QUEEN interview PAUL PRENTER (Munich 1984-09-16)

Музыка

Date : 1984-09-16
Location : Munich/ München
Venue : Olympiahalle
Paul Prenter , in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody he is known as the villian who betrayed Freddie Mercury. In the movie Paul Prenter is played by Allen Leech.
Here is a rare interview Paul Prenter did in Munich 1984 prior to the Queen concert at the Olympiahalle.
In real life, Prenter was a radio DJ from Belfast, Northern Ireland who eventually met and became involved - both personally and professionally - with Mercury. Prenter first met Mercury at a bar in 1975, according to The Belfast Telegraph, and then became his manager in 1977. At some point during this time, Prenter and Mercury had a sexual relationship - which is something Prenter later allegedly used to blackmail Mercury, who wasn't technically out of the closet at the time. Their business relationship was thought to be largely positive for about the first five years of Prenter working for Mercury, but things started to head south in 1982, according to Metro UK.
Prenter is not known to have gotten along well with any of Queen's other members, and their fractured relationship reportedly came to a head with the release of the band's 1982 album Hot Space. According to Metro UK, band members Brian May and Roger Taylor disliked the record's sound and blamed Prenter's influence for it coming out the way it did. Still, Prenter remained in Mercury's employ for several more years.
In the film, Mercury finally fires Prenter in 1985, with the main reason being that the manager failed to inform Mercury about the opportunity for Queen to perform at the now-iconic Live Aid concert. In retaliation, the jilted Prenter then gives a television interview where he outs Mercury. In reality, Prenter was fired the following year, after the Live Aid concert, according to the Belfast Telegraph. As for Prenter's most well-known "villainous" moment, he didn't actually give a TV interview outing Mercury. Instead, he sold a story to The Sun tabloid in 1987 where he revealed Mercury's sexuality, and also outed the singer's relationship with Jim Hutton, much to Mercury's chagrin, according to Slate.
So the movie mixes up some facts regarding Prenter, possibly making him out to be more of a villain than he was in real life. But unfortunately for him, he won't be able to tell his side of the story. That's because Paul Prenter died in 1991 due to complications from AIDS, per The Belfast Telegraph. Coincidentally, that's the same year the disease took the life of Mercury.
All movies need a villain, and that includes biopics. Paul Prenter is presented as the bad guy in Bohemian Rhapsody, but having worked as Freddie Mercury's manager for nearly a decade, it's hard to believe that all of those years were as contentious as the film shows. Prenter is gone now, but his legacy lives on in the new film. It just may not be the legacy he wanted.

Check out Allen Leech in Downton Abbey, where he plays the opposite kind of role, a romantic , noble, loveable chauffeur who adores one of the Crawley sisters and ends up marrying Sybil. His Irish accent is authentic. He's Irish. He's a fine, fine actor. Interesting to see him playing a manipulative crreep.

Rock'n Roller can't just be chained up or tied to the bed from the age of 60 with the words: "At 60, one must now think of retirement and go ultra grandpa!" There are other golden oldies: Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper. The list can be extended at will by anyone. Take the mic away from Alice Cooper and he's hitting the golf club. Rod Steward has his show in Las Vegas. Eighty year olds are the new 60 year olds today. My client is more agile at 87 than I am in my mid-40's. He rides his bike 2 to 5 kilometers in all weathers, walks 2 kilometers around the village, and his favorite clothes are his dark sweater and modern style pants that he bought sometime in England. The man rocks the store even today at 87 years old. He is also a hobby gardener and loves his 500 square meter vegetable garden. Whether I could rock this with 87 years also still? Goodness gracious me it pinches now already in some body parts and notice I'm getting more and more immobile. Let the golden oldies rock, most young singers can not sing anyway.

Paul was a manipulative POS that deserved nothing in his life. It’s so funny to hear him say that Mick Jagger will not be able to run around stage or want to tour when he’s 60, even though they just announced a huge tour in the U.S., and he is 75 years old. Same with Queen touring today with Adam Lambert, Brian May is 71 and Roger Taylor is 69. The Rolling Stones and Queen just keep going, they love performing, and they aren’t going to stop until they physically cannot anymore. It’s just hilarious to hear how wrong he was😂 He didn’t know what the future was going to hold at that time, but I still find it ironic😂

Shows how prescient he wasn't! Not only are Mick & the Stones still alive & kicking it, look at Queen! Brian & Roger are still going strong. Of course they've cut back some, but they've still got it. Freddie did an interview that addressed this. He said he wouldn't be running around as much when older, but music would always be part of his life, writing, producing & singing. I think he'd have continued with the operatic work & possibly theatrical and/or movies. It's a damn shame he didnt get to be a sexy silver fox still entertaining us with his magnificent voice. He' d be Sir Freddie Mercury & he'd love it!!

Stop defending Prenter. Regardless of media form, selling out Freddie (literally) the way he did was inexcusable. I realize there is obviously more to him than being a two-dimensional "bad guy", as there is with every human being, but that doesn't suddenly inoculate him. There's a reason he was the scourge of Queen fans long before the movie was ever a real possibility.

his representation in BoRhap was perfect, just watch this interview. The actor playing him nailed his mannerisms and personality. The person who uploaded this may have tried to defend him, but there's a reason Queen fans hated Prenter long before the movie was even a possibility. Paul Prenter was right. Jagger would look silly, and he cannot give the show he used to. He was just wrong about Jagger wanting to do it, and the fans still come out. But had Freddie lived? No I don’t think he would be touring with Queen. He played a young man’s game. He was already feelin’ a need for change. By 1987 he was doing rock opera, he had dreams of doing he music for a play and in fact I think he did in 1986-David Clark’s ‘Time.’ So Freddie was already branching out.

For the people writing retarded comments purely based on the movie (just to be clear I'm not defending Paul here). He got fired for giving a party and leaving a huge mess. Not for withholding info about the Live Aid concert like they showed in the movie. And the interview where he talks about Freddie's escapades happened in 1987, not directly after he got fired. Don't base your opinions purely on the movie. It makes you look stupid, especially if you base it on the fictionalized parts of the movie.

Maybe not at 60 but how about at 70 plus. You did not know Mike Jagger and apparently you did not know the heart of a performer. Most performers will perform as long as they are physically capable in one way or another. Les Paul performed into his 90's. So did George Burns. Performers will be performers until they can no longer be performers. It's just how they are.
