Quantum Computing in Healthcare - With Dr. Frederik Flöther from IBM

I’ve had the chance to talk with Dr. Frederik Flöther, an IBM Quantum Industry Consultant and Computational Scientist for the healthcare and life sciences industries.
The video we’ve created from our discussion is part of our sponsored cooperation with IBM.
Frederik has over 10 years of experience in quantum computing and A.I. I picked his brain on the most exciting areas in life science where quantum computing could contribute the most. I asked him about the obstacles that A.I. and quantum computing face in healthcare and on finding balance between sharing our data so we can build A.I.-based technologies while also keeping our privacy intact.
This video episode is jam-packed with knowledge and insights from a brilliant scientist. Do check it out if you’re interested in quantum computing’s role in healthcare.

👨🏻‍🏫 Hello, Umer. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. There is one error in your sentence. Replace ‘gain’ with ‘expand’ or ‘broaden’ then it will be correct. Well done 👏.

It would be great if we could compute all the human metabolism.

Lol that is complicated because each human is different, I hope instead of a treatment for the masses we are capable of making a cure for each individual’s body

Thank you for this evocative story, Dr. Mesko! Dr. Flother points to the world of greatly expanded health care opportunities that quantum computing may bring about - but I'd like to hear him answer your question about how does computing with qubits get us to this world in a way that computing with bits doesn't? What is it about accessing the 2 additional states that enables this to happen? Will we be able to compute the metabolome in relation to the other 'omes? For example, the impact of the multiple genes and their variants on metabolic pathways (e.g. single-carbon metabolism, the urea cycle, etc)?

Maybe I'm just stupid, but I'm not seeing what exactly quantum computing does. The only examples given that are specific enough to critique are things like, taking data about someone's health status and telling them what to eat or what exercises to do - I'm not seeing how quantum does this better than regular AI/ML on a normal computer. Another example is an IBM study where ML predicted Kidney diseases - still nothing specific about why quantum and not regular computing? There's some vague bits about being able to better see relationships than traditional computing, but nothing really specific. What am I missing? Tbf, i understand that there's a tension between being general enough for a wide audience and still being substantive

why ask someone to do something as impossible as explaining quantum computers in 3 sentences and then make a video about it which drags for sooooo long?
