I like hearing Brian’s voice pop up occasionally on their albums. It just adds to the variety that is Queen. If you don’t like something wait a minute and they’ll give you something different.

To me, 39 is a science fiction folk song, more in the tradition of Peter, Paul and Mary and/or Simon and Garfunkel who were huge in the 1960's. It's also cool that it's a song about space travel written by someone who would become an astrophysicist. Brian did say the Beatles were their Bible.

For the first 20 years that I was listening to this song (from around 1978 to 1998) I didn't even know what it was about. I loved it before finding out and I loved it even more afterwards.

I love the lyric that describes the moment of when the spacecraft and occupants move from the boundary of our atmosphere into Space. As the night follows day...

Skiffle is a type of *folk* music, not country per se. I far prefer Brian’s vocals for ‘39 to be honest, much as I love Freddie - Brian’s timbre is more suited to the skiffle genre itself as well as more suited to the storytelling in the lyrics. (Sometimes Freddie’s voice was simply “too epic” for a particular song, in my opinion - like asking Luciano Pavarotti to sing “Baby Shark” lol)

One of my favorite Queen songs by Brian May! It was interesting to hear that John Deacon had just started with an upright. Pretty good intonation for just a couple of days practice. Damn!

That’s John for ya ! He’s quiet, but he’s not backing down from a challenge, especially if thrown out there as a joke. I bet John got there extra-early and chose *exactly* where to stand for effect, just to see Brian’s expression when he walked in. Then John would crack up laughing because he had a really silly sense of humor. But then he would play the double-bass line perfectly because he’s just that damn good a musician.

If you tell people who aren't Queen fans, but know The Hits, that Queen did a folk song about the time dilation effects of faster-than-light interstellar space travel, they dont believe you. Then you sit them down, strap a decent set of headphones on them, and play this album. Instant Queen fan, in my experience.

It's reasonably called both, in that the verses are very similarly structure to those of, for example, Dolly Parton. It's in the tradition of narrative songwriting, which I think can be said to encompass both genres. A wonderful song and personal favourite.

On stage in the 70s it was done with the 4 of them lined up at the stage apron, Brian seated with his 12-string acoustic, Roger standing with a kick-bass and tambourine. I loved the simplicity of it, although I wished Brian had sang it. This year, it was just him, and a backdrop of a million blue stars, backing bass and vocals flying from there. Far less, yet more, simple.

Most 70's bands had one or two good singers, but few could boast three singers who could all have fronted their own groups. In some ways Queen were an update on the Beach Boys.

Love this song all on its own... didn't understand it for a hundred years, but totally get it now. Especially after watching _Interstellar_ . The "'39 and Interstellar" video exquisitely juxtaposes the song and film (with spoilers). I watch the video at least once a day. That Brian May (an astrophysicist in heart and mind) was decades ahead of Christopher Nolan with the same theme begs the question: Were Nolan and his brother influenced by '39? Back to "I'm in Love With My Car" for a second. I _hated_ it until I saw Roger do it live in 1978 and now can watch him sing and drum it in the _Live in Montreal 1981_ videos. The album doesn't remotely do it justice. It is one of the naughtiest songs Roger sings (and he sings plenty of them!), but you have to listen to the double entendre that peppers his speech patterns... singing or speaking. He is filthy hilarious!
