Guru Rinpoche, the Buddha of Vajrayana
The Vajrayana Wheel of Buddhist Dharma that Guru Rinpoche brought to Tibet was more than simply another lineage of Buddhist philosophy. Vajrayana teachings, and especially Guru Rinpoche’s teachings and manifestations, framed a view of reality, of the Universe, more akin to Quantum Physics than religion.
Guru Rinpoche, the Lotus-Born, is honored as the second living Buddha of our age, who turned the final wheel of Dharma, Vajrayana, and brought Buddha Dharma to Tibet. He also embraced the miraculous and wonderous.
The Lotus Born
Historically, Guru Rinpoche turned the final wheel of Dharma, popularizing the powerful methods of Buddhist Tantra. Traditionally, he is “Lotus Born” in Oddiyana. In the traditional, miraculous accounts he “consciously incarnated as an eight-year-old child appearing in a lotus blossom floating in Lake Dhanakosha, in the kingdom of Oddiyana.” He is the Lotus Born - born fully Enlightened.
“Scholars agree that Padmasambhava was a real person, that he came from Uddiyana, a kingdom possibly located around present-day Swat in Pakistan, and that he arrived in Tibet some time around the year 760.”
Miraculous and Scientific?
Is it confusing to label Padmasambhava as both the Quantum philosopher and the mystical, magical wizard of Enlightenment and simultaneously as a fully Enlightened Buddha?
Although on one hand he is lauded as the miraculous Lotus Born, he is also embraced by
many scientists for his sound Quantum vision. Are they contradictory?
Padmasambhava’s life was a living embodiment of the miraculous. Nothing is impossible to the fully Enlightened and marvelous Guru Rinpoche - and everything about his amazing life is a wonder. Just as Shakyamuni Buddha, the first Buddha of our age, demonstrated extraordinary phenomena, Padmasambhava personified them. Why does an Enlightened Buddha display magical feats? As “Upaya” or skillful means, or upaya-kaushalya meaning “skill in means.” In simplest terms, upaya is any activity that helps others realize enlightenment.
At the same time as he demonstrated the miraculous, especially helpful in presenting the Dharma to Tibet, Padmasambhava taught the science of the mind.
Guru Rinpoche's Science of the Mind
Tulku Pasang Rinpoche explains his popularity in modern times:
“Padmasambhava's teaching is the science of the mind.”
Professor of Quantum Physics Dana Zou, clarified Guru Rinpoche's science of the mind this way:
“Padmasambhava was in touch with Quantum reality, He lived the Quantum reality. He manifested the Quantum reality.”

I had a dream about padmasambhava before I knew who he was. When I woke up I had to Google mustached Buddha, rainbow bellied Buddha to find out who he was. In the dream I was him at first, I was the Buddha looking at a table of offerings, an altar offering table somewhere in San Francisco, where people placed flowers and created an altar. and I knew(as him) that the people that left the offering were very blessed to make such an offering. And I as the Buddha was very joyful, from The beauty of the flowers and the gratefulness I felt from the room of offerings . Then suddenly I was outside of him, seeing him with big eyes and a crazy big smile in purple robes with a mustache and rainbows coming out from his stomach. He pointed to a framed image of a baby on the table to the left of his framed image. He said ‘Amitabha’. Which I understood as him saying-pray to him not me. Then together we went in to an inner room where I saw a window opening out to outer space, with a lightning field in the darkness of space. I wanted to go fly there. I thought, if I can be a Buddha I can do anything! I want to know about that light, the source beginning of light itself! And I laughed with the pure joy of a child and I pressed my hand into a fist and flew out the window like Superman towards the lightning. I can’t remember anything after that. I woke and I learned after researching that there was a mustache wearing Buddha who taught about the rainbow body and making the fist is his mudra a teaching called The lightning path. And I learned Amitabha is the Buddha of infinite light. This dream came the night that I made very deep promises before bed, inspired by Nelson Mandela and his deep compassion, I promised to be compassionate and at least stop eating meat. I’ve deduced that I made a promise that opened me to this Buddha plane. Still I pay more attention to him then Amitabha , because he’s so inspiring and active but I’m learning from this dream and hope to understand more .

Thank you, Buddha Weekly, for this introduction to the life and legacy of the Lotus-Born One. In my humble opinion, no biography of his life is complete without a discussion of his primary consort, Yeshe Tsogyal, a master in her own right. Their Tantric union & partnership resulted in many blessings for generations to come.

Yes different people attain Samadhi through various means and various focuses. Buddhist mantras are a virtuous focus, like the breath or any other focus. Everyone, however is DIFFERENT, and the means by which we attain the little realizations can vary, depending on our minds. Samadhi is a state of profound and utterly absorptive contemplation that is undisturbed by desire, anger, or any other ego-generated thought or emotion. It is a state of joyful calm, or even of rapture and beatitude, in which one maintains one's full mental alertness and acuity. So, we can attain these things for short times through many forms of meditation. For people with busy, busy minds, who don't work well for instance with mindful focus o nthe breath, mantra can be useful. (This is my opinion, always refer to your teacher.)

Hi Sir,first ,sorry for my broken english,my question is, According to Vajrayana Buddhism Guru Padmasambhava realized the rainbow body, which is full enlightenment without birth and death, through dzogchen, the highest teaching of the Buddha. Accordingly, Padmasambhava promised that if a devotee speaks to Padmasambhava through 7 line prayer or any other kind of prayer, he will come to visit and bless them. It has happened, that means Guru is still living for us in the rainbow body, isn't Guru still alive, isn't he,sir tell us your opinion.❤️🌼

Guru Rinpoche is a fully Enlightened Buddha. He manifested in our world, miraculously on a Lotus. Later, he manifested the Great Transference Rainbow Body, which involves dissolving the physical body into a body of light while still alive in his manifestation. But, generally, we don't have a notion of life and death with Buddhas, other than (only for our benefit) as manifestations (and Nirmanakayas) which are for our benefit. (Guru Rinpoche has many, many manifestations, including the well known eight). Of course the revealing of his treasures (Termas) is his ongoing activity in our world as well. In this way, Buddhas can manifest the activities of the Bodhisattva, but can simultaneously manifest as Sambhogakaya Buddhas in their Purelands (his is translated as: Pure Land of the Copper Colored Mountain) and also ultimately as Dharmakaya Buddha. Padmasambhava’s manifested historical life was a living embodiment of the miraculous. This is from one of his answers to Lady Tsogyal: “O, Lady of Faith, what you say is absolutely true. In such future times, that practice will definitely be of short and long term benefit for sentient beings. Although I have concealed many earth treasures, water treasures, rock treasures, sky treasures and so on which contain unfathomable pith instructions and methods of practice, in the degenerate times it will be terribly difficult for fortunate beings to find the conditions and circumstances to meet with the teachings; this is a sign that beings’ merit is running out. “However, in such times as those, this essential Vajra Guru mantra-if recited with vast bodhicitta aspiration in great sacred places, in monasteries, on the peaks of high mountains and the shores of vast rivers, in places inhabited by gods, demons and evil spirits, at the heads of valleys, geophysical junctions and so on-by ngakpas with unbroken samaya, vow-holding monastics, faithful men, women of fine qualities, and the like, however many times-one hundred, one thousand, ten thousand, one hundred thousand, ten million, one hundred million, etc.-will bring inconceivable benefits and powers. Countries everywhere will be protected from all plague, famine, warfare, armed violence, poor harvests, bad omens and evil spells. Rain will fall on time, harvests and livestock will be excellent, and lands will prosper. In this life, future lives, and on the pathways of the bardo, fortunate practitioners will meet me again and again-at best in actuality, or else in visions, and at the very least in dreams. Having gradually perfected the levels and paths, there is no doubt that they will join the ranks of male and female Awareness Holders in Ngayab Ling. “Even one hundred recitations per day without interruption will make you attractive to others, and food, wealth and enjoyments will appear effortlessly. If you recite the mantra one thousand, ten thousand, or more times per day, you will bring others under your influence with your brilliance, and blessings and powers will be continuously and unobstructedly obtained. If you perform one hundred thousand, ten million or more recitations, the three worlds will come under your power, the three levels of existence will fall under your glorious sway, gods and spirits will be at your bidding, the four modes of enlightened activity will be accomplished without hindrance, and you will be able to bring immeasurable benefit to all sentient beings in whatever ways are needed. If you can do thirty million, seventy million or more recitations, you will never be separate from the Buddhas of the three times nor ever apart from me; thus, the eight classes of gods and spirits will obey your orders, praise your words, and accomplish whatever tasks you entrust to them. “At best, practitioners will attain the rainbow body; failing that, at the time of death, mother and child luminosities will meet; and at the very least, they will see me in the bardo and all their perceptions having been liberated into their essential nature, they will be reborn in Ngayab Ling and accomplish immeasurable benefit for sentient beings.” (From: buddhaweekly.com/vajra-guru-mantra/) Hope this helps. In kindness, BW

Sorry to say, but if you read Guru Rinpoches biographies or his life stories, despite he had a miracilous birth, he was not enlightend form his birth on (2:29). His live story shows that he made progress in his spiritual development toward enlightment.

Thank you for your comment. There are multilple biographies and haliographies and paralell stories. The best way of explaining it why there is truth in all of them, and it doesn't make any of them incorrect, is in the words of Nyingma scholar Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche: "There are many stories explaining how Guru Padmasambhava was born. Some say that he instantly appeared on the peak of Meteorite Mountain, in Sri Lanka. Others teach that he came through his mother's womb, but most accounts refer to a miraculous birth, explaining that he spontaneously appeared in the center of a lotus. These stories are not contradictory because highly realized beings abide in the expanse of great equanimity with perfect understanding and can do anything. Everything is flexible, anything is possible. Enlightened beings can appear in any way they want or need to." (Source: The Eight Manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava. Translated by Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche. Padma Gochen Ling: Turtle Hill. Archived from the original on 4 December 2022. Retrieved 20 December 2022.) In kindness, BW.

Is PadmaSambhaba is the same as kasmiri saivism ?

With my limited knowledge of Kasmiri Saivism I'd say no. Padmasambhava was a Buddhist teacher. Although I believe (i'm not knowledgeable on Kasmiri Saivism) there are practices that are Tantric, Tantra is a method rather than a belief system or philosophy. Hinduism, Buddhism, Saivism and others incorporate Tantric method. I guess the broadest definition of Tantra is "any systematic broadly applicable "text, theory, system, method, instrument, technique or practice" - which could equally apply to any belief system. However Padmasambhava was an Enlightened teacher of Buddhist principles, including all-important Bodhichitta, Dependent-origination, and other concepts. There isn't really a theism doctrine or belief in Buddhism - deity means something different in Buddhism - so the idea of any creator-origination, theism or "external deity" isn't really part of the belief system, although there are overlaps in other ways, such as belief in Karma, and methods of Tantra (there are many methods: visualizations, activities, mantras, internal body yogas, etc.). But, I can only speak from the Buddhist point of view, I know so very little of Kasmiri Saivism. Hope that helps.

@@BuddhaWeekly one more question, Did budda himself gave any tantric ( occult ) teaching ? I don't know any streem of Buddhism follows ( except tibbat ) Occult practice s. And my best knowledge is tantra was given by as a way of understanding universal consusness siva . Also I thought Bhagban Budda refused God instead given some meditation techniques along with teachings to achive self. ( My knowledge is also limited in both side . Sorry for that 😸 )

@@oneBhairavOnline tantra is not essentially occult... It's a method employed to attain enlightenment more rapidly than renunciation..... And yes Buddhist believe in existence of powerful beings (what we called devas or in English God) but the difference is they don't believe these devas can grant them englightment as devas themselves are in samsara... Historical buddha gave these advance teachings to only few people who are ready... For us lay people he gave the way of renunciation as it will resonate more with lay people... Mahayana and vajrayana believes in multiple buddha that has existed in triple time.... And each buddha gives the same knowledge but method varies according to time circumstances and condition.... And also guru padmasambhava is believed to be an incarnation of buddha amitabha
