Queen Elizabeth visits the Anzac Memorial - 5 February 1954

On Friday 5 February 1954, an estimated 100,000 people assembled near the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The royal couple had arrived in Sydney two days before to commence an eight-week tour of Australia. The 1954 visit was the first time a reigning monarch had visited Australia and the young couple were greeted by an adoring public wherever they went. Amongst the teeming crowds in Hyde Park that day were countless veterans from the Boer War, ex-servicemen and women from both world wars and the more recent Korean War. From the steps of the Memorial, the Duke made his first speech since his arrival in which he praised the dutiful service and deep sacrifice of so many Australians.
