlander. Early versions..., demo versions... alternative version.... all of Queen’s and Freddie’s stuff are amazing!! “All dead, all dead”... with Freddie version, “Stealin’ 12 minutes sesión.., “Dreamers Ball”, or “Who needs you”... all of that are very hidden gems ready to discover!!! Thanks for your reaction..!! 👍🏻👍🏻✅✅🥰🌸❤️

Really enjoyed your comments. I love all these alternate versions, especially if there is any dialogue with the band included. This track was written in I believe 1977 & that might account for the engineering issues you describe as the technology was obviously very different. I saw an interview recently where they discussed how they would try many different versions of a song & Freddie joked, “yea well you don’t have to sing all of them!”

  • @marytamone5095

Your command over the English language is also impressive. I have loved Queen since about 1977 and love all four of them. Freddie holds a special place for me because with him always trying for perfection truly earned it most of the time. Not to mention Bei, John and Roger who all wrote excellent songs and were better than some thought they were. The four of them together were just perfection.

Yeah Brian gets too little love, people claim his "Skill" is all in his Red Special home build guitar (I've seen some Prog agings hipsters says his guitar is all tricks, they've obviously never seen him live or tried to play a Red special replica). He DOES get respect from actual guitarists. Folks like Satriani have love for him and his skills.

Yeah - Brian all the way -- I hate it when people today criticize he and Roger for "moving on" - OMG - I loved Freddie, too - there will never be another like him -- but musicians gotta "mus-ish" if you know what I mean - it's not disrespectful to continue your playing/writing/performing even though you've lost a great member of your band... it's what you do!

Though you are not a fan of Adam Lambert, I will give you my analysis. Saw Queen twice in 74 and 81. I am now 62 years old and knew if I didn't get off my dead ass I would never again see Brian May's genius. Saw them in Pittsburgh this summer. So glad I did . Brian blew us a way with a nine minute solo. Funny but for years whenever I play queen I point my finger and cue Brian, found myself doing that at the concert also. Adam Lambert is amazingly humble and respectful of Freddie and Queen fans. Can you imagine the thought of stepping into Freddie's shoes. I thank him because if it were not for him Queen would not be touringand I would have never seen Bri and Roger again.

I loved your analysis and this version of one of my favorites. I hope you will explore the Queen II album. It has many really outstanding tracks but for contrast, White Queen written by Brian May and The March of the Black Queen written by Freddie are really stunning. Also from the 1974 Sheer Heart Attack album, Stone Cold Crazy has been called the first thrash metal song. Brian May's riff in this one is outstanding and so is Freddie's amazing vocal.
